Yo! Let me know if you enjoyed this video on the early days of fingerboarder's style :) If you've enjoyed this video, and want me to do more analysis on fingerboarding, leave me a comment below!
Definitely enjoy this edit Justin and I are watching now just got back from street fingerboarding filming all day! Great video to tune into after a great finger physics day! Thank you
Matt Johnson here. Great video. My kids found it and we just took a trip down memory lane. I still have all the ramps and even the ramps Darren made for me when we were in South America. Those were the days. One day I'll make a documentary.
Dude! For real?! If this is Matt Johnson, you don't know how many people you influenced in Flying Fingers! Your flat bar skills, that wood skatepark, that "brick" six-stair with the handrail! I was making cardboard ramps all over my basement imitating your builds and the rest of the guys from Fingers of Fury. I've never seen Flying Fingers 2, you gotta release it! Fingerboarding is a whole scene now! Much love and respect! ✌🛹
@@cdplaya Wow thanks man, it’s an honour. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Yeah I think I might have some history in this game, being first real „Blackriver“ rider and stuff like that. 😅✌🏻
Was going to do a part 2 on the period between 2000-2006 or so! My thought was to organize it this way: Pre-Tech Deck + early Tech Deck day -> 2000-2006 -> 2007-2014 -> 2014- Now!
Could honestly be a 3 or 4 part series if you wanted it to be. You break down styles well, made me think about my own style for the first time in a while lol
THANK you Chris for doing videos like this. I’m sometimes kept up at night by the wealth of knowledge sitting online in old videos and forum posts that’s now completely forgotten. So much of our history as a community is only backed up in one place. This type of video you’ve made is the perfect way to keep some of this older content organized and “maintained” in a sense.
You're welcome - I realized the same thing, that once the forums died, most of the archived history was gone! Someone needed to share the old stories with the community and get some exposure to these "absolute legends" 😁
Really enjoy your vids man, and it makes me feel good seeing other grownups still into fingerboarding, as I'm only getting back to it at 25. Was definitely too young to witness the days you depict in the video, but it's still so enjoyable! Got a new subscriber 😁
nice work. I remember those old videos. And what a blast from the past seeing that black plastic funbox, i totally forgot I had one of those back in the day. I unfortunately when I was a teenager I broke my last two knuckles and the outer most bone in my hand which now stops me from tucking my fingers.
Thank you! Yea, that style was very common in the old days (Darin Langhorst & Matt Johnson do it too!) :) We used to remove the tech deck griptape and use electrical tape to achieve the same thing!
Very nice video. There was a lot more to discuss about TKY's style in my opinion (including things like realistic board grabbing, timing in tricks, and an almost vertical stance, among others)
Yes! I agree with you - I couldn't find a ton of footage from him from the old days. We will have to make a TKY dedicated video to explore his style and impact on fingerboarding!
Great video as always. I love the detailed analysis on each person's style. I think I would just break it down to the different characteristics, some of which you highlighted: Tucked/untucked/semi-tucked Flat/tipped fingers Realistic/exaggerated heights Realistic/pressure/unrealistic tricks Realistic pop/scoop pop (board over hand)/sticky finger pop Simple/technical tricks/combos Perhaps there are also other aspects on how clean tricks are landed: caught high in air/caught above ground/bounced fingertip landing/knuckle landing landing over both sets of bolts/landing parallel fingers like riding skis flow during and between tricks (no awkward stops or rolling backwards when landing in a grind or between tricks) Rotating tricks fully to a multiple of 180, except over hips Anyway, it's a great take on fingerboard styles with excellent highlighted examples. Would be interested to see other parts of this series.
@@cdplaya If I could add two more things I forgot: Trickset(s): Street, transition, technical, freestyle, old school, unrealistic German mode (off-hand behind the back)
Travis is still making Waste boards! He's on Instagram :) other people still around include Nick Allen, Garrett Baumann, Remy Banks, Jay Linehan, among others!
Such a great video brother I absolutely love it! Darren langhorst is my all time favorite fingerboarder! Still own my childhood vhs fingers of fury 411 vm! ❤️👌🧙
I have a fairly unique style, my finger stance isn't the "normal" finger placements, meaning rather than using my Index and Middle I've learned to Fingerboard using my Middle and Ring finger. Growing up when I'd pretend my hand were a person, id imagine my thumb as the head, index and pinky as arms, and my ring and middle as the legs. I'm still using only two fingers, just not the same as everyone else. I've gotten hate for it, but I'll never change doing what makes me feel comfortable as a Fingerboarder.
Awesome to learn some more history, crazy to see the things people were doing before techdecks were even in production. Anyone know if these guys like Dennis still fingerboard or do they have Instagram's or something these days
We can learn a lot from old videos. For example, the Fingerskate embryo was very faithful to a skateboard. As you can see from Afrobi and other Fingerskaters, everyone is aware of the line flow.
This was awesome Chris. I'm surprised I had seen all the videos that you showcased, I guess that shows how enduring those videos were, even when I started in 2005. I remember being so inspired by D-Mac, Matt Johnson, but especially Tony Pauthex back then. It's sad we've almost lost access to these videos, I'm happy so you're keeping the flame going.
Thank you, Thom! I'm not surprised you've seen it all since you've been around for a long time :D I should have hit up Remi Gardner, who is back fingerboarding again, to get some clips of him in this video. His style is so unique! th-cam.com/video/y6qKU6SrNRM/w-d-xo.html
Exaggerated tricks have always caught my eye, and always for me, seem to feel the best. It's a demonstration in board control, almost as much as doing them low and realistic is. But it just feels better to me to do them exaggerated
Unreal how much this was me as the narrator, the amount of inspiration I got from Damien, Tony, Darin, and Matt Johnson is insane! And MJ's park was INSANE!! The slick wood, metal coping and metal sheet skirts at the bottom of every ramp! The brick 6 stair with handrail and straight hubba planters! BTW Flying Fingers is online, I would love to see Flying Fingers 2 if anyone has it! th-cam.com/video/Yn7yJsu5JHM/w-d-xo.html
Matt Johnson never released Flying Fingers 2 due to copyright from music - but he does have all the old footage from that as well as the tours in Mexico and Chile with Darin Langhorst, Pat Wells, and Dan Watson!
I can't do untuck finger when playing fingerboard😂 and for nowadays fingerboard scene is too focused on realistic trick, so they dont explore any other trick anymore

