I have really good luck with the product called Barkeepers Friend. It comes in a spray, foam, and powder. I find that the foam works the best. I also tumble off the host rock and then keep the copper shiny with the barkeepers friend. It really shines up the copper 👍
Well, that was cool. It's always fun to see what Sam and Rob are up to in the shop. I have to admit though, that I missed your usual closeups at the end.
I have a copper bottom stainless steel cooking pot. To get the oxidation off the copper when I’m out of copper cleaner, I use ketchup mixed with table salt. It works pretty well well. Just rub it around with a cloth and rinse.
Great experiment! I’ve tumbled many that my girls found, suspecting they wouldn’t do well, but they were so pleased their collecting added to the batch. Gotta keep them interested in experimenting.
Everytime I watch one of your videos, I find a rock I just have to have and hold for myself....Great video, thanks for sharing! of to strike copper.......
Very cool! And if you don't like how the copper comes out, you can always take it to the salvage yard as copper commands a fairly high price. Mind you, it is per pound. Ignore everything I just said.😂 Great job guys!
Great to see the follow up on your copper rock hunt. I wish you could have done some close ups on the finished rocks so we could have a better look at them:(
I know. I'm sorry about that. I could have included the thumbnail picture in the video. Sam was leaving for college the next day, so we kind of rushed the end.
@MichiganRocks, I only have a couple of pieces. I have malachite and chalcopyrite in my collection, but those will likely shrink over time. Malachite and chalcopyrite gives off toxic fumes if I tumble them. I have read somewhere that those will cause some breathing problems. But sometime in the future, I will try tumbling copper.
Maybe. It just takes so much storage space. I keep all my old footage in case I need something in a future video. I have been thinking of doing 4k though.
I have always wondered if we could tumble! My son collected a lot of "copper rocks" that I never had the heart to toss from tailing piles. 12 yrs later, I might try tumbling them!
Not positive but this is first episode you didn't wear a Michigan shirt in every scene. Wonder what would happen if you put acid in tumbler in stage 1?
No, I have worn other shirts in quite a few videos. I just ran through this video quickly to see what I was wearing. The two that you might be referring to were actually still Michigan shirts, in a way. One had 4 out of 5 Great Lakes choosing Michigan, and the other was a Wally Pleasant shirt. Neither are University of Michigan shirts, but Wally played music around Michigan State University where my sister went to school. I saw him live, hosting open mic night once. He has some really funny songs. I just looked him up and it sounds like he's still writing fun little songs. This one is about northern Michigan, so it seems appropriate to link to it. facebook.com/share/v/gqugGdV5gtauUSAS/
@@MichiganRocks Yes, I was referring to the Wally shirt. Nice tune about being north of Claire. You should send him a Michigan Rocks shirt, so he can promote your channel on his.
Im pretty confident to say, that we as the viewers who appreciate the process, thank you for checking out possibilities.
Thanks, fellas.
You're welcome, Dustin.

Thanks for the tip, Molly.
Super down for these experimental vids!
My cab wheel is on the way as of yesterday. Kingsley 6” nova. Expect vids coming soon boys!
Woo-hoo! You're going to have a lot of fun with that.

Yes, I messed up there. Sorry.
@@MichiganRocks That's okay!
Really interesting again, you’ve got so many great rock types over your way. Hope Sam has a great time in college, all the best!
So far he seems to like it.
I think they turned out nice!
Never would have thought about tumbling metal. Cool experiment.

Interesting. I wonder if it's more the ketchup or the salt. Ketchup would be slightly acidic, so I'm guessing that's the more active ingredient.
Tabasco sauce cleans old copper shiny new. I used to put a drop on an old penny let it sit a minute and wipe off. Works like magic.
@@sheilamarie1481 Interesting. I think it does that to my tongue too.
Beautiful! Thanks for the fun!

Experimenting is fun. I always learn something.
They look great in my(non existing) knowledge 😁😍
Thx for the video ❤️👋🇫🇮
Thanks for the video. They turned out very nice It good to see the end product. Nice work Rob and Sam.
Thanks, John.

Thanks interesting.
Always a pleasure,
happy to drop by
Thanks for taking us along! That was a good experiment.
Cool tests :)
Lovely video - thanks!
Very Interesting!! I keep learning from you and now your Buddy also! Great Video!!! I hope you all are having a Wonderful Weekend!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
So far, so good!
I was surprised at the results. Great video. Hello From Kalamazoo.
Nice town, Kzoo.
Been some years, but still remember.
Good or bad surprised?
@@MichiganRocks Good!!!
Very interesting sharing dear friend. 5:13
Never thought about tumbling Copper, I guess it is because I don't have access to it. Fun.
I have had some copper ore in the basement for years and never tumbled any until now.
Those turned out neat. Not what I was expecting. Thanks for sharing?
I wasn't disappointed. We still didn't get the color we were after, but the shine was good.
They turned out pretty nice.
Thanks, Jeff.

I can tell you that Sam won't be doing that.

Jax chemicals makes a cleaner for copper. I use their patina treatments for the opposite effect.
I can't really experiment with this anymore. I think Sam took it to college.
Well, like cleaning the bottom of a copper bottomed pan, would adding a little vinegar and salt brighten them up?
That's a great question!
Maybe, Sam has these at college. Maybe he'll read this and give it a try.
Interesting experiment. Just wondering, did the slurry have a pinkish tone to it ? As machining goes copper is a very chewy metal.
I really don't remember. Nothing that made much of an impression, I guess.
I enjoy your experiments. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I never tumbled copper before. I'm not gonna try once because it is on scale 3 of mineral hardness.
You're not going to try even after seeing our decent results?

Give it a try. If you read through the comments on this video, there are a lot of ideas about how to make them shine a little better.
🙋♀️❤️
Tumbled a bunch of mine rock from Keweenaw few weeks back coolest were the quartz and copper included one left copper “tumors”
That sounds as cool as a tumor can sound.

@@powerlinekid4296 That's not a bad idea.
What if you did a final polish on it with the polish disc? Think that would get it to shine?
Maybe, but Sam left for college right after making the end of this video so we didn't get a chance to try anything else.
My friend tumbles copper ore in a cement mixer
He must have more than we did.
