Some of my favorite Westerns that were overlooked and forgotten : A Man Called Horse 1970, Judge Roy Bean 1972, Spikes Gang 1974, Return of a Man Called Horse 1976, Train Robbers 1973, Man in the Wilderness 1971, Revengers 1972, Missouri Breaks 1976, Rooster Cogburn 1975, Cowboys 1972 and Jeremiah Johnson 1972.
These came late in Hawkes’s career and he struck out on each one. Henry Hathaway made better use of John Wayne’s aging with North to Alaska, Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit over the same decade. Hathaway’s films were superior to Hawkes’s Rio movies.
@@BarlowPalminteri I guess I will have to see SONS OF KATIE ELDER. I much prefer the newer version of TRUE GRIT, also NORTH TO ALASKA starts out well, but for me fizzled out into tedium. Of any Hathaway film I would say GARDEN OF EVIL would be my favorite. It has been a while since I saw EL DORADO, but for me afterwards, none of Weaynes film reaches that one, though it is probably because I like roberrt Mitchum. My favorite Wayne film is John Ford's MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALLANCE,
The Professionals starring Burt Lancaster. The Ballad Of Caleb Hogue - Jason Robards: The Great Silence - Klaus Kinski & Meeks Cutoff. Highly underrated & original westerns.
Amazing film....incredible production values & art direction. Was released in late 1969, so can't be included here..but agree that it is a much better film than the critics at the time said it was.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 It was bad, really bad. Nobody wants to see Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing, and what really makes it so bad is that all the gorgeous vistas and scenery is just trashed the instant they open their mouths and singing comes out, all that first rate cinematography and editing is ruined the moment that happens, they could have left the comedic overtones in it and it really would have been a good movie, but the instant that musical nonsense starts it just ruins it.
Someone else who appreciates Rio Lobo not as strong as the predecessors but still a good time, especially the opening sequence plus Jack Elam's performance
Absolutely, and him not mentioning Jack Elam is a horrible oversight, there's not many actors that could steal scenes off John Wayne and Elam does it repeatedly throughout the movie, just like he did it 11 years later in The Cannonball Run. And Sherry Lansing, WOW, she was an absolute knock out in that movie, Jennifer O'Neil was gorgeous but I'm sorry, when Lansing walked into a scene it's like all the air gets sucked out of the room.
I just watched Monte Walsh again. Great movie. One that should be on the list is "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" with Jason Robards, Stella Stevens and and wonderful supporting cast.
One very underrated western i would include is Doc, released in 1971 and directed by Frank Perry It tells a different story of the Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday/OK Corral gunfight. Its told from the pov of Doc Holliday, played by Stacy Keach, portrayed as a reluctant counterpart to Wyatt Earp, played by Harris Yulin, who is portrayed as a corrupt lawman hungry for political power.
Just caught that one on Tubi recently. The reason I sat through it was because one of these lists put it in Charles Bronson's Top 10. So some people liked it. Oh, by the way, it is rather good.
there were some interesting karate/cowboy western cross overs that were decent ,"Red Sun'' with Charles Bronson, and a few B rated karate cowboy movies
Concerning Rio Lobo (that could have been subtitled The Town of Beautiful Women) is a fine movie. However, the video says it with: "Directed by Howard Hawks who had previously directed Wayne in Rio Bravo and El Dorado." This movie is really the same tale 3X. I can see why it might be ignored.
McCabe & Mrs. Miller ? maybe not underrated ? Heaven's Gate is much maligned possibly deservedly so? but while it may not quite come together (which is a problem for a four hour film) I think there is a lot of wonderful stuff there. Great List BTW
Je suis un inconditionnel de James Coburn J'est aussi adoré "pendez-les haut et court" de Ted Post. De cette periode, on peut ajouter "little big man", "soldat bleu", "le solitaire de fort Humboldt" et "fureur apache".
Fin, people, FONT; It has an impact. Also, would using punctuation break your typing finger? The thumbnail is emblazoned with the words, "Great 705 Westerns Buried By Hollywood." I had to click on it to see WTF a 705 western is. Turns out it's 70's, but the font used has the S look same as a 5. Them, with no apostrophe, it reads 705. Well, I have to admit I did find out what a 705 western is, which satisfied my need to come here. 😀"They Call Me Trinity" is one of my all-time favorite movies, as is "Trinity is Still My Name".
Love DUCK YOU SUCKER. Great music and great performance by Rod Steiger. Another miss by the Academy. I respect PAT GARRET AND BILLY THE KID, but most certainly not my favoirte western by Pechinpah. For me his greatest western at least in the 70's, is the modern day western, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA. In the 60's, prefer RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY to WILD BUNCH
There a error. And God said to cain is showing clips from Le colt cantarono la morte e fu… tempo di massacro from Lucio Fulci, and Franco Nero ist not Klaus Kinski ;)
old Django one of the greatest western is classic with a famous cast once upon a time in the west also claasic wit also famous actors classic with paul newman an i think robert redford but the was so many western some nobody ever talking about because it is not famous like some western was but oke but most of all was the famous american an some forgoten actors that i seen in mostal italian movies like there was to see here with the other this legendary italian actor one my personal favoriet movie together with an american actor who playing also in westeren but oke the sory is about a man who meed one of the famous gun fighter but this man is nothing his gun is made of wood an he most clain the dirt of all but the gun fighter lean how he most learn to schoot an than nobody laughs wit him an don't use an wooden gun but know a real gun an all things changed know is just the this famous gun fighter
They Call Me Trinity was a cult classic in Australia, along with several Terrence Hill movies in the early 70s ... Rio Lobo is recycled rubbish. Too much spaghetti, not enough meat on this list.
Sergio Leone"s Duck You Sucker (aka) Fistful of Dynamite is not underrated, it's just not a good movie in fact it's very boring and it gets my vote as Leone"s worst film.
I watched Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Really. Kristofferson was too tall and too old for that part. Billy was 21 and small. And Coburn as Garrett? TOO OLD. Pat Garrett was 28 at that time. Coburn was in his 40s and on a downhill slide with arthritis. Rediculous casting.
"Two Mules for Sister Sarah" and "Ulzana's Raid" are both superb. "Bad Company" is a good Western that should be on this list.
Peter Fonda’s The Hired Hand, starring Fonda and the peerless Warren Oates, definitely deserved a mention here.
"My name is nobody" with Terence Hill and Henry Fonda is great and underrated
The drinking contest scene is a classic
One of the best!
I just ordered this on amazon. Thanks for the suggestion.
Ennio Morricone's soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission
I watch it every year.
Awesome video. You’ve given me a few films I need to check out.
The Hired Hand, with Peter Fonda, is also a good one. And, of course, my favorite western, Jeremiah Johnson, with Redford.
I've always thought of Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Rio Lobo as the "hey you in the jail trilogy".
The 2nd 2 were basically remakes, with some story changes.
You are not mistaken. Howard Hawks and John Waynew.
🤠 "hey you in the jail trilogy". I'm going to use that one. Thanks.

