No amount of balance was going to fix it. Ya know why? Asymmetric multiplayer. Take all the usual gripes about balance etc. and realize that it's now on a knife edge so sharp it might as well be molecular. Human team is actually half decent and tracks the monster down and does significant health damage stage one? "Monster sucks hunters OP" Monster actually manages to avoid hunters and even manages a cheeky stealth pin here and there? "Hunters suck Monster OP" Watch that violent seesaw happen enough times and it's no surprise evolve's player base sublimated like dry ice.
Gotta say this game was fun even with its problems.. I still remember playing with friends on the day of the servers shut down and being booted mid match! This game was a real gem.
@@aguyontheinternet9095 Yeah man, but they just gave up. I know it’s probably almost impossible to have a perfectly balanced asymmetric multiplayer game. But you can try to make it as balanced as possible. Even games like overwatch are hard to balance, but they didn’t just give and shut down the servers right away. At least, if all the multiplayer plans failed they still have all the back stories, heroes and monsters that they could have created a coop PVE mode of some kind, which really won’t need balance, and made with fun loop or challenges to play with friends. I really love most of characters and their backstory and unique playstyle.
I can totally agree. There was even hints that the hunters would go back to the planet to take it back. You have any good monster ideas they should’ve done?
Wasn't really, this was already a formula of games. The big thing that fucked it was lack of content which even by modern standards, is non existent. Game came out with over $1200 of DLC day 1, and it was literally all palette swaps for things already in the game. Then balance became a serious issue, with 3/4ths of the monster roster being absolutely useless and the other remaining quarter being OP as fuck (I was top 56 Kraken player globally on PS4 and top 45 on PC). You pretty much couldn't lose as the Kraken for example.
2 main issues with evolve were 1: the game was heavily monetized before MTX was normally accepted; basic reskins had cost about 5-10 dollars, there was two season passes; the second one dropped six months after the game dropped (mind you there was no meaningful updates in that span) 2: The game was unbalanced as hell in the beginning also there was only 8 hunters and 3 monsters (which you had to do levels with a hunter/monster before you could unlock the next or you could pay. but you would only ever play wraith as a monster because it was dumb OP Decoy did full dmg and you didnt know which one was which. Maggie the hunter was the most useful out of all the hunters because her dog constantly tracked the monster no matter what. overall game was good just the monetization and balance killed it as they didnt update alot of it till the player base already split.
Pretty much. I refused to get the game when it launched as it was so heavily monetized. Got it when it went f2p. I loved the game. Had trouble getting a match going due to low pop and balanced was still kinda screwed. But the concept was great, the level design was awesome.
I remember the skin issues. I think that with how the game was mishandled really (especially for this genre) hurt it in the long run. I can understand to trying to make money but if you do try that at least have daily updates and constant flow of content. I never got to play the other monsters such as behemoth or gorgon.
real sad thing is there's interviews with the devs where they said they saw the exploits and balance issues quickly as they were discovered, could fix them within hours or days in the studio...and then couldn't put out a patch rapidly because 2K.
it was just a 60 dollar game with mtx. shouldve been f2p. or they couldve made a single player, and focused more on story and some multiplayer. instead, they did multi player online + 60 dollars + mtx. 2015-2016 MTX was accepted. MTX was accepted in mass in 2011-2013~.

Absolutely loved this game. Being able to play a 4v1 as a Monster vs 4 Hunters was such an adrenaline rush; and having friends made it a wild ride. The Maps were beautiful and really set the stage/environment for the setting of the game. Each of the Monsters and Hunters, while some needed balancing over others, had a clear "Skill Ceiling". As a Monster, you knew which Hunter was a threat based off how well they played, and vice versa. Some of my fondest memories would be engaging in guerilla warfare as the Goliath to chip and scatter them, then run off and sneak away; running away, leaving Tracks heading in a direction, then changing into a sneak to hide on a rock over their heads, making them think you leap from the cliff; or using the Hunter that had a Harpoon, so when the Monsters wanted to turn tail, you tossed a Dome down while reeling them back inside a forced fight. when i first saw this game i was immediately got captrured by it but my pc was not good enough then years pass and i remembered the game only to see its removed from the steam...
