Being able to screenshot with messages and suggestions strategically placed was the best way to communicate to the Design and Engineering team my suggestions. Your tutorial was easy to understand and I LOVE YOU! Thank you immensely.

    Hi Gary. Thank you once again for a video that showed me things I never knew about my Mac, even though I thought I "knew" everything. Here is an addition to this particular tutorial: for some reason, the circle shape comes down as an which you may not want. If the oval shape is selected (it will have blue dots all around it) then holding the Shift key while you move one of the corner blue dots will force it into a perfect circle. Likewise, with the line or arrow tool if you grab one end of the line or arrow (when selected) and holding the Shift key down, it will force it to perfectly vertical, horizontal or 45°. I hope this helps. Thank you again for your wonderful videos!

    • @macmost

      Yes. Use Shift+Command+5 and set the options to save to a location (Desktop, for example) and turn on Show Floating Thumbnail. Then take a screenshot using any of the keyboard shortcuts and click on the floating thumbnail. Mark up the screenshot. Click on the background of the screenshot (so nothing is selected -- important!) and then Command+c to copy the whole thing. Then click the trash icon to dismiss without saving. Now Command+v to paste the screenshot with markup into whatever you are doing.

      @@macmost Appreciate your response and this is a really useful thing to do for productivity on MAC. I tried your suggestion and it did not work for me, for some reason(s). I did however find a workaround that actually worked for me. Use Shift+Command+5, go to Options, and select Clipboard. Now, take a screenshot using any of the keyboard shortcuts, such as Shift+Command+4. Notice the floating thumbnail will no longer show, because the screenshot is placed onto the clipboard, ready to be pasted. Then, paste it in any app you are working with. One drawback of this method is that MAC does not give me a chance to markup the screenshot before pasting it to my app. Hope this helps.

    Great tips! I'm new to Mac as this is what was issued by my employer. I'm trying to figure out how to take a screenshot, do the mark ups, then immediately copy the image without saving the file. Sometimes I need to do this to quickly send in a messaging app or other tool that doesn't appear in the 'share' menu. In the windows snipping tool its very easy to mark up then copy the image without saving it. Is there a way to do this on Mac?

      The best way to do that is as a function off your website content management software. Not sure what you use, but many allow you to do this. Otherwise, a graphics tool or a Shortcut is next best. Like: th-cam.com/video/VyEGoKNiFkk/w-d-xo.html

    Mac screenshot tool is so complicated to use, and I'm a Mac loyalist. The "copy" missing from it is a huge, intentional oversight. Windows screenshot tool is so simple to take a picture, make some scribbles, then decide to copy or save it. I can't believe something on Windows is easier than on Mac, but in this case, it 100 times true.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to save it, then the method I show is exactly what you want: screenshot, scribble, save. If you want to copy it, set Save To to "Clipboard" or select an area and Command+C. Right to clipboard. If you want to do screenshot-markup-clipboard, one way is to set the Save To to "Preview" and then take a screenshot, it opens in Preview. Then you can markup, select all, copy and close.

    • @nickp4793
      @nickp4793 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost Its too many keystrokes. And if your last screenshot was save instead of save to clipboard, the next will revert to it. On windows, you take the screenshot, then you can scribble, and a huge copy/save button is visible. I take screenshots all day at my dayjob using Windows, annotate them, and then paste into powerpoint or one note. When I come home on the mac and try to do the same, I want to smash the computer. I'm about to spend $40 on a screenshot tool because the built in one is so cumbersome. I appreciate you video, however.

    • @nickp4793
      @nickp4793 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost Here is another caveat: when on my M1 Air, if I select save so the icon of the picture floats on the bottom right of the screen, there is both the sketch tool and the draw tool. However on my M1 Ultra, there is only the sketch tool. Its little inconsistencies like this that make this screenshot tool so cumbersome. Another one is the icons at the top are so tiny, and they all look so similar. You can barely even tell when one is selected. This has been an issue going back nearly 20 years, staring in the Preview application, and now extending to the screenshot application. Apple's UX dept completely missed the boat on this user interface, IMO. Another caveat, to do the command C to get the picture to copy/paste into a ppt document, your mouse has to be in a specific place in the picture for it to copy. The whole thing is just bad.

    A great tutorial that show-cases the power and flexibility of this tool - there's more to Mac screenshots than meets the eye! :) Thanks, Gary!
    PS: One thing that I dislike about the built-in Mac screenshot is that you have to save it to file. I would like to *annotate* a screenshot and copy the final result directly to my clipboard - without saving a file. But I don't see any way to do that...

    • @macmost
      @macmost  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can do exactly that. Instead of clicking Done, just Command+C. Then click the Trash icon instead.

    Nice tutorial, thanks. I still find that Windows native Snipping Tool , then pasting into MS Paint, is so much more intuitive, faster, easier, fewer steps, more feature rich... than how Mac handles this. I would think Trillion Dollar Apple would provider better built-in options for simple snipping and annotating, without having to memorized yet more keyboard combos and all of these... steps.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that on Mac too if you don't like this method for some reason. You can use a keyboard shortcut to "snip" the whole screen or an area and it goes right to the clipboard. Then paste into any image editing app you want.

      @@macmost when you click on the little screenshot that shows up in the bottom right corner of the screen to add annotations, you now have to click on the pencil icon and then click on the line weight icon to start drawing. Previously you just started drawing.
      Then after drawing on a screenshot you cmd + c or right click copy and paste the image only to not have the annotations and just the original image.
      I think I just figured it out. If you draw on an image, you need to then click on the top toolbar area, then click back to the image and copy paste it.

    I wanted to know if there is a way to use Preview to create a box around the text, with the text being in-between the box as opposed to inside it?
    This is a bit complicated to explain, so here's a reference: drive.google.com/file/d/1N7NGK8qkz-TUKa_95Q3ULs_2Xxb8uKx2/view?usp=sharing
    If yes, I'd love to know how! Thanks again!

      I'm not sure which part of that example you are trying to create, but you can do it all in Preview if you really try. But it would be easier to use a graphics app or Pages or something. Using Preview for precise document creation it is probably the wrong tool for that.
