    As a Nikon AND Canon user. I am by no means a fanboy… but I just want to say that people who give Nikon shit are delusional and probably in denial… people who bought the z9 2 years ago for being a great camera have an even better camera today, which other brand can say the same? Genuine question 🤔

      You see things as they are, and are a voice of reason. More evidence...I think the announcement the other day that the Z9 will be the handheld camera that the astronauts use on the upcoming Artemis Moon landings caused some reaction, even with Nikon fans, that this is something new. Nikon and Nasa have been partners for 50 years. Maybe rather than delusional/denial, you should have just said ‘brainwashed.’ Happens with everything these days, it seems.

    I was hoping for pre-capture in RAW. That would make the Z9 perfect for my use-case. That's my last wish-list item, other than a cut-down menu system where you just see the items you added from the full menu.

    Thanks Matt. Really great that Nikon are continuing to develop the Z9 firmware - that's really positive, however, after watching all your video I confess to being rather frustrated. There are quite a number of enhancements there which, I am sure, will enhance the Z9 experience but there is nothing that screams out to me "that's what I really wanted"! Sadly, the one enhancement that I really DO want is still missing - Pre-Capture in RAW. Olympus have been offering this in their OM-1 Mk1 & II so come on Nikon, PLEASE give us that. Personally, I don't care about Pre-Capture at 120fps, 30fps is perfectly adequate but it really does need to be in RAW. I am frightened that Nikon are holding this back for their next camera and might never give it to us in the Z9 or Z8. As a 75 year old pensioner keen on bird and wildlife photography the Z9 & Z8 I now own will almost certainly be the last camera bodies I buy so I really want this feature in RAW for these bodies

      Hi Brian, it's hard to say what might come next, as there are so many different needs for so many different use cases. Some want more cine features, some want more FPS, some want even more AF tweaks, some want custom shutter sounds, some want more fine grain features. Fingers crossed we all get what we would love over time :)

    • @nightowlnzab
      @nightowlnzab 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      It is odd that Nikon have not yet released RAW pre-capture, even at a slower FPS if necessary. Even Canon offers a rather nifty RAW pre-capture feature where you can scrub back and forth through the set and extract a JPG or RAW in-camera.

    The firmware updates are great, but I still have two items on my wishlist to make this the best system. 1) RAW pre-capture and 2) a burst delete function. Shooting sports I often shoot a burst because something might happen, but if it doesn’t, I’d like to be able to delete the burst in one step rather than have to go through each frame individually.

    Great video Matt! Regarding a14, my understanding is that, if the setting is turned on, when you manually focus, the lens will automatically go to max aperture, giving a very narrow depth of field (thinking say 85mm f/1.2). This allows for very accurate focusing, especially when paired with focus peaking. Once you begin to take pictures, the camera goes back to your previous aperture setting, while holding your focusing distance. Cheers!

  • @waveland
    @waveland 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    They fixed my two biggest video gripes. Top of my list-the camera PASM mode setting is now independent between stills and video (which previously made quick changes between stills and video slow and clunky). That’s great news. And you can now used BT timecode and the external grip at the same time. So now I can begin to use the Z9 in my regular video workflow. That’s a big deal.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @waveland
      @waveland 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, a pleasant surprise to have both issues corrected. For that matter, a pleasant surprise Nikon continues to enhance the Z9 so thoroughly rather than holding us hostage to a new camera purchase. You also mention Nikon/Red. And all depends on whether Nikon can retain key talent through the transition. There's always a small chance this will be one of the few exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, proud and independent companies like Red tend to hire independent minded (iconoclastic) staff, and when all of a sudden they have to start reporting up many more layers of bureaucracy for approvals, the independent folks tend to look for another "disrupter" opportunity elsewhere. From the outside it looks like a total mismatch, but hopefully not, Red has been an important player in cine, constantly pushing the status quo. We will know much more in a few years.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@waveland My guess is Nikon will take very seriously who RED are. And I think that is exactly the reason this is all happening. RED are a disruptor in the cine market, and I suspect Nikon is hoping to build on all the good. Of course nothing like this will ever go perfectly, but they have clearly stated RED will remain seperate concern like MRMC I believe. If they take their time, share IP where needed and build on each others strengths, it could be very fruitful. RED will have far more potential resources across the board, and Nikon will have a new/more market for selling cameras and lenses and motion control robots. It is all possible, just needs to be done right. And indeed all good things take time.

  • @waveland
    @waveland 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Okay. Firmware 5.00 installed. The mode fix is great, but as a commercial video shooter we still don’t have fractional frame rates and Nikon has yet to squeeze in at least the 1/48th kludge in lieu of shutter angles. They’ve made important strides with video, but this is still not a camera you can use on larger productions where the spec sheet may say 23.976p or it might say straight 24p, and the camera must be able to output the exact frame rate required. For personal projects, the mode issue was my biggest gripe with the camera and it will be great to flip from stills in A to video in M and not have to rebuild my exposure settings every time I switch. That’s a huge quality of life improvement. The rest will probably have to wait for a Z-mount Komodo! 😊

    Cool features, I guess adding subject detection during MF isn't possible like the Zf, Z8 didn't get it and now the Z9 isn't getting that either. I would like to see the high frequency flicker presets to come to the Z8, I forget to set that up when shooting in low light and then have to setup after a few shots and it takes a bit to dial it in, presets makes it easier.

