This is from BristolMTB's recent visit to the french alps during the Passporte de Soleil biking event in June 2014.
Jon Mckenny is racing down the trails wearing the camera showing the quality of the runs in Les Gets, this involves a blue run, a red run and a run down the black run of the Jump park.
If you haven't been to the Alps on your bike yet.. your missing out

I'm taking my 8 year old to Morzine / LG next week for our first ever mountain biking. Would tracks like these suitable? They looks pretty fast - or were you just going for it... ? thanks

First ever for both of you? if so I would take it steady! everything is rollable and there are chicken runs on 95% of trails with anything to big for you to roll. We have just come back (June 2016) and we saw lots of riders taking it steady, probably just above walking pace. Ride within your means and you will be fine, stay on the brakes!

Thanks! Yes, first time for me as well. I'm 47 and ride a cross bike but have never mountain biked on anything not flat. I know the area well in winter but it looks a bit daunting in summer on wheels. Really do want to take it easy - just want to bimble about with my boy off road but without too much peddling. I was thinking up the Pleney lift then one of the blues either left or right to start - what do you think? We also both only have very cheap Halfords bikes. Thanks for your advice.

We were staying in Morzine this year so we rode the area a lot as Les Gets had lots of closures due to Crankworx (and the rain), The blue trails down from the pleney side back into Morzine would probably be good fun for a newer rider, they are a bit 'fire roady' with some single track thrown in. No jumps or drops if i remember rightly. We rode the super Morzine side a lot and really liked it, again, slow and steady you will be ok, although there is some steeper stuff. The only way to get down from Super Morzine to the town however is Via a black (which was really hard to ride), the twisty road or jump back in the gondola.
We had a group of 8 riders this year with fairly high end bikes, you get shaken to bits (albeit going fast) and the bikes take an absolute battering, I would say half of us had major issues (1 ripped tyre, 1 snapped pivot bolt, 1 headset damaged, 1 bottom bracket) I think 6 or 7 of us took a tumble as well. You can rent bikes over there, all the ski shops change to MTB shops for the summer. I will be uploading the super Morzine videos this week hopefully.

That's brilliant thanks, really appreciate the advice. We'll probably only do 2 - 3 days max (actually 2-3 half days more like) or wife and other child will get annoyed! The Pleney tracks sound ideal, at least for starting, as our chalet is up near the Fys lift so we can ride down to the Pleney then ride back down to the chalet at the end. I think jumps and drops can wait a year or two!
Thanks again... look forward to your SM video.
