The idea of feeling unready to truly live life hits home.
Here's my journal entry from a few weeks ago:
"i feel like i'm stuck in a permanent state of temporary.
i keep telling myself: these people are temporary. this job is temporary. i'll aim higher.
but... i have no deadlines. it's permanently temporary."

    • @addisonsmith9688
      @addisonsmith9688 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

That's a bleak but accurate description of life itself. *Permanently temporary.*
      Don't feel bad.
Try to find a lifelong career that feels rewarding enough to allow you to want to wake up every morning and do it.
      Set some goals for yourself.
Like Jordan Peterson teaches, start with the small and work up to the grand. Clean your room, then your house, then your community.. then run for Congress if you've gotten that far

Sounds like you don't like your job. Have you tried Jordan Petersons Self Authoring Program? It helps SO much! It's only about $10. It brings you thru a series of questions about your past, present & future to help you set achievable goals, which can change over time, as needed.

On the topic in the 20 minute window - if the general guidance is that you should put away 15% of your income for retirement, why shouldn't that apply to your personal time? If you can put 15% of your income aside for future you, then you can put aside 15% of your current time for future you's happiness. That ends up being 3.5 hours a day. Find away to enrich your personal human savings rather than just your investment accounts.

I wish you the best in getting through this bottleneck. Please remember that it's just a narrow passage to squeeze through all the big potential bursting out of you right now. It's a snug fit in the process, but out the other side a big world awaits to receive what you have to offer.
If you're open to some unsolicited advice...perhaps finding friends, mentors and even proteges of different ages would provide you with some space to unfurl and sort out more of who you are as you push through these growing pains.
Whatever you do, press on. You've got this 💪😊🙌

26:10 knowing when to pull back & when to push on can be hard, made even harder when you’re constantly on social media absorbing the ideology of grind culture.
I’ve curated my feed so more stuff about self-care & my hobbies, and I’ve found that helps me to lean into to my body more, working with its natural seasons / energy levels.
Some days I’ll happily do a 12hr day and others I spend the morning in my garden or cooking, using my hands and letting my mind wander, before doing a few necessary screen based tasks in the afternoon, but with a hard cut off of 5.30pm

I call Shadow sentences 'Implied sentences' because their meaning is implied but not said. I always reply, 'Say what you mean.'
Shadow sentences leave too much to interpretation. People assume you'll understand, but often their words are misunderstood and they feel ignored.

He meant that some people raise the productivity bar very high to feel that they are worthy of being alive. These people tend to increase their efficiency rather than relax and have a quiet time with friends and family because when they do the latter they think they are wasting time and feel the guilt of not being productive (not doing enough).

These small ideas add up to something great.
It's amazing to have you dissect these thoughts and hold them up to your life struggles... Which are very similar to my life struggles... Even though we are quite different people...
It's like constant life hacks, but thought hacks instead.
I think there for I am. I am better and happier because of the practical clarity you bring to these important ideas...
This channel is a safe anchorage from the troubled waters of a turbulent mind. Somewhere to rest and regain strength.
I've only been subscribed to this channel a couple of months, but it's had a profound affect on my happiness and well being.
It's 6am on a Sunday morning and everyone in the house is still asleep. I'm going to spend the day with the family today... Go to the beach maybe... Even though the weather isn't perfect. I may take that fishing rod i bought last year...
Enjoy your weekend man. Thanks for everything!

56:23 💪😊💥 This is why replacing most of our ideas about mental health with a model for mental fitness is likely our best way out of this mire.
Social, emotional, and psychological well-being are dependent on skills, practices, and repetition. But, for all the fitness trainers showing us how to build our bodies up to be strong, healthy, agile, and, dare I say, sexier, there is still a dearth of coaches training the skills to give us these benefits in the less tangible but perhaps more critical aspects of our total being and wellbeing.
Diet = everything we take in (environment, circumstance, company, conversation, media, etc.). In an effort to get fit beyond the physical, we need to mind our total diet, go outside our comfort zone, and change our minute to minute practices (i.e., inner dialog, activity levels, physiology, what we attend to, who we spend time with...).
The company we keep is the mold that shapes our lives and the tint that colors the quality of our altogether too brief experience of life.
    🙏✨️

