Bit of art, bit of history and science, bit of mystery and personality, and completely enjoyable to watch.

This will be my third episode. The first i watched was two paintings of people of color and it was a joy filled episode. The second was of two experts, the original who knew the artist and agreed that a painting was by him, but she had passed, and the new expert who wouldn’t bend, and was two cowardly to appear on the show, despite all the scientific proof they presented. You could tell that while I’m sure the owner did care about the painting’s value, she cared most about the painting itself. It left me very sad that this second ‘expert’ wouldn’t even listen to science (like many idiots today). I feel like the owner should sue the ‘expert’ and let them both present evidence in court! I’m hoping this episode has a happier ending, like the first.
I never heard of the artist but I loved and thoroughly enjoyed the research of this the artist and his works. Now I know more about Lowry than my husband. It is a brilliant documentary.
Brilliant to bring in the forger! He has a point of view no one else can match.
I was wondering just how long it took him to do that painting and whether Fiona stood there chatting with him the whole time.
It was, and this show really is one of the more exciting journeys.

This is such a journey of teamwork with a cohesive focus on attaining the truth and in this joint desire their energies are rewarded with delicious facts that include science, Physics, chemistry, and the Behavioral Science sneaks into the experience.
Human Nature and choices, the little side rooms of our personal experiences when we make choices that are unique, not in keeping with habit or routine, and which normally remain unknown.
Not necessarily any sort of malicious intent, rather an exploding, and with specific relationship to the 5 colors of Windsor and Newton, the Artist remained loyal, he merely was exploring "Elements" offered of the White Paint range.
It was a particularly enjoyable watch, given that "from my areas of interests and focus, I understand a bit more of the Human Nature, Human Behaviors, and can easily say this Artist really didn't mislead anyone with his statement, he merely either opted to explore the WN Whites for his own Artistic desires, and/or didn't have the need to explain that it was more than WN White, actually adding a degree 9f expert knowledge to his works for the future investigations to validate his paintings as authentic.
I found this so interesting, as if the Artist was giving the search for Authenticity a value of delicious discoveries.
It was like clues to where the Treasure is to be found, ... and they did!

When I was in college, one of my friend's father had a large collection of Lowrys. I still remember being impressed by them but not wholy understanding the style as we were educated in anatomy and more realism. I still love them and today it's more my taste, but not my budget!
The audio in these episodes are absolutetly brilliant. Very well done to the person behind the audio recordings. I would love to hear what kind of microphones was used and where the lavalier microphones were mounted on the body of the hosts of this programme.

I used to paint with lead white in the 70s as a kid and people began to become very concerned with that pigment around then and many artists switched to something less toxic.

This was an especially enjoyable episode, perhaps because the genre is modern folk art. As far as the 5-color formula, this is a tribute to the artist's forsight and cleverness, because he came up with a way to fake the fakers by appearing to naively give away a secret to his techniique, At least some forger will have tried it, failed, and gone on to easier artists to copy.
I'm just a lorry/truck/semi driver. Never had an interest in art. But with this show I've learned so so much.
"What do you need to do to fake a Lowry?" I would have said, "You need to make it look like a Lowry." I guess that's why I'm not an art expert!😆😆

Seeing the Jensen Interceptor in the background of the photo of his parents says he also had good taste in motor cars!
As for the discrepancy in the use of zinc or titanium white paints, it's easily explained by the fact that those paints were used in the preparation of the board prior to the actual painting (there's a specific term for this which I can't recall), and as lead-based paints became restricted for household paints that would've driven up the manufacturing costs for artist's paints using lead-oxide.
Perhaps Lowry was also trying to reduce his exposure to lead?

Really, Fiona, Philipe and Bendor Grosvenor left again, No Stone unturned! And I discovered an Artist I never herd of nor did I like particularly his painting at first. but, after having watched L.S.Lowry talk and paint in his Studio, watched the Documentary..., they grew on me.
I feel very happy to be able to go from one Fake or Fortune the next... !

Lowry was using five colors. Whether it was lead, titanium or zinc white, it was white. Sometimes you buy what you can afford, or what is available.
It's great that the three paintings in question turned out to be the real McCoy, but I don't get the enthusiasm for Lowry; his works remind me of what you would get from the better students in a high school art class. I wouldn't have given five bucks for any of them, but for Lowry's sake I'm glad there were those willing to pay enough for them that he earned a good living.
As someone who loves and appreciates many types of art, I can see how it's difficult for many people to like art created by someone like Lowry: it's primitive, crude, naive...the technique isn't polished, it looks like something a 5 year old could do. The same could be said for a number of well-known artists: Horace Pippin, Grandma Moses, Bill Traylor, even living painters like Peter Doig. But what it comes down to is that it's not always technique that's necessarily important. It has more to do with feeling, charm...sometimes it's whimsy, sometimes it's some sort of darker truth that's revealed. And that's why today you see more of an acceptance of "outsider" art because in the eyes of many, the art is less sterile, less filtered. But I get it. I used to think the same way.
He painted for himself long before he was excepted and eventually after he'd been a rent collector made lots of money in his 60's