Joe Kidd is mysteriously so enthralling.
Joe Kidd is a forgotten gem!
I would add The Cowboys starring John Wayne. A powerful and entertaining film
Good list
The Professionals starring Burt Lancaster. The Ballad Of Caleb Hogue - Jason Robards: The Great Silence - Klaus Kinski & Meeks Cutoff. Highly underrated & original westerns.
First two are ‘60’s. But two of my favorites.
The Scalphunters with Burt Lancaster is a brilliant movie too.
Always thought "Paint Your Wagon" was underrated.
Paint your wagon was filmed in the sixties
@@KenMinor-ek1xs I always thought that was in 71, but yes, it was filmed in 69.

I always thought paint your wagon was funny !

Chato's Land - Michael Winner's precursor to Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson - nasty fun.
Someone else who appreciates Rio Lobo not as strong as the predecessors but still a good time, especially the opening sequence plus Jack Elam's performance

The "Wild Bunch" needs to be on this list.
That was good I'll have to look some of them up. Thanks. Valdez is Coming is pretty good revenge flick with Burt Lancaster.
You’re missing The Ballad of Cable Hogue by Peckinpah. It was buried due to him falling out with Warner Bros
It's a shame some of these aren't available on blu ray.
Hombre starring Paul Newman. That is a very underrated Western.
It's excellent, but made in the 60s.
@ Oh… In that case, how about “The Cowboys”. Many Western fans don’t like that movie but for me it’s one of John Wayne’s best.
Another Gem ( or gems) to add to this list is Culpepper Cattle Co. And also Valdez is Coming 👍👌
I just watched Monte Walsh again. Great movie. One that should be on the list is "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" with Jason Robards, Stella Stevens and and wonderful supporting cast.
"Blindman" starring Tony Anthony and Ringo Starr should be on the list. Awesome spaghetti western from the 70s.
The greatest western comedy, or spoof, was an irreverent TV movie in 1972 - Evil Roy Slade. It influenced the genre, and comedy, immensely.
One very underrated western i would include is Doc, released in 1971 and directed by Frank Perry

I can't believe you didn't mention The Culpepper Cattle Company, possible one of the greatest westerns ever made.
That’s why it was t mentioned

very good "Spaghetti Western", but it was released in 1968.
"Sons of Katie Elder" and "Hannie Caulder"
there were some interesting karate/cowboy western cross overs that were decent ,"Red Sun'' with Charles Bronson, and a few B rated karate cowboy movies
1971 "A Gunfight"starring Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash is a forgotten decent western.
Will Penny is another good one.
They missed the best Western of the '70s -- "From Noon til Three", starring Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland.
Two Mules etc just out on 4k UHD By Kino Lorber, they did not forget/bury it, they remastered it!!!!!!
Check Soldier blue (1970).
"Billy the kid and Pat..." and "Ulzana's Raid" are two magnificent films. The rest are between acceptable and.....

Yes the long riders
The Shooting with Jack Nicholson and Warren Oates could be on that list.
Ballad of Josue Wales
'The Master Gunfighter' (1975) is Tom Laughlin's underrated curio of western-cum-katana sword remake of Japanese samurai classic 'Goykin'
5:23 Antonio Margariti? Sounds fimilar 😉

Much more graphic than that I'm afraid. Let's just say he really rubbed them out.
Ulzana's Raid.....4 stars.......bad title hurt the movie