Yeah. Seems like for a lot of people it kinda disappeared out of nowhere. Just getting back on to not see anymore feels like a punch in the guy in its own right.
I really wish this gamed stayed afloat, it came out when i was too young to buy my own games but now that i can it's been a game on my list. so sad to see it go
Definitely a head of its time. If they released it now with proximity chat (like lethal company), god tier graphics, mods/ai, it would be one fucking hell of a game
An epic bomb of a game. DLC was announced before we'd seen more than the first preview image, more effort was put into monetisation than development, the balance was a JOKE, completely killing any long-term gameplay prospects. You could even highlight Evolve as Patient Zero for the plague of overhyped, undercooked, over-monetised "live service" bullshit that would drag the entire "triple-AEYYY" games industry down into the mud over the last few years.
I've never be able to play this game because I have a toaster for computer, but before I didnt even have a computer, the only way to "play" the game was seeing gameplays, and I loved this game, and I will never gonna play it. Sad.😢
I liked evolve. The problem was balancing a 1v4 game at the time. If the game came out after the pandemic or just before it would’ve had more time to get feedback and learn to balance the game. Rip evolve
I never got to play the game myself. By the time i was ready to jump in, the game died, pulled a phoenix, then was prepping to die again. I do collect funko pop figures though, and to my utter surprise, this game got a full set of figures to go along with it. I found the Trapper "Maggie" in a local antique store for only $3! Fourth cheapest figure i've acquired; no regrets! (they also had a goliath for ~30 or so, but i left it there. It sold to someone eventually,,,)
It was a very fun game for a minute. Never reached a great critical mass of players to ensure it would last for very long and the pay to win upgrades were BS and VERY expensive.
this game came out a lot ago, but i remember it well, i remeber asking my mom if i could play it, she told me that no..because we didnt have an xbox one and we really didnt have the money..but i remember seeing so much videos , feeling happy for each new monster, this game was not a lifechanging experience, but is a good memory, most of the mosters i create and draw have been isnpired in the desing of the evolve monsters, because everyone can admit they were really cool, is sad that it didnt turn out to be such a good game, and that it died, but someday i will be a game developer (hopefully) so i will make a game that leans from the errors of this game to make a better one to honor it, is not a promise..but i will try , it might be a little bit childish or naive but well i will still try you cant stop me , only the futre will tell for now goodbye evolve...it was good while it lasted
Loved the game so much, i have over 1k playhour on it. It was amazing but balancing and crying hunter noobs killed the game. Nonsters got so op that even a pro team i was part of had NO chwnce against kraken. That thing was way too op in the end
If you downloaded it for steam and got the updates before it delisted, it still works to an extent with peer-to-peer. Someone will likely patch it someday, but a few people are still playing, much like AvP 2010 before they killed servers. (PS: Who owns the rights to this IP, were they tax written off, and how much do you think it'd be worth?)
I played it once or twice in 2016 and today (5.7.23) I checked it on yt and found your video. Sad to see the game go away but there is nothing to be done really. All the people once played it moved forward. Rip.
Bro this game died TWICE. First time people got sick of the violent seesaw between monsters and hunters getting advantage. Second time was because the only thing that brought it back was the diehard playerbase that still wasn't big enough to actually KEEP IT alive. It had potential, but that's about all it had.
awesome game wish I got to play it but I was too young and had no cash, unfortunately games like this and lawbreakers are super cool but there are just too many games and so much content especially right now with all the 60+ hour games coming out really good games are gonna die without any real noise to them.
I can fully make this game a masterpiece if i had control. I have the exact fixes it needs to be an extreme extreme hit. And they are free to anyone willing to do it.
it shutted down in 2018 randomly came back online with a coming soon for new updates which never came and devs had plans to realease stage 2 on console b4 they got gutted by 2k the barely any updates was all on 2 limiting how much they can update the game theyd have an bug fix done in a day and couldnt hotfix it till 2 weeks later cuz of 2k
I absolutely love this game but it was repetitive to the point of exhaustion with no new content, maybe if they included different game modes and more monsters had a Godzilla monsterverse crossover or something it could have survived. Even games like Dead by Daylight are repetitive in the same sense but they keep adding new characters
Evolve was great, but it just suffered from much the same issue that Back 4 Blood did. There just wasnt enough content to carry the game at launch, and while the game got to a decent state by the end, it just was too late by then.