Your videos are so great, my man. Finally somebody talks about all this important stuff. Not just tricks. 🔥👍
Glad you like them, Chris :D I actually talk about you in multiple videos!
Hope you are doing well!

Really cool to see these old clips. I'm impressed by how good they were back then, especially with the boards they were using.
Yeah - me too!
what a cool piece of history, thanks for putting this together man! so interesting to see. You doing the nollie/switch heels so early on is insane
Thanks a lot for doing all of these historical videos. I'm in awe everytime I watch them.
Awesome video! Definitely do more history of fingerboarding!!
this is such a cool idea for a video. Loved it CD
Glad you liked it!!
Great video Chris, so interesting. I found a few new videos of Remi Gardiner fingerboarding. His style is still pristine after all these years.
Yea! He's about to launch his updated Hell's Nails fingerboards. I'm definitely going to buy a few!
man the OG double rail TD stairset
Loving these vids Chris! Keep it up!
Thank you, Sid! I'll see if I can maintain the tempo 😅😂
I just found this channel and the content is 🙌 Great job!!
Thank you for letting me know 😁
I learn from Matt. I watch he's videos every day. Furthermore, I did solo fingerboarding for 20 years and Still doing it, but now with a community :).
This is gold! Excellent job on your videos

Super good and informative video! The pressure flipping that denis stimac did was actually pretty interesting

Great video as always. I love the detailed analysis on each person's style. I think I would just break it down to the different characteristics, some of which you highlighted:
Tucked/untucked/semi-tucked
Flat/tipped fingers
Realistic/exaggerated heights
Realistic/pressure/unrealistic tricks
Realistic pop/scoop pop (board over hand)/sticky finger pop
Simple/technical tricks/combos
Perhaps there are also other aspects on how clean tricks are landed:
caught high in air/caught above ground/bounced
fingertip landing/knuckle landing
landing over both sets of bolts/landing parallel fingers like riding skis
flow during and between tricks (no awkward stops or rolling backwards when landing in a grind or between tricks)
Rotating tricks fully to a multiple of 180, except over hips
Anyway, it's a great take on fingerboard styles with excellent highlighted examples. Would be interested to see other parts of this series.
Thank you, great breakdown of all the different characteristics that are present in fingerboarding styles!

I love that! Sorry to hear some people hated your finger placement, but I think it's awesome. Keep doing what you like!!
I want to see some modern day fingerboard styles
Definitely - there's such a variance in styles out there now!
I appreciate this
I got my vhs copy of flying fingers still ♥️
Wish I still had mine! I'd make a digital copy

Bro the little park at 12:35... What was that? The brick and stairs... Looked like cardboard
Matt Johnson is the one in those clips! I'm assuming it's cardboard, but I'll reach out to him and confirm ☺️
Exaggerated tricks have always caught my eye, and always for me, seem to feel the best. It's a demonstration in board control, almost as much as doing them low and realistic is. But it just feels better to me to do them exaggerated
finger boarding looks best with pants
the bowl is the best feature
The obstacles that Damien & Tony use both look so familiar, I must have seen those videos back then.
