Did promise there would be a video today so this is why the Edgbaston Extension is published on TH-cam. Thanks for watching please do stay safe during these extreme temperatures.
I was conducting on tram 34 when saw you get on at librsry heading towards new street on sun.afternoon and was nice to see talk to you while doing a video on the new extension and also worked the 1st tram to edgbaston village and featured on jen on the move you tube video
Goose Lord they actually did it! Indeed there are Five Ways to not only Five Ways Station but also to Five Ways' Five Guys lol! Damn Buses getting in the way!
Hello Simontrains excellent video and I have just became a channel member to show my support for your wonderful channel keep up the amazing videos kind regards Danny@Southline Southernline 👍🏻👀👋🏻🤩
Thanks Danny and really appreciate the support. I also give you a heads up that during your kind the comment when you posted I was just saving the video so when it airs this Sunday, your name won't be in the video but will make sure that it be in the next one.
I've passed through Birmingham two or three times in the past but have twice had to abandon a proper visit. Last time it was because the trams suddenly went out of action. It's s a relief to see this extension finally open. There are some interesting features, including the canal bridge and the grassed track at the terminus. It'll be nice when the Wolverhampton station link opens in August/September and I'll try and visit.
I heard that the Wolverhampton Station extension will be open after the Commonwealth games in Birmingham which starts next Thursday but when they announce the opening, I pop down to take a look.
Excellent video, Cyber - glad you made it down there for the opening day! It's interesting how different the West Midlands Metro CAF Urbos 3s are to the Edinburgh Trams (even down to things like having to press the button to open the door). I was going to nominate Gogarburn as a tram stop with grass between the platforms but, checking on Maps, that would be incorrect because there's a normal surface between the platforms and the grass doesn't start until you get beyond the platforms in either direction
You don't have to press the button, the doors automatically open but I do need to try the Edinburgh trams properly, I have been on them but only using them for one or two stops. Thanks barrowc
brilliant tram extention id love to go up to Birmingham in the future and see the trams and i def will look into doing that also im loving Five ways and as i eat in Five Guys burgers a lot that stop would be very handy for me to grab lunch in Five Guys but anyway awesome video keep up the awesome work
It's weird seeing trams running without overhead wires, so I'm guessing they've also got batteries. Incidentally I never knew these trams were built by CAF. They look a little bit like the AM and Class 195 units.
It a bit strange but between Grand Central (Birmingham New Street Station) and Brindleyplace it runs on batteries, Brindleyplace to Five ways it runs on the overhead wires and between Five Ways and Edgbaston Village it runs on batteries but once at Edgbaston Village it departs running on the wires out of the tram stop but quickly the pantograph drops when heading back to Five Ways. But these were built by CAF and also are the Edinburgh Trams as well.
The reason for running with out wires especially near Victoria Square is that the poles and wires were thought to spoil the view of the Historic Buildings in that area.
The West Midlands Mayor Andy Street is currently lobbying for funds to extend the line onto Bearwood, as part of the next phase of his West Midlands Metro Masterplan"! Would have done the first tram if I hadn't have been heading for Blackpool to ride a much older tramway!
Good to see the extension to Edgbaston village now completed. Plus in London the Barking Riverside extension is now completed and the new Barking Riverside station is now opened and up & running.
If it wasn't for the extreme heat there would had been a video riding the first train from Barking Riverside uploaded yesterday instead of the Edgbaston extension, sadly I had to change plans and not visit London which was the right call. But really enjoyed heading out on Sunday.
Looks a great addition to the network. Where do they drop their pantegraphs? It looks like there are wires over the terminus. Is that to recharge? Need to pay a visit

Yes I think that is the idea as it will be a continuation of the current Digbeth high street extension, but unfortunately it will probably take a few more years before we start to see it being built

The bus stop on the Hagley Road alongside the metro terminus is now called Edgbaston Metro. It used to be called Francis Road. Edgbaston is a big area without a centre and Edgbaston Village is a made up name invented a few years ago by the local land owner.
Great video. Must say the life and personality has been sucked out of Birmingham and has been ruined by the tram system. Andy street has a lot to answer for. Not only that HS2 has ruined natural habitats in Coleshill and Meriden.

Great vlog, will have to visit the extension next Saturday.
Thank you, hope you enjoy the journey
Good to see trams on the streets of Birmingham again and even better on a new extension
Thanks Rail Focus
Enjoyable video. Love the tram crossing the canal sequence
Really enjoyed recording that scene, had it planned after seeing it on Google maps Saturday night. , Thanks Dennis.
6:13 it's called vlogging, try it sometime Cyber 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Indeed lol

Thanks
Looks good Simon. Will have to try it out at somepoint.
Thanks Jacob
Nice vlog. Nice to the West Midlands metro extension open to Egbaston! I enjoyed watching. I do want to do the West Midlands metro at some point tbh.
Thanks Sam

But also to Merry Hill as well
In due course but the Wolverhampton station is the next extension
Jen editing in a Costa? Spying on the competition were you Cyber? hahahaha
Video was up before I edited :p

Would have done the first tram if I hadn't have been heading for Blackpool to ride a much older tramway!
Thanks Mark, been a while since I've rode on the Blackpool Tramway
Good to see my traffic and tram lights are still working well at Grand Central (New Street) Tram Stop 🤣👍🏻
No worries Warwick Road
Love you video

@@Sim0nTrains Ok no worries. :)
I tried to give this video Five Likes but the YT system wouldn’t let me! 😂
Another interesting and polished video, well done, sir! 👍
Thanks Martin'sMiscMix, it a shame they can't give me five likes lol but one is more than happy :D
Is this now the only hybrid tram service in the world?
A tram service that uses overhead and battery power?
Yes, not sure in the world but defiantly in the UK.
Looks a great addition to the network. Where do they drop their pantegraphs? It looks like there are wires over the terminus. Is that to recharge? Need to pay a visit
The Battery Section is between Centenary Square / Library and Grand Central
Between Grand Central and Brindleyplace it runs on batteries, Brindleyplace to Five ways it runs on the overhead wires and between Five Ways and Edgbaston Village it runs on batteries but once at Edgbaston Village it departs running on the wires out of the tram stop but quickly the pantograph drops when heading back to Five Ways.
Will there be a line to the airport and NEC ? I would of thought that would be an essential route for many
Yes I think that is the idea as it will be a continuation of the current Digbeth high street extension, but unfortunately it will probably take a few more years before we start to see it being built
Notice they lower the pantograph for next 4 stops and run on batteries.
What equipment do you use to film the vlog with
Canon Legira RF806... if that fails my phone
Thanks Simon
Your vlogs are great quality what software do you use in post if you don't mind me asking
Isn't there a direct line from central station to Edgbaston? Why did you take 2 trams?
The bus stop on the Hagley Road alongside the metro terminus is now called Edgbaston Metro. It used to be called Francis Road. Edgbaston is a big area without a centre and Edgbaston Village is a made up name invented a few years ago by the local land owner.
Thanks David, I also noticed that they have put on temporary bus stop next to Edgbaston Village tram stop
Great video
Thanks Luis
