I have to emotionally prepare myself for it, every time I listen to that song. It hits something so deep and so raw that I can't just play this song and then go about my day as if something indefinable and dark at the core of my heart didn't just crack open and taste the air.
@@SleepyFawn Thank you! It’s going pretty good. I’m taking better care of myself and better care of my Dog. I’ve been going on hikes. I even applied for a job today.
What's funny to me is that for Nirvana four takes before nailing a song was considered a lot. I know most big bands I've heard similar kinds of history stories of spending all day or even a couple days trying to get just one song is considered normal.
even funnier was, that a lot of Bleach, which was done on the Sub Pop label, was done in 1 take...with a few songs going right into the next all without a cut. probably contributing to only costing ~$600 to produce.
I read that Nirvana used to practice all day all the time. That's probably why they were so efficient in the studio. They mastered their songs and style before they stepped foot in the studio.
Thats totally things it’s amazing and powerful and that is next level producer skills. To record where it sounds good and not be chained to the booth. I can’t imagine that song overly polish. It’s raw and hits you in the feels.
I visited that bridge last week while on vacation. It's the bridge from the song, and it's part of Kurt Cobain Memorial Park in Aberdeen, WA. Very small park in the middle of nowhere. You can take pics of everything in the park in a few minutes.
It was a genius decision to make it the official listed closing track* on Nevermind (*Yes, technically "Endless, Nameless" closes-out Nevermind, but it's an unlisted track that you had to wait thru about ten minutes of silence in order to listen to on the CD copy. Plus, after the initial pressing of the first 50,000-100,000 copies of the album in that format, DGC dropped the unlisted track from the subsequent batch of pressings before adding it back in on the next batch and on all subsequent batches; so, there are copies of Nevermind out there where the album ends right at the conclusion of play for "Something In The Way")
I used to dis Butch Vig for making Nirvana sound too "candy" or "perfect" for the grunge scene...but after seeing a few of these interviews, I realize....dude was doing a great service...to the band, to Kurt, to the fans, to David Geffen, to everyone! I'll never dis Butch Vig again.
This is why Vig got the job. He knew how to react to Cobain in the moment. He didn't recoil in fear at the young man's rage nor did he get annoyed when Cobain went silent in pure frustration. Vig was a true producer. He listened to the artist. Instead of pontificating and wagging his finger as if to say "I'm the producer, IM THE BOSS" 😅 Hey Gar ☺️
I often wondered if something in the way (the song title itself) was inspired by the Beatles “something” (in the way she moves) as I’m aware the Beatles were a huge influence on Kurt. If memory serves me, John Lennon sang “revolution” while lying on his back.
If I somehow make it as a musician, I will make sure to tune my guitar in the middle of a music video (referencing Kurt in the Smells Like Teen Spirit music video)
