    My Muramasa is made of 440 stainless steel, it was made during his travels to Taiwan. I picked it up in a local flea market for 40$ in the early 2000s. It demands the blood of watermelons, and two liter water bottles from time to time.

    I'm surprised that you didn't mention one of the most notable facts about the swordmaker Muramasa. That being, the incident of the flowing water and the cherry blossoms. How; when each make of sword was placed into a flow of water, with cherry blossoms added up-stream, Masamune's swords would seemingly rebel against harming the beautiful blossoms, and repel them. Whereas; Muramasa's swords, eager to do harm, would draw the blossoms towards them, cutting them..

      They lived hundreds of years apart. They never met. The story you said is just that: a story invented up as a fictionalized "legend." It's a fun story, but totally historically bunk.

    • @EgaoKage

      The incident of the two swords placed in a water-channel, with the cherry blossom peddles being drawn across the edge of the Muramasa sword, while diverting away from the Masamune sword's edge, is sited in more than one diary. The accounts never stated that Swordsmiths from either school were physically present.

    A thing to note about Sengo Muramasa blades is that most of his blades had the size of a tanto. They were then used either as a tanto or as a naginata.
    The reputation of Muramasa blades comes from many things. One of the things in question is a legend about a simple test.
    Two blades, a Muramasa and a Masamune blades, were tested on a simple (court d’eau). (plantée) in the water, the Muramasa cut everything that came to the blade, from leaf to fish and the air itself. When the Masamune was tested, everything that floated (évitait) the blade.
    The explanation given by the Masamune (partisan) was that the Masamune has beneficial mystical power, and didn’t kill without discrimination, while the Muramasa was only made to kill people, so the test wasn’t viable.
    There is also another version where the Masamune cut everything but the leaf continued it’s path while in the case of the Muramasa the things that were cut packed around the blade.
    Either way, this legend is one of the foundation of the concept of the ‘good’ Katsujinken, that protect with it power, and the ‘evil’ Satsujinken, sometime traduced as demon blade, that provoke it user blood-lust and destroy everything.
    The truth in the end is that the bad reputation of the Muramasa blade has to do with both it’s efficiency, which was real, although sometime exaggerated, and the Tokugawa, who made this reputation both to set up the new warrior philosophy they wanted AND because of personal reason.
    Indeed, it is also a sort of revenge since Muramasa blades where used to kill multiple member of Ieyatsu Tokugawa family, but also was used multiple times again the Shogun himself.
    Tokugawa accidentally bled himself with a Muramasa blade when he was young, qualifying the pain as abnormal and the blade as cursed. Since then he feared the Muramasa blades and the enemies commanders would take them as some sort of luck charm.

    • @ktonirian4274
      @ktonirian4274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the whole samurai thing depend greatly of the period. What you are saying as an introduction is the Edo period samurai only, the blade representing wealth but not having as much symbolic importance before. During the Sengoku, it’s even just a weapon, nothing more!
      As a side note, the whole honor thing is REALLY different than what most people think when they think of honor (this is also true for knight and other similar example). If you want to take one concept that resume the samurai honor during the whole history, it will be loyalty, not the katana.
      While the katana is considered as a mystic object in most of the samurai era, the main weapon of the samurai is the bow before the Sengoku period, during then the bow is replaced by the gun.

    Tokugawa Ieyasu was said to be mortally afraid of Muramasa's blades because several of his kin including his father Matsudiara Hirotada had been killed by them, and there was believed to be a curse placed on all Muramasa blades against the Matsudaira clan to seek their blood in particular.

    Just by people believing it's cursed can make them act according to it. If I have a Muramasa I can accept it as true and use it in something related to the curse, in this case simply killing someone. After I kill someone based on that idea, it will just add more to it's history, making people believe even more that it's actually true, hence repeat.

    Well if they were truly cursed, my question would be concerning the ones that remained, were hidden, and or refitted to avoid detection. The Muramasa. So hungry that when you held the blade just below the surface of running water, every flower petal in the water would be drawn to it and split in half. The Masamune was given the same test, and every petal evaded the blade, thus proving it was a true blade of peace.

  • @andrejara4054
    @andrejara4054 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I do believe the "curse" is actually a psychological influence. The creator had psychologycal instability and probably some kind of pychosis, the rumor of it desiring blood no matter the cost seems like the failed effort of another swordsmith to end the popularity of muramasa swords, the functional perfection of the blade (durability, ductility, sharpness, balance, fit & finish), all led folk to believe it was a cursed sword, a common trouble of the early ages had trouble believing that something was good merely because it was really good, often explaining it trhough curses or blessings.

