I once had to do pregnancy research, and oddly enough the smell of dirt (earth and rocks) was one of the top five cravings back then.
I thought his wife was being funny and was seeing how far they would go :)
I'm not sure, but it might be the salt pregnant women are craving? I've got horses that lick rocks if we don't give them salt blocks, so maybe pregnant women are just craving the salt on the rock?

Story of my life
I’m pregnant and I don’t really have any (more like the opposite) so I asked my mom and she said.... raw ground beef.... 😳 how am I alive?! 😂
My mom wanted a burger so bad she went to McDonald’s and yelled at the guy because it wasn’t ready fast enough 🤣

The sand, rocks, and dirt cravings are usually a symptom of a mineral deficiency.

Saying that's "usually" the cause isn't really accurate. Eating things that aren't food and have little or no nutritional value is called pica. Although various deficiencies are one of the possible causes for pica there are a number of other causes. Sometimes it's a result of certain diseases. Other times it can be a result of mental disorders such as schizophrenia and OCD. It can also be linked to intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities. I had a close friend for many years who had pica starting from a pretty young age that never went away. He had all kinds of tests done on him for years to find out what the cause was because it was the most extreme case his doctors had ever dealt with and he was hospitalized because of it many many many times. On top of eating some of the more common things such as rocks and dirt and paper he ate much more concerning things such as batteries, auto fuses, tiny lightbulbs, bits of foil, coins, rubber coated wire and various types of plastic. After they tested him for everything under the sun and found nothing they decided that it was most likely the result of a brain injury combined with his OCD.

One day, its 4am. Im hungry. No chicken. No cheesecake. But we did have marshmellow fluff and cheez itz. So i ate an entire small fluff container and a box of cheez itz while i rewatched Bones.
id just eat those things anyway but im getting tired of bones ive watched it at least 4 times start to finish

When I was pregnant with my 1st child I wanted fried chicken and pickles & for my 2nd child and wanted chili cheese fries and for both I wanted ice cream all the time 🤰

My first pregnancy i craved banana peppers by the jar full i would go to subway bc they toasted the sub roll and the meat since ir supposed to warm up the lunch meat and i would have them put a handful of pickles and two handfuls of banana peppers
With my oldest daughter I woke up in the middle of the night and wanted coffee icecream with hot fudge and brownies. (It was my favorite icecream from Cold Stone) I asked my husband to go to the store and get me the stuff and he told me to get it myself because he had to go to work in a few hours. After that I never told him about any other cravings I had with either one of our daughters. Now that he looks back at how he acted he feels really bad. Especially when he found out that I did have other cravings. I get him back every time he gets sick. If he asks me for something that we don't have I tell him to go get it himself lol.

Yup. Diatomacious earth i think its called. They crave it because of the need for extra calcium, iron and phosphorus (because duh, growing bones is crazy) so the brain comes up with crazy idea that contain these things
Wow, I never heard of this as a craving before. It's crazy how the brain works. Not to mention, there is a company that makes this is even healthy dirt.

Partly right. It sometimes occurs in pregnant women but pica itself doesn't have to do with being pregnant. Anybody over the age of 2 can be diagnosed with pica. In pregnant women it's most often due to a deficiency but among people who aren't pregnant there are a number of other causes. Various diseases can cause it. It can also be a result of intellectual or developmental disabilities and certain mental disorders. I had a good friend who had pica that started when he was a kid and never went away. It was pretty extreme and apart from the more normal things like rocks and stuff he would eat things like batteries, tiny lightbulbs, auto fuses, bits of foil, coins etc. The list was extensive. He was hospitalized dozens of times for it. He was tested for anything and everything that they could think of with no results so eventually it was determined that it was most likely caused by a brain injury combined with his OCD.
@Music Lover 101 "Edible soil"?? lol I don't know where you got that idea from. Any soil is technically ingestible but soil is soil. There is no such thing as special soil that is "edible". There are some products marketed as "edible soil" that are actually a children's desert. It's usually made of crushed cookies and doesn't ever contain any actual soil. The practice of eating soil, clay and chalk is called Geophasia. There are actually places an cultures in which this behavior is considered pretty normal. Geophasia is also found in some animals, in which it is sometimes normal behavior and sometimes not.

