I had not known Braniff International had the Braniff Express and Braniff Primere. This was interesting to see.

Did Braniff ever follow through with the Braniff Premier plan? I know Braniff converted many 727-200s to the single Texas Class but never remember seeing any evidence that were was a sub-fleet of Braniff Premier 727s.

Yes indeed we did, beginning in September 1981. Braniff operated certain flights offering only Coach seating onboard 727s and then Premier First Class 727s, which featured both First Class and Coach. All international remained Coach and First Class offerings.

@@braniffairwaysfoundation451 Thanks so much! Aa a teenager, I had a number of wonderful flights on Braniff International. Off the top of my head, I recall flying on BN 51 DFW-MEX 6/78 and BN 706 DFW-MIA 8/78, as well as BN 901 JFK-MIA 1/79. When I went on to college, unfortunately, BN did not fly routes I could use to get to and from. BN shut down when I was in my 2nd year.

This was Chairman John Casey's attempt to counter low cost carriers that were eating Braniff's business. All it did was confuse travelers and piss off first class passengers who found out they were booked on an all coach flight. Casey's successor dropped the dual identity in favor of Texas Class, which was all coach with discounted fares. It too didn't work...but for many other reasons.

I'm thinking that it would be problematic for an airline to fly different planes that offered different classes of service, especially today.

      I think your right.

Didn't Delta do that with Song (as well as United with Ted) back in the early 2000s?
Both Song and Ted were cheaper no frills versions of their parent airline but didn't last long.
The only one I can think of that's still around is Air Canada's cheaper division called "Rouge".

A concept that was repeatedly tried over the next few decades and ultimately never worked. Continental Lite, US Airways MetroJet, Delta Express, United’s Ted, Delta’s Song…

TWA brat checking in. Didn’t you guys treat MCI as a hub? I remember as a kid it was You and TwA owned that airport.

Hi Bjork Yes, that is correct. Kansas City, a Braniff city since 1931, had always played a significant role in our operations but after June 1, 1979, it became a second hub behind DFW. Braniff, Inc., Airways, Inc.'s, successor, also centered its operations on MCI.
