if mirrorball was the slow, quiet, lonely end of a high school dance, then gold rush would be the peak of the party, where everyone's warm and upbeat and joyful and flushed
“I don’t like that falling feels like flying till the bone crush” damn that’s one of the most poignant lyrics she’s ever written if I’m being honest. It has so many meanings.
It's insanely relatable. I used to listen to this song so much in my last relationship, and now it's so very painful. But I think I'm healing bit by bit.
It took me a few listens to realize this song is kinda sad. She doesn’t like the gold rush - everyone flocking to this person that she loves. But everybody loves them. The song progresses into her daydream about having the greatest love with this person, but it fades into her “day old tea ‘cause it could never be.” This is a song about a daydreamish unrequited love that will never come to fruition. 😔
Many people have said that this song is about having a crush on someone who is out of your league. One person said that it is about someone who is in a relationship with a very popular person, who is perceived as "perfect" and whom "everybody wants." But I think differently. This song gives me very strong enemies-to-lovers trope vibes. There is a clear mood of resentment in these lines, especially the lines "Everybody wants you, everybody wonders what it would be like to love you." The narrator denies her feelings for this "perfect" person ("I don't like a gold rush") and usually keeps her head down low, preferring not to attract attention to herself. The person she is singing about, however, is popular and loved - people flock to them like it's a gold rush. This is a classic example of the enemies-to-lovers trope, in which the two people are sometimes exact opposites, constantly contradicting each other. This is also shown with the line "At dinner parties, I call you out on your contrarian shit" - "perfect" is probably very loud and talkative, and maybe has controversial opinions. They come across as charming and charismatic to most people, but the narrator sees through their facade and pokes holes in their statements. "I don't like anticipating my face in a red flush" - The narrator is hesitant to rush into falling in love. She has likely had previous experience with love, and she doesn't like letting her face flush red; this may also represent the general signs of a crush, such as wanting to be around the other person all the time and thinking about them a lot. The narrator is probably used to being a loner. "I don't like that falling feels like flying till the bone crush"- As I said, the narrator has had experiences with love before. She knows what falling in love can be like, and she has probably had bad experiences with rushing into romance. She is probably afraid of betrayal if she makes a move with "perfect." "What must it be like to grow up that beautiful? With your hair fallin' into place like dominoes" - A this point in the song, the mood changes abruptly from resentful denial to a sort of wistful adoration. The narrator has begun to develop feelings for "perfect." This is also reflected in the beginning and end, with the lines "Gleaming, twinkling, eyes like sinking ships on water, so inviting, I almost jump in" - she has begun to let her guard down. She "almost jumps in" to being in love with "perfect." thx for coming to my ted talk lol
This is the most perfect description of the song I’ve read. And I COMPLETELY AGREE with you. I just think it's done so beautifully and the storytelling is another level in this. She literally describes a perfect relationship/crush on someone just for the listener to find out it is completely in her head??? Incredible.
The sparkles at every 4th beat in the second verse gets me 😩 it’s so quiet but adds the perfect expensive gold sounding touch. It’s starts at the “to love” in “wonders what it would be like to love you”

The beauty I think she’s referring to here is inner beauty as well as outer beauty. We all know that one person, who is well liked without trying to be, who when you talk to them, they make you feel special. And even though you know they’re like that with everyone you can’t help but fall under their spell and they make you think maybe, just maybe, you deserve to love someone like them. But in the end, you’re just another person passing through their life.