I'm currently pregnant for the 1st time and my weirdest craving is oatmeal creme pie with mashed potatoes on top.
With each of my pregnancies all I wanted was cashew nuts and green grapes, So much that long after I was done having children my family looks at me questioningly if I eat green grapes.

When I was pregnant with my first I made my husband make me a sandwich.. it had marshmallow fluff, Reese chocolate spread, peanut butter and pickles. Toasted of course!
my coworker wanted spicy food CONSTANTLY she said it was worth the wicked heart burn she would get after. My aunt wanted margaritas so she had lime popsicles. I heard one of my other coworkers say she wanted orange juice concentrate- frozen
when I was pregnant with my oldest all I wanted was pizza with everything and pineapples, when I was with the second one I wanted nothing more than chicken livers and fried fish, with my third and final child I wanted the typical stuff like pickles and ice cream along with peanut butter, jelly and bologna sandwiches. thing is no one told me I would still love that stuff 27 years later that is how old my oldest is.

The woman was not ill. Thankfully but yeah it’s a real thing people crave. So when someone says I craved weird stuff. Then yeah you never know they might be craving some dirt!!!

I craved kielbasa sausage sliced and fried. Then add butter and saute cabbage till soft. Add a little garlic and a tiny bit of brown sugar 😍
My sister ate like nothing but cured meats, fancy cheese, and penutbutter on like celery or something after my neice was born and she started breastfeeding. She ate like bothing else for the first week or two
I was only able to breastfeed my daughter for two months, I couldn't produce enough milk for her while and after I caught a cold. Luckily she didn't get sick and is a health one year old. Her birthday was last month, she is a big ball of energy and a social butterfly like her daddy.
The cravings and hunger while breastfeeding was a real challenge, I made sure to keep snacks on had just for me within reach or away from my husbands snacks.

My 1st kid - milky-ways... Bags of the snack sizes! Soo yummy I became 30% nougat 70% carmel
2nd kid - cucumber, mayo, cheese, and sprout sandwiches with nature's seasoning.. I lived off them
3rd - sauerkraut with everything.
4th kid - pickles, cucumbers, relish, cottage cheese, shredded cheese and ranch mix it up in a bowl.... Yummmm

I've had many cravings. But I guess the weirdest craving I've had through my pregnancy was sliced cucumber, with drops of sriracha, sprinkled with kosher salt, and soaked in lime juice. Absolutely delicious.🤤

All I craved the first part of pregnancy was anything spicy. I had extreme morning sickness and the only thing I. Could keep down was food soaked in hot sauce. The middle to end all I wanted was pancakes and fried eggs!

Also I googled why pregnant women would crave rocks and it’s really interesting. It’s called Pica. It actually occurs in children too.
As a toddler my sisters tell me that I would eat the crushed wall in window corners.

MyonlySecret actually the biggest reason lots of people crave rocks and sand is because their body needs more minerals. Pica is actually a disorder that causes some people to want to eat inedible things not always just rocks. Sometimes lint or memory foam it's usually a texture thing that causes the impulse.
Apparently, I ate dirt as a kid... No idea why... But AUSTIN, it didn't make me drop out of school, ya turd! Lol. I was just weird. Btw, my mom would eat an entire box of ice cream sandwiches every night when she was pregnant with me. So food for thought (no pun intended), ice cream sandwiches = dirt eating kid.

Drinking Instant gravy and pickled onions.
And bacon with nearly everything.

Try chocolate ice cream with BBQ chips... specifically Snyder's. The salt + ice cream is AMAZING. Used to tease my husband for the combo until I tried it.

Snyder's makes pretzels, but they also make other flavored chips. The BBQ oddly soaks up the chocolate ice cream and it's yummy.... and now I want pretzels..

Christie Kumar funny enough, with my son it was pizza and spaghetti I craved 24/7. With my first daughters it was orange juice.
My pregnancy craving was Progresso Lentil Soup, garnished with fresh lemon juice. Couldn't get enough! I didn't really crave sweets or odd foods, just lemony lentil soup.
Giant puff Marshmallow with dill spear shoved through the center and rolled in smooth Jiffy peanut butter. Its AMAZING ! I'm currently pregnant and love it!

Daughter's craving was cheese slices covered in lots of yellow mustard, son's was pickles and (specifically) McDonald's caramel frappuccino with whipped cream and extra both caramel and chocolate sauce on top