Evolved was the only one that was Made up On its own design and didnt make it look like any other game because of that its fun nowadays all games are the same of eachother which makes them overall boring even if you play a new one we need more games like Evolved nowadays
2K owns all the rights and is thinking about how in 10-30 years, "Evolve" will be worth billions when Evolve 2 becomes a global masterpiece. No other developer or publisher is willing to buy the rights to make the game for nearly that investment cost. So nothing happens.
Evolve stage 2 was where I was hoping the devs would work and continue this game series, I had my hopes to high. RIP Kraken my favorite monster and RIP Abe my favorite hunter.
Was it really downed because of Turtle Rock Studio dev team OR the publisher 2K ? 2K forced the devs to make the game have Day 0 DLC, paid DLC characters and paywalled map and mode content. Am pretty sure if 2K wasnt the publisher none of these greedy corporate choices wouldve been made and the game wouldve been a total success. The game ran flawless nearly bugless on day one, with that alone you should build these devs a monument because there just isnt any Early Access game ever launch this smooth almost bugfree incredibly immersive gameplay. Add to that the unique genre of player or AI controlled single monster that gets hunted by a team of players. The idea (not well executed) of a dangerous world that would eat you alive and would go hand in hand on the monsters advantage was also another root for potential. Graphics? Dont need to say anything just look at the footage of all the beautiful detailed maps and characters. On the dev side just needed to make the world more dangerous than it was and some rebalance of the classes.
Really loved this game! I’m so sad it died. One night many years ago I could not find a match period. Like the whole entire night! I think the biggest problem was too many people didn’t want to play the hunters which would make extremely long queues.
part of that problem is that if a group of friends wanted to play it, they all had to pay 60 dollars. 1 guy can love the game, but its hard to convince 3 friends to buy a 60 dollar game to just "Try out".
TF2 already had working servers but fans made more to be faster and more reliable, also the game can't be downloaded anymore. And a few years before they removed the online options.
@@rusticwarriorck I dont think 10 years later is ripoff. I wasnt aware that theres a prequel to MHW though. I stand by my claim. You honestly think Evolve devs looked at MHW and then said "ah lets look at the previous game" MHW isnt popular enough. I dont believe MH was very popular, I wasnt even aware of its existence. Im turning 45 and played videogames since they was invented, I only had 1 console tho (NES) so Im prolly very wrong. I just never heard of MH. Do you think Evolve would have been developed if MHW didnt exist? I highly doubt it. MHW was/is successful. MH wasnt, at least to the same extent as MHW. Edit: Actually the first game was invented in 1958, Pong'ish game "Tennis for Two". Im not THAT old lol Let me rephrase: Ive played videogames since I was like 8-10 yo. Asteroids, Frogger and Space Invaders. Commodore VIC-20 games. Then 64. NES. PC
Really wish it wasn't made to be just multiplayer. It has so many awesome qualities, but basing the game on ONLY multiplayer is so risky. Like I don't trust strangers to play the game to show its abilities. You can play and multiplayer games and there is so much griefing and just bad playing that can literally make a game AWFUL despite being mechanically great. Leaving it up to the players to basically dictate the quality of the actual game by how they play is a bad idea. And obviously it kills all future sales that you'd have from just being a campaign game with randomized elements for longevity. Game design has so little RNG these days but they underestimate how awesome it can be when done right to increase the length and progression of a game if designed right. My point being that I think a different structure for this game would have seen it be way more successful than it was as just a multiplayer game.
Ah I remember this one. Very unfortunate, had a lot of potential. A prime example of how corporate greed can kill a product. They monetized the living shit out of it and put only very sparse free content in an already expensive game. Plus it was unbalanced as hell when it came out, their play testers must have been drugged. They made so many mistakes, and to top it off they abandoned the game quickly too.
your VO was trash. evolve has been dead for years barely months after release. and they even asked steam to delist a game that costed many people 40$+.
