I've been learning this song and this is an interesting/helpful video in that regard. For the uninitiated, here are a couple of interesting notes: (1) He is playing in open G tuning. Standard guitar tuning is EADGBe, so for open G you detune three strings (resulting in DGDGBd) to create a Gmajor chord without fretting any strings. (2) His guitar is set up with what appears to be a modified Nashville Tuning (aka, "high strung"). This typically means replacing the wound EADG strings with unwound thinner strings, creating lighter and higher voicings of notes and chords. This also produces a 12-string sound when playing along with a guitar that has a typical set up. However, it looks like he kept the wound D-string, which I imagine helps keep the chords from sounding too thin and chime-like. Pretty cool. I've never seen that done before, so I thought I would point it out.
David Hidalgo is a true musical genius. We are very fortunate to have been able to enjoy his considerable song writing and performing skills. We will not likely see the likes of him again anytime soon. "Yo no habla Espanola, pero entendo un poco cito! Muchas Gracis, Senor!!" Sam, Towson, MD
I came across this obscure video by chance just the other day.....by far the most evocative solo live recordings ever. And truth be told.... My favorite song from Los Lobos' first album, and all others since. Amazing to hear the genesis of this timeless song. (btw, they played up here in Big Bear Lake CA last April - 2019 - and the club was PACKED)
I don't even speak Spanish, but I run the Spanish speaking stations through the channel changer just in case I might see David backing someone up, on guitar, bass, accordian, whatever... I've always been glad when I did.
I had never heard of Los Lobos. I was a partner in a music store. We served many stars on a regular basis. One of my all time favorites is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. He came frequently. Once he came in excited and asked if I had heard the new song by Los Lobos. I said I had heard of them but was not familiar with their music. He played "Will the Wolf Survive." I can see him sitting on an amp doing it. I went out before the day was over and got the album. Great band. Viva East LA.

first time ive seen this thanx Great up very few people have the talent this man has every time he gets on stage he proves it no matter who/what/where he is
Dave is easily the coolest of all frogs. Him and his friends from east L.A. and steve berlin from abington pa.I have seen these guys play in front of 45,000 people as well in front of 140 people and the coolest thing is they put the same energy into the small crowd as they do the big ones. Another cool thing is if you happen to cross paths with them they are as everyday as the blue sky. This much talent and absolutely no ego not even a little bit.
I went Garfield but too early 10959 t0 see Los lobos left e.l.a. in 1960 I was in era of cha cha mambo Tons of bands ,musians Bobby rey Marcos Bobby Montez Manny Lopez then these guys came along and blew everybody away&their still around
A beautiful version of a classic song. Going to see Los Lobos next week. Like Dirk I'm really curious as to what the guitar tuning is on this song? Anyone know?
That looks like an eight (?) string guitar, perhaps with the bottom six in conventional tuning with two drone strings on top for David to use as he sees fit. Anyone else notice the eight tuning pegs on the stock?
David calls this guitar a Hidalguera. Quote by David from Vintage Guitar Magazine: "I gave Candelas an old Alvarez concert-size guitar I had, with the idea of putting mandolin tuners on it. I tried different tunings, but most of the time it's like the top four strings of a guitar, like Nashville tuning: the G strings are octaves; the D is an octave up; and the top two strings are unisons. It's like a double tenor guitar. I put one together with nylon strings, too." Candelas Guitars is in LA.
trademark song. masterpeace. seems like open g tuning. at first this song reminded me of early traffic but los lobos is quite a fine band also. give thanks. meanwhile ariel massacre of wolves is still happening. amazing how a few ass holes can ruin it for the rest of us palin paleface
David playing solo is something I'd love to see.
One of the greatest musicians of my generation.

David Hidalgo is the absolute best. Voice from heaven, great songwriter, and an absolute shredder.

Didn’t know who David was until the Mayans theme song. He is awesome and deserves more recognition for sure
Come check out Dave with our group Los Cenzontles at Yoshis on Nov. 12.