I usually just listen on Spotify but switched over to TH-cam for this one because I felt it might hit better watching it.
From listening to previous milestone episodes, I know they're always heartfelt and give a great summary of some of the key points from the previous bunch of episodes and how you've internalized them. I'm sure many of us have picked up on the subtle tells that suggest you may be feeling the pressure and are having quite the internal conversation at the moment.
If that is the case, I wanted to try and let you know that, to most of us, it looks like you're doing a cracking job, mate.
Embracing the madness of it all and seeing that the madness is, in fact, a large part of why it's so beautiful. The work you put in to bring us these conversations and insights is truly appreciated. When gratefulness came up in the episode, I couldn't help but think I'm grateful there's a bro out there dedicating his time to this pursuit, so that I can have a reflective internal moment listening to his conversation and applying the wisdom as best I can in my own life. Never really got into posting comments on videos, so this might be a weird one, but sod it, here I am doing the thing, saying hello to the random stranger on the train. Cheers mate, big love, stay strong

I took a transcription of the last portion of this podcast, and threw it into an AI engine and condensed and well, made a Dr Seuss synopsis. Lets hope this pastes in correctly... enjoy!
Number One: Problems will come, they always do,
They won't disappear, not for me, not for you.
Did you think they'd be gone, like a game you've won?
Nope! They'll change their shape, but they'll never be done.
Dealing with them is just part of the deal,
They're not a curse, but part of what's real.
Number Two: The worries you have, oh, they sure seem great,
But in three months' time, they’ll evaporate!
The things you fret now will soon fade away,
Why waste your joy on problems today?
Number Three: Learning's not easy; it comes from the edge,
It’s out on the limb, not under the hedge.
The harder the challenge, the more you will grow,
And look at the wisdom that you’ll come to know!
So thank the tough times, and invite them right in,
They’re helping you strengthen the “you” deep within.
Number Four: Don't take life too seriously, it's all quite absurd!
In a few generations, you’ll be just a word!
So why all the fuss? Just let go, have some fun,
The race will be over before it’s begun!
These four little lessons? They help me, you see,
To let go of the pressure and just let things be.
If no one will care and I won’t recall,
Why not enjoy this life, problems and all?

That one mate went straight deep through my guts!!!
Need to get out EU (CH). Spent so much enregy/time/labor, trying to fit the group I've landed into according to the place our parents are based. (even worse when adoptated from 8000km away)
Been a long path beeing able to cut off useless distraction/people!!
Hence increasing exponentialy my full skills, Having literraly free space to stock them in my head, the ones I would have used instead in my "average life, with average people, doing tones of average things!! Bashing my IQ with even no clue of it!
Would add that moving over average IQ is definitely though time to get through because of the self reconizing u need to believe.
However once you got the illumination in the head. There we go, F1 is lunched !!!
Thanks a lot for what you do!! all the hard work behind the scene!!! Big Man!!
Oh Finding the right people is maybe the hardest thing to understand that u may not find them, they might find you once u find yourself and lunch the train :D

Are we living our lives as a statement - a public declarations of our powers and greatest we are chasing (endlessly)
Or in the image of our joys and happiness within doing the thing. Where the pursuit brings the happiness.
Living with a high degree of dignity/grace, humility, contentment (golden days are now) passion (enthusiasm).
As important as it feels now. Know that with 2-3 generations of our death.
Most of us won't be remembered and most certainly mostly likely not in the way we would want to be if we are (out of our control)
Reconciling the contradictory state of existence.
Our importance and its lack of.
Instead of seeking plaques to point to our absence.
What we the "forever ripples" we can create in our time....?

I think another important thing about culture wars shiny object cycle is that it's an easy money generator, in a similar way that the YT commentary community works. One article/opinion leads to countless hours of content where all you have to basically do is say if you are for or against that, using pretty much the same arguments that you use for every other discussion (woke people, far right are to blame etc.) All of them just use a template of "These (some group of people) ___ are ___(doing something bad)" followed up by "this video is sponsored by... also, check out my...".

"Shadow sentences" is just a rebrand of passive aggression, mate.
Why make up buzzwords for terms that already exist?

Hey Chris, love the show! Here's a further idea you might enjoy relating to the 'shiny object cycle'. It's called a 'familiar surprise'. There's a TedTalk by Derek Thompson where he discusses Raymond Lowery's theory.

"Don't wait for the life you want to come" is a quote that most people should take away from this video. Simply put, you would love to enjoy your life, and I promise, there are people around you that are waiting for you to enjoy your life. Thanks Chris!

@chris, I think another way to look at “shadow sentences” comes from Edward Hall on direct/indirect communication styles, which varies depending on culture. For example, in many East Asian countries, there is a greater desire for harmony and “saving face”, so a lot of requests are made very indirectly. Exactly, because as you note, making a direct request can put one in a vulnerable position, and turning down a direct request can be uncomfortable or embarrassing for both parties. I think there are advantages to more direct and explicit communication, as you note, but it does depend on the culture and context.

Shadow sentences have been glorified by cinema and media making it kinda cool culture to communicate but it doesn't seem so glorious in real life it's just good for reel life
