  • Richard Valdemar is a renowned expert on gangs, having spent more than 30 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, where he gained extensive experience in investigating gang-related crimes. Throughout his career, Valdemar specialized in identifying and understanding the complex nature of criminal organizations, particularly street gangs in Southern California. His work often involved infiltrating these groups, analyzing their internal structures, and developing strategies to combat gang violence.
In his analysis of what makes a gang member, Valdemar emphasizes several key factors. He highlights the importance of social and environmental influences, particularly in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods where gangs often offer a sense of belonging and identity. Valdemar points out that many gang members come from broken homes or face a lack of positive role models, leading them to seek acceptance and protection within the gang.
He also notes that gang members often display a distinct set of behaviors, including loyalty to the group, participation in illegal activities such as drug trafficking and violence, and the adoption of specific symbols, language, and clothing to signify their affiliation. Valdemar stresses that gang culture is built on a strict code of conduct that demands respect and punishment for disloyalty or perceived slights, contributing to the perpetuation of violence within these groups.
Additionally, Valdemar underlines the role of peer pressure, glorification of gang lifestyle through media, and recruitment tactics that exploit vulnerable youth. For him, the making of a gang member is a combination of personal choice and external pressure, shaped by the broader socio-economic and cultural environment.

I believe he’s right on the percentage of actual gang members joining gangs. Unfortunately those that do, destroy our barrios. With crime

Awesome video. Different perspectives are vital. Richard Valdimar is a true Legend in the LE community and those that are real gangsters even show him respect.

Most time starts with being attracted to dress style and the wanting to belong to something. Then comes the activities and commitment to each other. The attraction to those organizations comes later once you're in it.. for the most part..

I have really been enjoying the content you've been putting out on your channel. Especially the video you did with Rene Boxer Enriquez discussing the movie "American Me." I think Boxer Enriquez is a fascinating man. I look forward seeing you do more videos with Boxer Enriquez and more videos about gang culture in general.

Hello sir, I believe the parents should be involved with their kids at an early year , like my dad he got me involved with little league baseball and the boy scouts, he taught me to swim , etc., etc to keep me away from gangs even though I grew up in the barrio😊