I didn’t like any of the songs upon first listen (though I immediately connected with some songs on folklore, in particular My Tears Ricochet). Evermore takes longer to grow on you.
Woah. Something we don't talk about enough is the progression in her lyrics. It begins with her dreaming of that person until she realizes it's not worth it even though they are desirable and beautiful. So, she lists the reasons she does not see a realistic future with them. The ending is such a beautiful, nostalgic, and tragic conclusion. I actually find it sad even though the beat is energetic:(
"Gold Rush" is a song about how the narrator is in love with someone who is so beautiful that everyone dreams of being with them. The narrator says that she doesn't like how everyone seems to blush, or walk into slow motion, anticipating a slight touch with the person she is in love with. She says that falling in love, then feeling like your flying when you are in love, is okay, until your "bones crush",that is your heart breaks. She has this whole world planned in her head with the person she loves, like "folklore" or a fairytale, but it mixes with the grey of her day old tea, because she realizes that it'll never be possible. She imagined that the world would never see a love as pure as theirs. But none of it is possible. But she knows that the person is classic. Wanted by everyone. And she hates all that attention, so she walks away. Taylor is a literary genius ♥ Edit : WOAH the last time I checked it had like 3 likes and now it has 365??
@Wolfie love, we daydream in order to escape from reality. There's nothing wrong with daydreaming. When it'll be time, the dreams will become real, I promise.
the reason the love is not possible is actually because this song takes place in a daydream, taylor said the second verse is when the narrator realizes and snaps out of it
the fact that taylor writes about heartbreak and longing even though she's now in a happy relationship is everything. just because you've finally found love doesn't mean your past and your heartbreaks aren't still a part of you.
2:42 the last word in this line sounds like it's supposed to be "me" but it's excluded because the writer is still in denial that she will never be in a relationship with her love interest. Goes to show how amazing of a songwriter taylor is
She's always been an amazing storyteller in all of her songs, but Folklore and Evermore really shows us just HOW great of a songwriter she's evolved into.
This song is beautifully sad. She's admiring him from a far. She's daydreaming about a love she could never have because everybody wants him, even her, but with all of his picks of anyone he could ever have, how could he want her? She said "It fades into the (earl) gray of my day old tea cause it could never be."
One thing unique about Taylor from most pop stars of the recent past is that she writes all her music so overtime she actually becomes a better writer and her music gets better and better. I’ve noticed other pop stars get older and their music gets worse because they had beauty and singing talent and then sang others songs. Beauty and singing prowess can fade with age, but a skill of the mind like writing gets stronger. For maybe the first time in history, we get to watch a female artist get better with age.

@@tahirajahra1157 i would disagree w ITHK. simply bc she talks about actually being with the person, unlike this situation where she just admires him from a far, even tho she wishes they could be together

Yes definitely. I wish this song was out a few years ago. I would have saved myself from some heartbreak. The idea that you should let go of things that you know in your heart won't work even though it's so tempting.
Ellen once said "You can do anything you want Taylor Swift." The fact that she's released two albums in the span of five months in quarantine, proves that she actually can.
To be in love with the idea of love with someone one can never have. Making up scenarios, feeling happy, sad all by yourself and finally realising that it's time to put an end to this love...This song feels heartbreakingly beautiful, intimate, relatable. ✨✨✨