      @tommboswell6846 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      pf it's the process that makes the swords better. they are different types of steel forge welded to produce different effects. in a sense they evolved for different uses. I am an ameture blacksmith. your superior Ikea knives are cheap reproductions marketed for profit. look into it a bit and you will see the difference. I have a blade I made it sees way more use than any I have bought. it may have a different quality of ore but you misunderstand the uses of alloys. I can tell by your comment how much knowledge you actually possess on the matter. gun barrels are made from different steel than fillet knives because they have a different purpose. the reason Ikea can market their knives is the publics complete lack of understanding this difference. look at the knives chefs prefer you will see they choose the one that best suits their particular uses. again the Japanese knives are held in higher regard than an Ikea forgery

    Can understand how some people might believe that such an ability to imbibe their essence, or a foreign sentience into a masterfully built item of this nature. As many of the Bushido text ascribe immense power and ability to those whom practice the samurai way of life, following the code and content of proper martial living, it would seem death also held much influence to a warrior of any house. Since any of the samurai swords evoked terror if not complete horror of their ability to completely dismember an opponent by an able user, it is little doubt that such a thing had a thirst for blood and hence human life. If they were reputed to be so keen an edge that the merest cut might indeed prove fatal with shock causing death very quickly when rapid blood loss would be encountered. I'm certain these fabled swords are everything the owner's believed they were, as it gave them the power of life and death. Would be very cool to own one, but anyone having it would begin to wonder if the legend were true, and likely take their lives.

And actually the Anbu unit organization are normally the ones to use katana’s but being made specifically to symbolize their group showing power.

    Well.... I make knives. I have a mass produced blade that I tried to finish for a guy. He even sent me a down payment. The only thing I can say is that the blade refused to be finished. Or something/someone refused to let me finish it. I had to send the down payment back. The blade is sitting within sight of my computer now. I just haven't decided how to dispose of it yet. So, yeah, I think blades can be cursed or even blessed.

      If you feel it's bad then you could mail it to the Warren's museum/storage room.

    He must have made this video in a rush, the speed he was speaking and without gasping for breath was impressive.

      Interesting you say that, in Marvel vs Capcom 3 Virgil obtains "the" Muramasa blade as it's represented in Marvel. He cuts down Wolverine and the wound is unhealable by his healing factor, then flies off with an unquenchable thirst for power AND bloodshed.
      Yamato however is noting like Muramasa in nature. Although forged in the demon world, it was forged for Sparda as a symbol of his nobility. No curses that alters the will of the weilder or anything. That was just Virgil's own deranged quest for power because he lacked it to save his mother.

    "I'm not the invincible swordsman, Jūbei,
    I'm not the one praised as a master of espionage, Hanzō,
    I'm not the renowned caster Abe-no-Seimei
    Why, out of all people, I, a swordsmith, was summoned.
    For being unable to foresee that, this is your defeat.
    Once seeking for the ultimate blade.
    A blade of steel cutting no flesh, nor bones and neither life.
    What I seek for is the clearance of resentment.
    The cutting of bonds, fate and destiny.
    That is, to free oneself from Karma.
    Upon one's arrival are countless tools.
    Carved over a thousand blades, forming a pile of swords.
    This is the place where all paths cross.
    This is the place where all desires flow.
    This is the place where all deaths await
    My whole life was for this single swing.
    The heart of the blade is right here!
    Take this, This is my Tsumukari Muramasa!!!"

      How do you think I can afford all the bloody swords and their ornamental stands. Clearly, I have a weapons fetish and live in an area that has a ridiculously high housing price range. It's nice here you can have homemade cakes and badass swords. If I knew you would have been so judgemental I would have never have told you. Pillow talk gets me into so much trouble. Least I could afford to spring for the fancy pants restaurant.

    Loved the video, maybe the battousai earned his name with a muramasa blade and because of its power he put it down, picked up the reverse blade and became the wanderer we all know of? Before this video I hadn’t really thought of his time as the battousai other than the obligatory

      While i do agree that the anime has a very gay overtone, i find it easier to watch than something that throws boobs all over the screen. At least Seraph actually focuses on story and characters instead of fanservice >.
