@@himiko6795 what about hockey then we were a top team in the 80,s then it went down, took 30 years for it to come back, also why football world cup is a huge hit in India, it has never lost it's charm, the problem is that after the fluke 83 cricket world cup win an average Indian expects that to happen in all sports, and so they focused on cricket the sad part is cricket administrators, politicians and 83 squad players exploited this situation to the max and made tons of money, for example check NDTV website it had a whole section to advertise cricket and they have been doing this for ages, imagine the money spent by bcci to do this. Football has made a comeback because the grip of test match has been broken thanks to IPL, people have got used to getting their results in 4 hours besides IPL is boring because cricket is fun only when the bowlers dominate not the batters, if you have 2000 sixes scored in a tournament it's boring and no sense in shot making , no style just hit the ball like a dhobi washing clothes. Having said that you are also right the European footballers have influenced the younger generation and if our boys start playing well then there is already a huge support base ready for the Indian footballers, we must make sure we stay united and do everything to keep this flame alive.

Those were different times. Calcutta was still the largest city in India, football was still played in Eden gardens, and India was still among the big teams of Asia. Nowadays we have to be happy with a win over some random small Arab country. The lights have truly gone out.

When this match was played, India was definitely not among the big teams in Asia. That was during the 50s and early 60s, when we won Asian Games and had good performances in the Olympics. Also, in 1984, we were knocked out of Asian Cup in Group Stage itself.

I watched this match on TV, in black and white, then, when I was a kid. I hope only few will disagree that Indian football was once upon a time one of the best in Asia.
I will draw everyone's attention to the fact that this Argentine team had. everybody, except Diego Maradona. Just add Maradona in this squad and which makes the first XI of Argentina that went on to win the Mexico World Cup, two years later, in 1986.
Look how Bidesh Bose, Parminder Singh, Atanu Bhattacharya, Krisnendu Roy played. Were they looking inferior to Buruchagga, Pumpido and the rest of Argentina?
Actually they played far better. Buruchagga was marked very professionally by Aloke Mukherjee and Tarun Dey, a big lesson for any aspiring deep defender.
Coach matters. It was Ciric Milovan who shaped this team and infused this degree of tenacity.
And perhaps that's why we saw India playing attacking football, or should we call it total football like the Cruyff-led Dutch team played in the 1974 WC.
It should have been a clear 2-1 win for India. This repent will perhaps be forever. Nonetheless, as an Indian, and as a Kolkata person, will always feel proud of this particular match.

I thought, India never played the Worl Cup qualifiers in 82 and 86, but when I had a closer look, they indeed played (at least) the 86-qualifiers and failed relatively narrowly at Indonesia, who in turn reached the semi-finals against South Korea. Maybe this time it will be better. Afghanistan will definitely be defeated twice and then the final against Kuwait will take place - and India alreayd won in Kuwait. We`ll see!

This Argentine team was brought to India by their world cup winning coach Billardo to play in various conditions plus to get exposure to the eastern European teams like Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Hungary etc were invited. Except for Maradona and a couple of other players who did not come for this tournament. Parminder Singh used to play for JCT Phagwara. He missed a goal so close from the penalty box, he beat Neri Pumpido but hit the cross bar. This was a marquee tournament in India. this Argentinian team went on to win the world cup after this tournament. I was. I was 16 years then in 82, still have those memories etched in my mind.
This was 1984 as Bilardo has just taken over the national team. It was a 4 team round robin with Hungary but i dont recall the 4th side.

@@karthikks82 - This was Bilardo's first squad when he took over the National side. He used a base of Independiente, Estudiantes and Ferro Carril oeste players because he wanted to blood them into his system before he started adding Europe based players. Hence no Maradona, Passarella, etc.

My dad tells me that In 1954 to 1962 india was invincible in asia. They defeated Iran, Japan, korea, UAE and every kid in india used to play football then like cricket of today. And then India won 1983 cricket world cup by fluke and rest is history . We took up a game that no nation was interested in and became a champ in that.
It’s really a shame that a Great country like ours picked cricket and dominates it when no one else even takes it seriously, and left a world sport like football in the dust. Just shows our mindset as a country really, just weak.

One observation that time lots of bengali were inside football team.. nowadays less and can see most the good footballer from north east side .. India football rising again.. that time also saw India team was not bad but India team’s golden time was 1950 to 54 where the team was really strong.. main issue was the sponsorship infrastructure and more participation and lack of international match for that India did not do well on this wonderful game.. let’s see India will rise again hopefully in football as now we got money infrastructure and getting more professional approach .. hopefully will do better to qualify World Cup..

India had such a talented team, impressed with their gameplay.
i would still say this Indian team was physically superior compared to what we have today. I mean look at them. I can easily see players well over 6 feet, taking nothing away from current squad but we need physicality and stamina. you cant compete with current teams with just skill, you will have to match physically and stamina wise. There was this same rhetoric when we last played AFC cup in 2015 and people saw the difference. Cant imagine our team going head on with current argentines, germans or french. We would have a few broken ribs , bodies flying a few feet in the air. I love my India football team but i can see the difference clearly . All in all what an Indian team this was. Just mesmerizing with their speed, quality of passes and i am sure none of the team members would have gone to public and said please come and watch our match coz people believed in this team . Cricket ne bhi bura haal karke rakha hai...wo bhi ek fact hai.

These maximum are all 35 +, India didn't even had national league back then. Physicality height is not a big deal, power & speed with skills is the key factors in football. Look at Japan top team of Asia only with speed & skills, west Asian teams with size & height is no where close to Japan. 🤷♂️

Nope, technical abilities, usage of space, patience everything were lacking. India just knew how to push the ball forward....that's not football. We weren't good even then.

Any level of sports in the state today, is taken as a propaganda activity for their political needs. If any club requires funds and approaches the govt for it, there's a natural expectation for the govt and the party for political affiliation. There's no love for sports or encouragement of any sorts, from the govt of WB. When football became recognised as a national level sport in this country, it was only the players of this state who represented the national and international arena. Today, sadly, you'll hardly find anybody from this state in football. Systematically TMC and the WB government destroyed its rich sports legacy of the state.

Ah the good times when India's football team actually played decent. Though argentina has a far better team, still amazed that India, managed to hold its ground against such a powerful team. Our performance in football has gone down the gutters in todays's time, when we are just happy to atleast qualify for the world cup.
Had India maintained the same momentum the growth of the Indian football team would have been on par with other footballing nations 👍