this song is stunning and was a total grower for me. the lyricism is just so evocative of a crush who is _just_ out of reach, i feel like we can all relate at some point or another. Taylor is such a consistently impressive songwriter
@@tristianybanez5972 for me colors are more like feelings, so the entire song just has this gold feel to it, its like watching liquid gold when i hear it
I stopped drinking recently and the line " I don't like that falling feels like flying till the bone crush" is the line that reassures me whenever I listen to it that stopping was the right choice. I have never felt so seen in a lyric. Thank you Taylor.
damn. is the only thing i can say for this whole album, for each and every one of her songs, for her influence on me, to her entire career. yes. damn is right.
I’ve just realized that “evermore” album’s tracks are written from the perspective of people who struggle emotionally, mentally, literally every single track.
just how falling/being in loves feels so beautiful- dreamy, full of joy and happiness and feeling like you're flying high up in the sky... until you get your heart broken in the end and suddenly everything comes crashing down to the ground. Your bones are now crushed and you don't feel like you or your bones will ever heal. It's like you don't even remember what that joy was all about and if you can love someone the same way :(
I feel like she's capturing what it's like to get pulled in and enthralled with someone who is abusive and narcissistic. The highs are high, the lows are extremely low when you're involved with someone like that (romantically or not). The reason why I say this is because I just got out of marriage with someone like Taylor is describing. It's like the song is warning us to stay away from people like this.
@@hedieh1492 It could refer to the feeling of anxiety/butterflies you get sometimes when you really like someone. But, This song reminds me a lot of 1989/her songs about Harry Styles. In Style, which is clearly about Harry, she holds a broken mirror in front of her eyes (double vision), and Harry has a rose tattoo (rose blush?) that he got when he was dating Taylor. The line that follows, "I don't like that falling feels like falling til the bones crush" sounds literally like the snowmobile accident too. Just a theory.
i love how each album taylor released since style always had this type of song where the beat flows VERY smoothly and the whole thing sounds like a dream.. (a.k.a getaway car, cruel summer, august, and now gold rush)
To me this beat in particular feels like a fast paced strut, like you’re walking in time with it (especially on the walk past quick brush lyric) and I LOVE it
*Debut* : Stay Beautiful *Fearless* : Superstar *Speak Now* : Sparks Fly *RED* : Treacherous *1989* : Wildest Dreams *Reputation* : Gorgeous *Lover* : I Think He Knows *Folklore* : The 1 *Evermore* : Gold Rush All of these songs give the same message in different aesthetics
@@allisonainaalpuerto1357 Actually if you see closely many of her songs from these two albums are closely interrelated, atleast that's what I feel, dunno about others' opinions tho. Well typical 'Queen of Reference' things ig 😅
@@katnisseverdeen8399 actually they do have connections since folklore & evermore are sister records. like she said in her insta post, they couldn't stop writing songs about this theme & that's how this album came to live !
Taylor: What rhymes with beautiful.. ooh Folklore, the name of my last album! Let’s see.. my mind turns your love into Folklore. Us: Wooooooooooow 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
I think it means that she loves him to the extent where she knows all about his life and dreams of when she'll be able to tell it to her kids or family, which is technically turning his story into folklore. That is assuming this is all within the idea that she hopes to have a future with the person she is singing to. Then again, I'm no Taylor Swift, so this could be a half baked analysis. She is at a different level of genius anyways.... WE LOVE YOU TAYTAY

Taylor is a literary genius ♥
Edit : WOAH the last time I checked it had like 3 likes and now it has 365??
@Wolfie love, we daydream in order to escape from reality. There's nothing wrong with daydreaming. When it'll be time, the dreams will become real, I promise.
you expound it so well coz' idk why i can relate to this song thinking about my celebrity crush. i think i'm inlove with him
@sosooorna !!!!!
the reason the love is not possible is actually because this song takes place in a daydream, taylor said the second verse is when the narrator realizes and snaps out of it

My friend told me that she doesn’t like my taste of music, but my taste of music is Taylor Swift. Now I and her practice social distancing 😂
the fact that taylor writes about heartbreak and longing even though she's now in a happy relationship is everything. just because you've finally found love doesn't mean your past and your heartbreaks aren't still a part of you.

"I don't like that falling feels like flying til bone crush" perfectly describes falling in a dream and abruptly waking up
just how falling/being in loves feels so beautiful- dreamy, full of joy and happiness and feeling like you're flying high up in the sky... until you get your heart broken in the end and suddenly everything comes crashing down to the ground.
The beginning feels like it’s a part of “Epiphany“
I got the same vibe.
I got the 'seven' vibe.

@@hedieh1492 I’d think drinking wine
@@hedieh1492 It could refer to the feeling of anxiety/butterflies you get sometimes when you really like someone. But, This song reminds me a lot of 1989/her songs about Harry Styles. In Style, which is clearly about Harry, she holds a broken mirror in front of her eyes (double vision), and Harry has a rose tattoo (rose blush?) that he got when he was dating Taylor. The line that follows, "I don't like that falling feels like falling til the bones crush" sounds literally like the snowmobile accident too. Just a theory.

I think it means that she loves him to the extent where she knows all about his life and dreams of when she'll be able to tell it to her kids or family, which is technically turning his story into folklore.