You had evidence from the film of one picture in Lowry's studio.
I have a hard time believing they just unexpectedly saw the one painting in that film. It may have been unexpected by the owner, but I think it was a setup.
Of course it was. It's a television program. Nothing unexpected can happen. It's all scripted and planned out. TV shows are expensive to make and can't go awry.
they already told us that he had to find evidence in non conventional way aka watching the documentary film

?Question ? Does discovering that Lowry used different whites mean that some paintings which may have been deemed fakes previously due to the use of other white pigments are now up for re-evaluation?

Unreal what you guys dig out. I don't think Sherlock Holmes would have found that film, the picture with the zinc white, or went on to find an auction with a neighbor lot number.
Who is the artist and painter of the woman in the orange dress and black hat painting in Ben’s studio when they discover the zinc white?
was this the first time anyone had ever seen that photograph of him? bc i cant believe him using titanium white was an unknown fact or something to be exposed, if he's photographed so clearly with it in his studio
as long as there has been art there have been forgeries so there is risk in any investment, buy art for love not for money then if its a fake you wont care, if it was about beauty to begin with,

There are more bent Lowry works than real ones.
Just enjoy the art for what it is....if not sure don't buy it, get a poster instead;)

Yet another repackaging of Fake or Fortune....very very anoying bearing in mind that the new programme on Perspective are often not available in some countries. An explanation would be appreciated....hopefully Waldemar's new series on Mannerisms will be available EVERYWHERE
Just thinking... Wouldn't it be interesting if paint manufacturers would put in special markers in their paints from time to time in order to defeat counterfeiters.
I agree their are loving dads that need their childrentoo. Im single and raised my son without his father support. All i asked was for him to be in his life. Has time went by my son gets no answer. Best believe i called and knocked on his door. I had to relocate and best believe i drove miles to get our son to him and still no answer. Iv been ill from some time now and best believe im trying but i cant do it anymore im so tired yall.
Are we here to be happy? If not, why are we here? Look to the stars, and a time when our Sun is no more; and we simply pick up our weapons and turn them to plowshares, but we are plowing the stars to find new gardens, new places for life to thrive. We cannot do this without our past habit of fighting with increasingly sophisticated weapons. Now that we have them, war is vestigial, but the fighting continutes out of habit. Let's learn to live without it, as it has served a noble purpose that will save all of "life everlasting, Amen". Now it just drains our resources and will leave us all penniless.

This is how Mr. Gerald got the paintings, one day Mr. Lowry missed the train again, by that time Mr. Gerald was about to go to the airfield want to try to fly the newly bought private plain. that time Mr. Lowry was walking back home when Mr. Gerald ask him where hes going, and offer for a free flight to his destination.. and in good faith Mr. Lawry give the 3 paintings. and thats how they started good friends, eventually Mr. Lowry is fairy god father of Mr. Stevens. 😉 (just an imagination) 😊
Really, none of you get this artist’s idea? Art isn’t about technical drawings! If that’s all required, you might as well take a photograph! It’s about what this says, the importance of architecture over humanity, everything in humanity seems small and grotesque. The more people there are in the world, the less important they become, the artist is reminding us that we’re all individuals no matter how much the concrete rises above us! I think he was cool and forward thinking!

I would think after everything that the copiest went through that you couldn't pay him enough to ever paint another artist's work again....I guess not.
It is difficult to relate to the travails of the "property developer" son of a "self made man" with regard to works of art acquired through cloudy means. The investigation is fine...a little stilted as usual due to Mr Mould's language...and the the tech is always amazing. The owner's words: "it's about his memory, really. He wasn't the type of person who would be duped." Say a lot. Option 3: original Lowry stuff bought on the dodge. Rich man gets an investigation/verification for free...as is the way of the wealthy.
Try a different episode.

When childlike, naïve Folk Art became sought after , that's where you lose me . The guy had NO TALENT as a painter. To find his lack of any skill, "Quaint" is insanity.
"What do you need to do to fake a Lowry?" Get a 10 year old to paint something. One of those emperors new clothes artists. Face it, they're terrible. Faked so much because just about anyone can paint that bad.

A crayon- like style of similar graphic oriented figures in crowds, taking bent poses, may be seen in the works of Keith Herring.
Look into Keith Herring’s work, you may just love how hopeful his figures are.

I can not understand some art! Each to his own but I would not Pay $10.00 for any of those pictures! I have an 8 years old Granddaughter that can draw better! I can draw better!
