On the next episode of WatchJRGo: We drag race my lawn mower against Hoovie's Countach. Let's just say the spark plugs weren't the only things that got gapped!
My grandpa had a yellow deck one when I was younger that I cut his grass with many times. Today, that some mower ended up at my house after I got it back running. Hoping to have it for a long time!
I bought my STX38 yellow deck back in the late 90's at an estate sale. I thought it was a temporary mower until I could afford a new one. That little mower mowed so nice and so easy to work on that I just kept it. The 12.5 engine is bullet proof. Sadly, the spline on the pully on top of the axle stripped a few years back. I bought a cub cadet to replace it. Even with a 25 HP engine and a 50 inch deck I miss my STX38. I finally ordered that pully and will treat it as a winter project. Can not wait to have it back.
I worked for a John Deere dealership for over 15 years as a maintenance mechanic. I worked on the Motorsports edition. The Yellow deck was welded and the black one was stamped. I don't think the black deck had the gauge wheels on it. There should be spring that holds up the gear shifter when it is int neutral. Some of the newer models had a ground wire issue. The ground wire was connected to one of the engine mounting bolts. We used to put an external star washer between the frame and the ground wire. They also had a black plastic hold down cover for the battery. That cover was held down with 2 springs.
There's something to be said about the Serenity you can achieve when mowing on your rider. With all the things in his mind for his business and the work being put in the new shop, taking the time to zone out while mowing can save a life.
I remember my grandmother use to make us mad when we were young. She lived out in the country and had a riding mower and wouldn't let us use it to cut her big ass yard and field. She made us use the push mowers and it would take us all day to cut her yard. We would travel 2 1/2 hours to visit our grandmother and as soon as we arrived she put us to work. Lol
Sounds like your grandmother and mine were sisters. She would also cook us a 7 course meal for lunch and get offended if we didn't eat seconds. Good times.
This channel is great! One day you're working on a twin turbo Audi R8, the next a John Deere riding mower. Tomorrow will probably be a slightly used NASA lunar rover. Keep up the great work.
I bought my STX38 in 2001 for $400, when it was 10 years old. It still faithfully mows my lawn. I've treated it to 2 starters, 20 oil changes, 10 oil filters, 5 spark plugs (Champion RC12YC), 5 batteries, 4 front tires, 2 rear ties, a coil pickup, a seat, 2 replacement bags for the bagger attachment, and two changes of belts, in the last 20 years. It's got around 1000 hours on the it, and I'm still running the original Kohler 12.5. It's got some blow-by, of course. When you re-fitted the hood, you didn't show using a hook tool to re-attach the springs. If you don't re-attach the springs, the hood will fall off the first time you go down hill or hit a bump. Unbroken hoods on these are few and far between, and command ridiculous prices. You'll want to drop your deck periodically and clean off grass that ends up on top of it. It'll foul the belts otherwise. You didn't show it, probably because you didn't know it's there, but there is a spring loaded belt tension release on the right side of the top of the deck. If you hit something, you'll hear a thud and the blades will stop spinning. Drop the deck to re-engage the spring loaded lever to put the belt tension back.
My dad bought a JD 160 lawn mower back in 84 or 85 I think. I think I put tens of thousands of miles on it cutting their grass, neighbors grass, etc. Then a few years later we bought a snow thrower for it. One particular storm it was heavy wet snow and I blew the bearing right out the side. Overall it's been a killer lawnmower. Beat the living hell out of it and it's still running to this day at my sisters house.
Just need to chrome the wheels, fit a spoiler for downforce, put downwards facing LED stripes on and set up a sound system with a boombox to really impress your friends. 😅
JR. have you ask your local Fire department when they retire some of their hoses. if you might get some for your truck. since they are for decoration mostly.
man i love this channel. you buy anything. i just was recently gifted a 1995 JD LX178 with the liquid cooled engine. was sitting in a field since the early 2000s so it has a lot of work that needs to be done, but the engine turns over. i'm planning to do a full restoration to make it look as factory/brand new as possible!
Nice! My neighbor is moving and gave me his yellow deck STX 38. Mine practically looks brand new. Only issue is a vapor lock issue when the mower has been running for a half hour.
I have the exact same mower. You can avoid the oil filter mess by removing the two square 1/8 NPT plugs in the filter housing and running pipe out past the edge of the frame. There are several air filters on eBay.
Mower Tip 1; Do yourself a favor and put an inline isolation valve up stream of the fuel filter. These Tractors have a tendency of gravity dumping all the fuel out of the tank into the oil crankcase and piston chambers when the carburetor float-needle and seat fails open when you store the tractor after cutting. Nothing like attempting to start the tractor with liquid fuel in the piston chamber/s (Chambers if it's a twin motor). This happened to me three times, before installing the fuel isolation valve. I now have a very good habit on checking the oil dip stick before starting the tractor and turning the fuel valve ON before cutting the lawn and OFF again before storing it until the next time. Another plus, with this fuel valve CLOSED and running the engine carb out of fuel, you don't have to drain the fuel tank and its a good time to change the fuel filter. Just put in some fuel additive for winter if you like. Mower Tip 2; The heads are made of soft Aluminum, so don't over tighten the Spark Plug. Been there, done it... You'll hear the piston head hit the plug tip, if you do. Tip 3; Have allergies? Wear a dust mask helps when cutting grass.
My brother had one that came with his house. 5 acres and we did FAR more with that thing before he upgraded than what's recommended. It was a champ though.
Check bolts that hold motor down on bottom side. They tend to work loose which can cause issues with exhaust pipe. I found out hard the hard way. If you turn the front tires you can slip a smaller oil pan in that space to catch the oil.
I had one of these. In it's first two years of life, it went back to the dealer 8 or 9 times for various things. After that, she was wailed on for 19 years total. She was always underpowered for my needs, but she tried her best to do the work required. When the teething problems were out of the way originally, she really only required oil and filter changes and the odd starter motor every couple years. That last year I owned it, it was apparent that she needed more work that what she was worth. I hooked the old girl up and drug her up to the road with my old IH Cub and stuck a free sign on her. I suspect she's probably still out there.
We have a diesel John Deere 455 lawn tractor that came with the house. Has had a lot of problems and has to be repaired frequently, but it does the job on the large lawn. Has headlights that allow mowing in the evening when its cooler.
That same engine we have on our LT160 & still runs like new w just about 1000hrs on it: They used that same engine for like 10yrs. Yeah the plastic hoods do suck, if that one breaks just get a JD130, 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, & or 185 hood. Also be aware that since it’s a light weight standard transmission mower that it’ll want to flip over if you get on a hill, the earlier GTs w 4 spd transmissions didnt do it, but this one would do it.
Dad has a similar vintage Deere mower, looks almost like this one but just a wee bit bigger/beefier. Same shifter but the deck goes up/down with a big old lever that sticks up past the hood that you pull. I think he bought it in 1987 or 88 when they bought the house, still runs/operates like a new mower. Although he started push mowing the front yard(like 1/2 an acre lol) like 20 years ago for the exercise and cause the stripes look much prettier.
Now, the enamel coating is fun however for the non-mower folks out there keeping a decent mower/lawn tractor cleaned and some regular wax or sealant and UV protectant on the steering wheel, seat and tires is protecting what's now a pretty good investment if you have a John Deere, Husquvarna, Cub Cadet or other nicer equipment.
