Passed my class 2 a few weeks ago and start my new career with an agency tomorrow. I did the tacho and working hours element of the CPC cos I needed to know this stuff, but as others have said, they don't show you how to use the tacho, which I thought they would. I mean they should, it's a fundamental part of trucking. Anyhoo, watched your video and it seems straight forward but will save the video so I can refer to it at 05.00, lol. Thank you
Best explanation I've seen of this thanks 👍 I'm a new driver and it's been like trying to read hieroglyphs for me. First day in a wagon for me today and, despite passing the theory test, was clueless about using the machine in the real world.
cheers Luke! First day as a HGV driver today and I've watched his video a few times because as you say we aren't taught how to do this! We should be, it's a legal requirement to know this stuff.
Things have changed since i drove trucks in the UK 20yrs ago, we had round carbon tacho discs that you placed behind the speedometer! Here in New Zealand we still use the old paper log books!! Keep on truckin!
Cheers buddy. I' ve just passed my class 2 and I haven't a clue how you use the tachograph . Seems simple enough , just getting an idea before I start a job.
Many thanks. Returning to class 1 after a 12 year break and they've brought in these digi tachos since I last drove HGV and this video has helped a lot.
Hi Luke cheers for all the info in your vids , love it as I understand it . Started watching you about 2 months ago , you made me change my career, so in the last 2 months I’ve went from being a school caretaker passed class 2 and class 1 , got myself a job Monday been doing extra training this week in the yard getting ready for my first solo and shitting it lol
Hi Luke. Just got a 7.5 tonne job and I cant wait to start. You are the first place I came to, to learn. Great channel..... Ps I am doing my Class 2 in 6 months time....
Thanks Luke!Started two days ago.Had to say that i know how to work tacho just to get the job.Just after pulling in for my 30 and basically shitting myself coz didn't know for how long exactly i was driving. After your video i know how to check how much of driving time i have left snd etc.THANK YOU SO MUCH!👍💪
Hi there Luke mate. I have a question. What do you do with your taco card when you get out your truck? Say your at the services on the motorway and you want some food. Do you take your card out or leave it in and only take it out at the end of the day?? Please reply bud.
I done a 10 hour day 2 days ago and didn’t record any breaks as I’m useless with the taco machine and I told the guys back at base and they kindly said they would put me with someone for the whole day just to get clued up with it all but now I have watched this video it all seems a bit of a waste of time I think I ACTUALLY get it!! Thanks for the helpful video 👍
I am picking up a van for the first time next week that uses a tacho. It's just a straight pickup and drive to a destination. The journey time might take me over 4.5 hrs but I am not sure. if I need to stop for a break, do I just stop and the tacho goes into break or do I have to set it. Once I have had the break do I just start driving again or again do I need to set it?
Great stuff luke c. So, If I was stuck in a que on the motorway for an hr for example would the tacho symbol change to other work to save driving hrs ? Thanks in advance
Thanks I'm going on a course to calibrate tacho machines so it was great to get a introduction on how to use the basic functions so thank you very much.
Passed class 2 today. I dont own a digi card yet my company has asked me to drive the 7ht waggon tomorrow is it ok to drive it or do i need to have my digi card ?
Luke, when you want to take a full 45min break do you just let it tick over or do you need to do another input on the tacho? .. thanks m8 video really helped
Quick question Luke. You ejected your card while tacho was set on other work. If you start a new day like you showed without doing manual entry how the time between ejection and insertion will be recorded? I'm assuming as a break right? Tacho thinks if you don't have anything to put on using manual Entry that means you were on your break?
Hi luke do you ever have to do manual entries and if so for what reason? I thought as long as you enter card at shift start show 15 minutes for checks and show breaks in accordance with law your fine i cant get my head around manual entry on day to day basis any answers would be good cheers
@@anthonyhudson4318 I do a manual entry each day I start at 4am I put the card in then it asks if I want a manual entry click yes then I go to yesterday's date then add 15-20 minutes of other work on to my finish time to cover for things like paperwork and vehicle checks then click ok it will take you on to the current day then enter that you was on rest until your start tim e.g 4 am click ok then enter again it will still be on the same date (today's) then it will say the current time with other work simble then just click enter and that should be about it. But believe it or not you can get tacho simulators to practice on so you don't get an infringement. Hope this kind of helps.
There can be a few reasons like as stitchupman said to cover time in the office/dispatch doing paperwork or if you drive a vehicle that does not have a tacho fitted. A bus driver only has to record the driving if the route is over 50km, but as soon as they do 1 50km route (eu rules) all driving including under 50km (domestic rules) have to be recorded and not all buses are tachoed so manual entry is required. i can't remember for how long though.