I agree with the devs they were ahead of their time with 4v1 content like dead by day light play style and didn't choose to balance fuck all but chose to nickel and dime everything a person did on their game and that ultimately lead to their death with the small community they had. Sensational has this is, I think you have a great voice to really cover things just do and discover more before you release. Good luck, bud.

I put 500 hours in this game when it first game out it was so fun, its a shame what take2 did to it
That especially hurts since the game BioShock was also made by them.
the two games i miss playing the most, happy wars and evolve. evolve had its drawback sure, but each match was fun even when we lost. just tracking was fun. the different combos of hunters was so unique in the game space. plus whats her face had that big donk :D
Man I miss this game, still hoping someone will pick up something akin to it for development.
I miss Evolve
Will always remember all the great times playing this one with friends in alpha and beta and after
Yall can still play it. Just have to use a simple work around and you can still play with your friends in peer to peer lobbies
If you have friends to play with
I hired that game from Blockbuster. I remember enjoying the game. it was fun.
Great video man
This game was a passion project.
Still play on Xbox until the shutdown on July 6th. If anyone wants to play put up a group post I'll probably see it.
Nice!
when i first saw this game i was immediately got captrured by it but my pc was not good enough then years pass and i remembered the game only to see its removed from the steam...
Yeah. Seems like for a lot of people it kinda disappeared out of nowhere. Just getting back on to not see anymore feels like a punch in the guy in its own right.
@@EP_Vega though the game might not be popular among new people, as i see it, among its own community it was very much liked
I really loved this game. Sad to say goodbye
With all the monetization in games now, a five dollar skin is a deal. Easily one of the best and unique games the past decade
I mean, if this game released now free to play and crossplay I don't doubt this would be huge again.
Not free to play, but maybe if they actually had multiplayer as an option it would be fun again.
I really wish this gamed stayed afloat, it came out when i was too young to buy my own games but now that i can it's been a game on my list. so sad to see it go
Definitely a head of its time. If they released it now with proximity chat (like lethal company), god tier graphics, mods/ai, it would be one fucking hell of a game
but u can still pay it if u activate stem key right?
yes
An epic bomb of a game. DLC was announced before we'd seen more than the first preview image, more effort was put into monetisation than development, the balance was a JOKE, completely killing any long-term gameplay prospects. You could even highlight Evolve as Patient Zero for the plague of overhyped, undercooked, over-monetised "live service" bullshit that would drag the entire "triple-AEYYY" games industry down into the mud over the last few years.
Right the industry should have learned and copied the 4v1 concept that everyone who played loved, not the MTX shit that killed it.
I wish I could play one last time😢
Same!
i always wanted to play this since i was a teen still havnt yet
And you never will, sad it really was something else when you had a couple friends
is there offline mode?@@azzy9293
still fun alone, just weird@@azzy9293
I've never be able to play this game because I have a toaster for computer, but before I didnt even have a computer, the only way to "play" the game was seeing gameplays, and I loved this game, and I will never gonna play it. Sad.😢
It really sucks. I really feel like this game was so ahead of the time. Especially that intro cut scene was lit.
Can you still play it because I getting it on eBay please let me know
I liked evolve.
Man I remember the funky pops. I still go back to this game from time to time. For mainly nostalgia reasons
Are the servers still up?
The game is gone, as in no game and the servers have been shut down for a long time
I always played as trapper, the characters were the coolest and the weapons were too
Epic dog
I liked Evolve couldnt get into it because the community was already far too advanced and I was stomped everytime, sad
It was a tough game but when you got the bois. It was a blast of a time
It was a very fun game for a minute. Never reached a great critical mass of players to ensure it would last for very long and the pay to win upgrades were BS and VERY expensive.
this game came out a lot ago, but i remember it well, i remeber asking my mom if i could play it, she told me that no..because we didnt have an xbox one and we really didnt have the money..but i remember seeing so much videos , feeling happy for each new monster, this game was not a lifechanging experience, but is a good memory, most of the mosters i create and draw have been isnpired in the desing of the evolve monsters, because everyone can admit they were really cool, is sad that it didnt turn out to be such a good game, and that it died, but someday i will be a game developer (hopefully) so i will make a game that leans from the errors of this game to make a better one to honor it, is not a promise..but i will try , it might be a little bit childish or naive but well i will still try you cant stop me , only the futre will tell
for now goodbye evolve...it was good while it lasted
one of the coolest game I have ever played at the time. As you said, they gave up the game too early.