    30fps and Pre-capture are still in JPEG. Wish Nikon implement this if a function like Metering is assigned to a Function button, user does not have to hold the Function button while rotating the Command Dial. In other words, it would be more convenient if the Function button is pressed, the assigned function/feature will display on either evf or (and) monitor so the user just rotates the Command Dial to select the desired feature and hit OK button to complete the process. Thanks -ANTHER great gift from Nikon - but a major update - not at first look. I wonder what has changed under the hood to justify this.
    OK -- now I have had a chance to look and watch a few other vids.
    - C15 fps added - new 15 fps can be used with prerelease but still only JPG (Arg!!)
    - AF fixes (including AF fine tune bug) and enhancements
    - auto-capture changes
    - high speed flickr changes
    - LV zoom now upto 400%
    - a few Network Menu and GPS fixes/changes
    - yes Z9 now has Z8 portrait features
    - yes some vid changes - but still no false colour display nor shutter angle.
    Key other diffs between Z9(5.00) and Z8(2.00) other than physical:
    - Pixel shift still only in Z8/Zf.
    - Photo Shooting - Tone Mode - Normal/HLG in Z8, which allows access to HEIF images rather than JPG in Photo Shooting -- still NOT available in Z9
    - Z8 and Z9 menus very close (~when including MB-N12 fns and ignoring other button diffs). Custom settings D3 in Z9 allows Limit release mode selection - no other material differences I can quickly see in Custom Settings menus at the item level - no doubt some diffs deeper in.
    I am sure there are more in the details.

    Firmware 4.10 was a great step forward mainly for bird eye detect that has put the Z9 up with the best autofocus wise, its a great pity that the pre capture feature that nikon installed into their full frame cameras in advance of most others is now very much lagging behind most others due to its limited use in jpg only, I bet there are a lot of disappointed Z9 owners like myself that where anticipating the addition of the use of raw files here with firmware 5.0 maybe in the next update... although I have a feeling this will now be saved for the next generation of the Z9.

    Hi, the one thing I wanted, was the Z8s focus mode functionality on one button press. As I use both bodies, it is frustrating to have the upgrade to the Z8 and not Z9, or both. My muscle memory, gets confused. Let’s hope they realise that the more the function buttons match, with focus modes help with second body choice. Thanks TonyH

    Hi Matt, are you sure Z9 now has 4 separate memory banks for stills and 4 separate memory banks for video? In my opinion there are still just 4 banks used for both stills and video, but now each bank can store separately just shooting mode (P, A, S or M) in addition to exposure parameters for stills and video. All other settings are shared between stills and video.

    This firmware update is baffling! Its full of minor quality of use improvements that most users won’t care about and none of the big rumoured improvements that we all hoped for….And even worse is that this update didn’t include the same updated features in the recent Z8 update!!! (Pixel-shifting etc). WTF. So now the Z8 has more features than the more expensive flagship Z9???!!
    I have been waiting personally for Nikon to pull their finger out and add open-gate recording and external SSD recording options…Both are offered by much cheaper cameras and both are important for film work to be taken seriously with these cameras.
    I don’t know if Nikon are even listening to their clients and or this latest dumbed down Firmware update to the Z9 has something to with the Red acquisition but I’m sure there are many users like me that are just getting fedup with Nikon’s weird choices of features.

    Just a thought: Most of us realize that it's possible to get great images from older cameras and that just about every camera manufacturer has a camera on the market capable of capturing wonderful images. But Nikon has gone above and beyond other camera manufacturers with their ongoing firmware updates of already wonderful cameras. Well done, Nikon! It also has me wondering if we can call this "firmware updating" to be a corporate philosophy, AND would this firmware updating philosophy translate to upcoming Red cine camera offerings? I expect that Red camera equipment buyers, at say $30,000 (U.S.) for a camera body, would love to know that their purchase is capable of being an even better purchase as it receives these firmware tweaks.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography

      Hi Andrew, I must say I am rather confused. Nikon makes no statements about future FW updates. People buy the camera that exists today. And thus how can they complain or be disappointed about something missing which never was promised? Yes there have been rumours. They are rumours and should be taken for what they are, unsubstantiated without any reference to timing. We as users are getting free updates. Some are larger some are smaller. They cost nothing and improve our experience.

    I have the Z9 and this is the first firmware update that I haven’t been too bothered by. Had my camera since fw 1.0, so updating is like falling off a log, lemon-squeezey. I am a little disappointed that we didn’t get pixel-shift shooting. Bit incongruous that it’s in the Z8 and not in the Z9. The Z8 is marketed as the baby Z9. It doesn’t seem right that the flagship doesn’t have pixel-shift? It must be an oversight. Perhaps it’s coming in firmware v6.0, after all it’s just a case of porting it over from its little brother. Right?
