In this lesson, we will discuss how to add and subtract polynomials in algebra by solving example problems.
First, we learn how to identify like terms and learn how to combine like terms in an algebraic expression that involves polynomials. Next we simplify the expression by adding the coefficients of like terms. Finally, we solve numerous examples to give plenty of practice.

As with the t you should put tails on the. X so as not to confuse it with the multiplication symbol.

I understand your commend and I do appreciate what you are saying. However, in algebra we never, ever, ever use the symbol "x" to mean multiplication. So there is really no confusion. We do however use the plus sign for addition and it is easy to mix that up with a variable "t". Good luck in your studies!

In a math forum, several say that it doesn't make a difference how you sort the terms; it's a personal preference. For example, when you look for the highest degree, they say you can look for the lowest degree or whatever. Can polynomial operations be performed when there is Not a highest to lowest degree as you say here? Do teachers not expect to see highest to lowest?

What you were saying is true, and you don’t technically have to sort it from the highest degree to the lowest degree, he just combine the like terms that’s all that matters. However, to make it more readable, and typically the convention is to sort it from highest to lowest, but you certainly don’t need to.

@@georgeseese no, all teachers will always recommend highest degree first. But you have to understand that that’s by convention. We’ll be right paragraphs. We always capitalize the first letter of every sentence but you really don’t need to. It’s just convention. We also put spaces between every paragraph and we indent the first line of every paragraph. None of those things are actually required, but we’re taught to do it to make things readable and easier to follow. It’s exactly the same thing with math. It’s not strictly required however, I always do it, and I always teach to do it that way as well because it makes everything more readable.