How can Evolve be one of yyour favourite games lol
I just found it so unique and the idea was just awesome and killer, plus was fairly dark at moments based on outcomes of the monster winning.
Great vid but the volume is a bit low
then turn your volume up
I miss this game I played as a Wraith
who can buy this game ?
Loved the game so much, i have over 1k playhour on it. It was amazing but balancing and crying hunter noobs killed the game.
Nonsters got so op that even a pro team i was part of had NO chwnce against kraken. That thing was way too op in the end
I’d have loved to watch more but good lord that audio popping is atrocious.
discord server has a legacy version thats still playable
If you downloaded it for steam and got the updates before it delisted, it still works to an extent with peer-to-peer. Someone will likely patch it someday, but a few people are still playing, much like AvP 2010 before they killed servers.
(PS: Who owns the rights to this IP, were they tax written off, and how much do you think it'd be worth?)
I played it once or twice in 2016 and today (5.7.23) I checked it on yt and found your video. Sad to see the game go away but there is nothing to be done really. All the people once played it moved forward. Rip.
Glad you found the video! It definitely a real case of a game being way to ahead of its time and being mishandled.
Bro this game died TWICE.
First time people got sick of the violent seesaw between monsters and hunters getting advantage.
Second time was because the only thing that brought it back was the diehard playerbase that still wasn't big enough to actually KEEP IT alive.
It had potential, but that's about all it had.
That’s the crazy part. I thought the game was already done but then read an article talking about the official shut down.
awesome game wish I got to play it but I was too young and had no cash, unfortunately games like this and lawbreakers are super cool but there are just too many games and so much content especially right now with all the 60+ hour games coming out really good games are gonna die without any real noise to them.
This game could of been peak, it's sad that it ran straight into the ground.
If the game cooked in the oven for a bit longer we could have gotten a Godzilla and kingkong dlc.
Sadly I never got around to trying this before it died.
same. bought it, pc couldnt run it. also had "8 hours played" due to leaving main menu on with 2 fps. so i couldnt refund it
I can fully make this game a masterpiece if i had control.
The game isnt already unplayable??
Partially. A lot of online functions were removed but could still play the OG if you had disk
This game is so underrated ..maybe if they make it f2p maybe could have revived the game.
They did make it F2P, it didn’t work out
It went to F2P but the damage was done. The heavy monetization, lack of support killed the game
I don't get why the company don't just sell the fucking game title to someone else revive it.
Unfortunately welcome to the company of turtlerock. A company that refuses to die and let others have the chance at making their own.
What if everyone who played this game each just gave someone $100 to buy the game from them to force it to come back???
It’s hard to say honestly, especially with back 4 blood ending in the same situation
After using AI to make essay outlines for the last semester that's a hella AI generated video description lol
lawl!
Wasn’t fan-servers for titanfall 2 made?….we could do the same (quality modding might save it)
TF2 already had working servers but fans made more to be faster and more reliable, also the game can't be downloaded anymore. And a few years before they removed the online options.
Same thing with back 4 blood
Evolve was a pretty good game, wish it would have came out at a different time
Abe sounds like McCree in Overwatch
holy shit that mic
First Battlefront 2 now Evolve, Jesus people waste good things for a living
Y'all dont know evolve like I do.
This was an amazing idea for game, but online multi-player games die with sequels.
Sad to say but totally true
Ah so this is where Monster Hunter World got their inspiration. I knew it wasnt an original idea.
Monster Hunter came out in 2004 in the PlayStation 2 era. evolved ripped it off of Monster Hunter.
It plays fine singleplayer.
It wasn't, it's just that they didn't have enough money i guess.
They made so many mistakes, and to top it off they abandoned the game quickly too.
fix your mic cracking buddy
unplayable? like why? cant one just play vs bots just to have fu or somethign?
whats fun about vsing bots
your VO was trash. evolve has been dead for years barely months after release. and they even asked steam to delist a game that costed many people 40$+.
