Another use of slow motion cinematography is when you use scale models, and want liquids, explosions and gravity to look like natural speed at full scale. That's a technical rather than narrative use of slow motion.
There's a great slow-normal-slow motion shot in Le Mans with Steve McQueen, and also a lot of great slo mo in Ron Howard's Backdraft. The fire combined with lighting, sound, and filming techniques becomes a character. One of the greatest uses of slo mo in recent years is in Killing Me Softly. Perhaps it is not an "action" film but the Brad Pitt/Ray Liotta shooting in the rain is as good as any film ever made. It's interesting too that the song Love Letters In The Sand made for just the right music and was in fact used before Killing Me Softly years before by David Lynch in the shoot-out scene in Blue Velvet, also employing slow motion, particularly with window glass. Great video StudioBinder!
Glad you like them! I really think they are as memorable as the other great choices in the video. Since exactly the same music was used in the two films I mentioned, I would love to see them played side-by-side. It would be remarkable. There are probably other movies with an interesting take on the same song too. Well, not to sound sappy but it's just wonderful to see the various subjects showcased here and to see the discussions afterwards by so many people knowledgeable about movies. It's kind of amazing how those memorable scenes from movies stay with us. @@StudioBinder
@StudioBinder - I'm loving your videos & have learned so much from them. Any chance you could make a video on how to include/write subplots? Especially relating to your video on the 3 Act structure? Thanks!
Could you please explain the process of shooting the fight sequence in the clip from 'Immortals', where there is a mixture of slow motion and actual pace. Have always been curious about such a shot.

Film director here. Depends a lot on the director's intention. In my case, I like shooting slow-motion in 48fps, so the shots can look as great as possible easily.

One of the few things that hasn't stood the test of time from Lord of the Rings is the "Not filmed for slow motion, but presented in slow motion" sequences. Thankfully they're few and far between. (We won't mention the GoPro footage in The Hobbit. Or The Hobbit in general)

Hi bro, what about FIFA football matches' goal or other tactical slow-motion review?? they are shot on usual cameras..
I'm sure they're shot on higher frame rates too
So which is better? Slo mo during filming or in Post?
During. It's better to shoot at the frame rate your trying to aim for. Using 24fps and slowing it down makes your footage jittery.
You'd have to set the higher frame rate during shooting so you have enough frame for a smooth slow motion in post
@@ScaredStraightProductions wow. Thank you

Was slow motion used in Bruce Lee films? I can't think of any, although it's said they slowed down Bruce's scenes to make them easier to see.
Genuine question:
Why film in higher frame rate and then slow the footage down? Why not just film at 24 fps and then slow the footage down?
