To cook ema datsi, a traditional Bhutanese dish, you will need the following ingredients:
- 2-3 fresh green chili peppers (adjust according to your spice preference)
- 200g of cheese (typically Bhutanese yak cheese or any other semi-hard cheese)
- 1 medium-sized onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
Here's how to prepare ema datsi:
1. Start by cutting the chili peppers lengthwise and removing the seeds. Slice them into thin strips.
2. Cut the cheese into small cubes or crumble it into smaller pieces.
3. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onions. Saute until the onions become translucent and slightly caramelized.
4. Add the sliced chili peppers to the pan and continue cooking for a few minutes until they soften.
5. Add the cheese to the pan and stir well to combine with the other ingredients. The cheese will melt and form a thick sauce. If needed, you can add a little water to adjust the consistency.
6. Cook for a few more minutes until the cheese is fully melted and well-incorporated with the chili peppers and onions. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
7. Season with salt according to your taste preference. Be cautious with the salt as some cheeses can be salty already.
8. Once the ema datsi is cooked, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.
Ema datsi is typically served hot with steamed rice, It is a spicy and flavorful dish that is loved by many in Bhutan.
