Hi from Trinidad and Tobago..thanks for sharing your journey...I was today years old when I knew kawandi...I was also today years old when I heard Africans lived in India...thanks for sharing..
Kwandi quilt making has become my secret obsession. They are each so unique and knowing they were started by my ancestors who were captured and enslaved it gives me a sense of joy to honor them.
Mam its kaudi.....in olden days every household had quilts in north Karnataka...Nowadays using kaudi has become old fashioned...Here and there we can see people stitching quilts... The one you are making is a simple quilt.
I just discovered Kawandi thanks to Margaret Fabrizio an artist extraordinaire in San Francisco when one of her videos from 11 years ago popped up in my feed. That was 4 days ago. I am hooked and loving it! I am so excited you got to go to the workshop, and in such a beautiful country. You exude the essence of Kawandi: gentle, thoughtful and slow (in the good way). I just subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to exploring your videos. Can't wait to see more of your creations. (my hands are sliding around on the laptop keyboard as I still have some fabric pieces from when I was stitching earlier). LOL. I was so impressed by the talents of the Siddi women whom Margaret went to visit (she was about 80 at the time) to learn the technique. Cheers from Minnesota, Fern
The interview of Margaret Fabrizio by Joe Cunningham popped into my news feed ~4 days ago. I was fascinated by her journey to India to learn this craft as I have been to Karnactica and I know how difficult it is to travel in India. Thank you for your video. I now have a new obsession. I live on the North Island. I wish that we had workshops like this in Whangārei. 😊
I have followed Margaret Fabrisio on TH-cam (atree3) for years. She has first hand historical video of the women doing this type of quilting. It is a must to see this. Kawandi has such a pure spirit which you will find as you watch. I enjoyed your video so much and look forward to more.
Очень интересное занятие,творческое,расслабляющее,умиротворяющее,приятное,!! Создание красоты своими руками!!Спасибо за идею!!Обязательно попробую так же!!Галина,Россия,Санкт Петербург..
Thank you Peal, I enjoyed your adventure very much. I think the same African ladies who started this type of quilting went to America ending up ar Gee's bend in the USA/ Also Japanese ladies do a similar thing called boro (I think). Cheers from Robyn from Australia.
So enjoyed your video. One of these days when I have a break in other projects I want to make something Kawandi….perhaps a shopping bag for the farmers market. What beautiful lush scenery…..except for that dang MacDonald’s. That junk will kill ya🤣
Thank you for your kind words. I’m thinking of turning mine into a bag too . Haven’t decided what kind yet. 😊 . Haha we didn’t go to Mac’s. :) I do like to get the fries sometimes though 😃
I’ve just found your video it is 11-45? Here in Ireland I Woukd love to do this type of sewing! Thankyou so much for sharing this calming but informative video x
I really like the composition of this video. Many decades ago I planned a trip to New Zealand but….as I needed to work while there and the job I had lined up required no special skills I was denied a visa so never made it! Well I now can see the scenery vicariously through you 😊
Aww your words are so encouraging. I also post day trip videos if you are interested. I’m sorry to know your job didn’t go through to Nz. I hope you get a chance to visit New Zealand sometime soon ❤️
Hi, You're quilt looks lovely. I am thinking about having a go at one of these lovely quilts. I just have a question about other options for the batting? Thanks for your help :)
I loved this little video.....PACKED with information and inviting to (as you say,) Zen! Thank you! [...and now I will have to look to see IF you moved forward, and made another project with the inspiration you gained! It would make a great video, pointing-out the differences + similarities of the "modern", as you learned in the class, and TRADITIONAL Kawandi . . . . .
I loved your video and your craft work. Thank you for sharing. I am wondering if there is information about the beautiful jacket that the instructor was wearing.
It's north part of Karnataka state's rural sewing from India , All our grandmother stitches these kind of kawandi , v use it during winter as well as summer.
Yes I have heard of that but unfortunately never had a chance to see in person . If you have pictures please share. Would love to see them. Thank you so much 😊
I just found this video and am interested to learn more. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Your dog is lovely and I now regard those little moments when our Springer spaniel demands my attention as little health breaks as my arthritis is very painful if I stay in the same position too long. Best wishes from Vera in Northern Ireland ❤
I'm enjoying this style of quilting also. I have a question that I haven't found the answer to after watching multiple videos is, do the stitches have to line up one above the other? Or is it just to keep the stitches consistent and the spacing of the rows consistent the idea?

Hi, You're quilt looks lovely. I am thinking about having a go at one of these lovely quilts. I just have a question about other options for the batting?

I am no expert and I have not tried alternatives ; but I think a thin flannel or even another layer or two of soft cotton would be a good alternative.

Thanks for your video. Do you fold under all sides if the scrap pieces or just the ones that are not going to be covered? 😊
Not all the ones , just the ones that go on top 😊 you are welcome 😊
It would have beneficial if more time was spent creating the quilt
It was a full day event so we had plenty of time to create the quilt . It was so fun
