    When you say "One of a kind", this is it. R.I.P. George.

    I will never forget his matches with macho man. Savage acted so discumbombulated by him and his infatuation for Elizabeth it just clicked unbelievably. Probably the most memorable angle for me in the eighties.

    Yo i just watched the match hes talking about! Kamala got a huge pop when he climbed to the top rope! Great psychology on Georges part with the stretcher!

    • @greense65
      @greense65 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And he was using that psychology not to get himself over, but to get Kamala over. He's someone you would want to work with.

      He was a man of few words. And he had trouble speaking with a mouth full of foam.

    I remember the match so eloquently described by George very well. I believe I still have it on an old coliseum video vhs in the basement at this moment.

    The days of kayfabe... among my earliest memories of watching pro-wrestling on TV was back in the early 80s when George Steele put a jobber into his finishing move -- the flying hammerlock -- and dislocated his shoulder.

    I remember that commercial. He was in the commercial with Tony Randall, I'm thinking. At the end, Tony asks him about the computer, and Steele says something like, "It's great! Everyone should have one." It was the first time I had ever heard the Animal speaking coherently. But if you watch his 70's promos on TH-cam, he spoke coherently then, too. I don't know when they dumbed him down.

    • @duncreg
      @duncreg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was Vince McMahon's fault. George said that McMahon called him up after a promo and he thought it was going to be to compliment him. Instead, McMahon complained about his using big words and being too eloquent! (I believe George had a master's degree in history). I think this happened again and then the next time George goes out and just speaks in one syllable words. He gets another call from McMahon and he expects him to say he's sorry; instead he says "That's perfect! That's what I'm looking for!" 🙂
      All of his gimmicks seemed to come about by accident. Steele had been out at lunch or dinner before a match and had some garlic or something so he ends up putting a lot of Certs breath fresheners in his mouth a few minutes before the match. The Certs ended up turning his tongue green! He didn't realize it at first but the crowd ate it up; that began that gimmick. I forget the details about the turnbuckles... some promotion gave out something to fans that was stuffed and the crowd started throwing them at him and he bit it and they loved it and then he tried it with the turnbuckle the next night or something and the crowd went wild.

    Kamala and Steele were NEVER going to be champions. They were there to entertain and tell a story. They were both excellent performers and had many great matches. Kamala was an extremely good athlete for a big man. He could really move and work in the ring.

      George Steele's character wasn't designed to win matches. He was there to be outrageous and rile up the crowd. Steele was a mid card guy like Koko B. Ware.

    Other wrestlers said George was a locker room snitch. He kinda sounds like a snake.

    • @gamera5160

      In my experience, anyone accusing people of being a snitch was probably a snitch themselves.

    • @clivet3252
      @clivet3252 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think he was a snake, he was just an old veteran who had Vince's ear and so himself as a go between. It's maybe not what you want in the locker room but it's a bit different to a young guy pretending to be your best mate and running to Vince.
