Being from L.A. you never really realize how many landmarks are all around you. I pass this McDonald's all the time and I've never really thought it was that special despite being the oldest one lol.
We used to have a really cool retro McDonald’s next to us. Had to be one of the oldest in the company, the inside was the coolest thing ever. I don’t even care much for McDonald’s but i could appreciate how cool the architecture was. They ended up crushing it and building a new one in its place about a year ago. I was so sad :/

Ray Crok bought them out becuase they couldn't afford to go on when one of the brothers fell sick. They'd originally hired Ray to help them advertise their company, but Ray eventually went behind their backs and advertised it under his name and eventually everyone thought he'd founded it and had done a good deed when he bought it off of the brothers to pay for thier hospital bills. You see Ray had actually told the brothers if they didnt sign over the business he'd sue them. The brothers probably could've won but they had no money to fight back with as they were struggling with hospital bills, so they in the end chose life over death. Ray made a hand shake promise to pay the brother 5% or something like that of what he made to them. He never paid a dime. This is the foundation mcdonalds, it was built off of a greedy man who backstabbed the McDonalds brothers after they took him in and gave him a job when he was poor and needing work. For more information you can watch the McDonald brothers documentary on Netflix!

True story: This is McDonald's was owned by an original franchisee that pre-dated Ray Kroc. So he wasn't required to follow the McDonald's menu. As a result, that store sold other things like pizza. In the big earthquake in 1994, the place was damaged and closed for a while. It was supposed to be torn down but there was somewhat of an uproar. Anyway, the McDonald's corporation stepped in and bought the location from the franchisee, fixed it, restored it to its original appearance and added the little museum building with all the memorabilia in 1995. Good PR for the corporation and apparently it's been a profitable location ever since then. I don't think there's a huge number of people making a tourist trek there to see the location, but there are some, as evidenced by this video.

I had been to that McDonald’s before they put in the drive-thru and the video screen menu. The Fish Filet wasn’t even invented in 1953, as it came out in the mid to late 1960’s. The cash drawers were remotely mounted under counter below serving window, and each register controlled two drawers, A and B. However, I believe that location served some menu items from yesteryear. There is supposedly a modern McDonald’s not far from this location for those wanting a more updated experience.