Confused if you do 15 min break in six hours then another 30 on sixth hour if you had say hour half driving time left in the four and half what happens to the hour and half you had left? Any answers please
All you can do is keep driving, get a printout and write on it the reason why, e.g. Stuck in traffic, road, time. POA is you're stopped but maybe required to move at any time (I think)
POA is when you KNOW IN ADVANCE you will be sitting around doing fuck all, it saves your driving hours. So you go from the yard to 1st delivery..you know it ain't open for another 30 mins/hour etc, whack it on POA instead of other work

Damian Joniec you can park anywhere pretty much, a lot of the things that they tell you is fear mongering, you think it's dead strickt util you start working as a hgv driver. Iv fucked my Tachograph a few times but still never been pulled and if it's passed 28 days then they can't do anything, it just stays on your record for 12 months until you over lap it the following year. The only thing they will do is mark your reg so they know to keep an eye on you so you might get pulled again if they see you but the chances of them pulling you anytime soon after that is very very slim.
When Luke pressed the OK button at 8:02 to confirm NO, if he pressed either the up/down arrows and selected Yes then pressed OK. The machine would print a receipt of Luke's last 24 hours actives. Most companies don't like their drivers to do this as the paper roll are expensive.
Beware it is the driver's responsibility to make sure the tachograph machine prints correctly and there is a roll in the print head with enough paper for the print out, plus it is also the drivers responsibility to have a spare roll in their possessions. If either the machine print head is empty or the drive doesn't have a print roll The Driving Agency/Police can give the driver a fine. I believe it is around £200 per time.
@@Sammyboy1991 cool. It's a shame no one mentions you need to buy one I only found out by luck before I passed I spoke to a driver i asked where he got it from.
actually you can move in your break time. but only for less than a half minute. in that 30seconds you have to get the vehicle to a complete stop and Press the button again, otherwise you have to do the whole 15 or 30 minutes over. I actually took the 15 min breaks in a traffic jam a couple of times like that.
If your driving for 10 hours in a day ,can you take a 45 min after 5 hours or is it still after 4.5 hours. I'm between theory and practical tests so trying to learn still.😊
+Felix Herald BEFORE 4 hours and 30 minutes of driving you must have a full 45 minute break. You can have 15 in the morning, then 30 after, or you can have 45 in one go.

Shalom my friend 🙏

Very helpful indeed
many thanks, very useful vid cos as you say no one tells you how to use them your just expected to know
i am thinking about doing this is it all good to do
how do you change the month
What about doing a printout as well for today's work you have been doing, how would you do that?
@@Oheky I always get a printout each day for my own piece of mind.
Do you not put it on rest/break before you finish?
I never do but the following day I do manual entry and tell it that way.
does it switch to other work in traffic ?
Yes
ok
Brilliant videos mate thanks for the good work I just got much class 2.
Hi Luke. Will you have to buy the Tachograph card once you gain your Cat C license?
Yes it's about £30 but you can get one anytime you don't need a hgv licence to have a digi card.
@@stichupman Cheers mate. I have already bought one now anyway.
@@Sammyboy1991 cool. It's a shame no one mentions you need to buy one I only found out by luck before I passed I spoke to a driver i asked where he got it from.
@@stichupman I would've thought it would've been included in the course fee. But obviously not lol.
@@Sammyboy1991 no just another money spinner lol.
Hi what was -24h day "no" - mean when you about take the card out at 8.02 time ?
What if you change it to yes ?
+Call me Mr then it does a print out.
actually you can move in your break time. but only for less than a half minute. in that 30seconds you have to get the vehicle to a complete stop and Press the button again, otherwise you have to do the whole 15 or 30 minutes over. I actually took the 15 min breaks in a traffic jam a couple of times like that.
I would'nt recommend it mate!
Best video around, very helpful everything I need to know for monday cheers.
Cheers fella . New pass here . Was more scared of using and possibly screwing Tacho up then the actual driving class 2 :) .
Just been dumped in a lwb sprinter plus 20ft trailer!! Ace video, helped me a lot, cheers!
Flash me in when I pass ya ;)
thanks guss
Do they make lucus kienzle still
thank luke very usefull for us new drivers
If your driving for 10 hours in a day ,can you take a 45 min after 5 hours or is it still after 4.5 hours.
I'm between theory and practical tests so trying to learn still.😊
+Felix Herald BEFORE 4 hours and 30 minutes of driving you must have a full 45 minute break. You can have 15 in the morning, then 30 after, or you can have 45 in one go.
4.30.then break.no exceptions
You can only drive 10 hours 2 days of the week, every other is 9
