"Cold Steel Rajah III: Frizbee Knife" by Nutnfancy

  • A solid chunk of a knife, the 5.2 oz CS Rajah III seems to have superior strength. It is a small kukri bladed folding knife that lends itself mostly to tactical blade and EDC roles. The AUS8A kukri blade is hard to sharpen with its curvature but it accelerates the cuts. A ambi, waveable thumb plate and dual pocket clips make this a great leftie knife. It deploys fast and lockups hard with the Demko Tri-Ad lock. Hard hammering here in TNP has shown this lock to be just what it says it is: one that prevent shock transfer to the locking bar. The Grivory handle is slick and somewhat fat. Apply skateboard tape as shown and affix a lanyard to extract the Rajah III quicker from the pocket. Value is excellent at a $55 price point. It would be nice if the SS liners on this one were milled out in future versions but in most other ways the Rajah III hits on all cylinders and it too will grow on you.////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 8.5 out of 10///////////////////////////////Buy it for less from TNPr knife seller www.yourcornerstore.com or www.notjustknives.com, use code nutnfancy to save money there!

    Wife got me one for anniversary this year. LOVE IT!! My EDC and not awkward to carry at all. So easy to catch the wave on the pocket to open.

    I got one for my farmer brother--- he does a lot of outside work with work gloves on and loves how you can open this just by pulling it out of your pocket and catching the latch on your pants.

    I have been carrying this and a 4" ti-lite everyday for about 3 or 4 years and both get heavily abused at work and play and both have held up unbelievably well. Can't say enough about how durable and well performing these two knives are.

    Hanging on my pocket right now. Deploys in less than a second, ridiculously sturdy lock up, and as scary as you can carry in a 3.5" or less state.
    I don't leave home without it!

    This is my standard EDC knife. No issues being to large in pocket. When I am working or need to wear a suit i go with the CRKT Heiho.

    Rajah III is my EDC knife. I chose it for 3 reasons. The strong lock up, the blade shape and the thumb opening feature.

    It all depends on your sharpening system as to how difficult it is to sharpen. Using a Spyderco Sharpmaker, sharpening is a breeze. I use it to sharpen my Rajahs, Spartan, Voyager Vaquero (plain) and many other knives with varying blade shapes. I just don't have time to waste bolting knives into place after removing their thumb studs and doing it the best way. The Sharpmaker is very quick, easy to use and clean, and it's perfect for AUS8 knives. If you have a 154cm or a S30V blade, the Sharpmaker doesn't always live up to its name. Also, it's good for daily maintenance. A few swipes every few days keeps the blade in tip-top shape.

    • @thedefinitive6296
      @thedefinitive6296 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      357Muzzleblast Yeah I've got a lot of kukris and eneps in my collection, so I've done my fair share of sharpening. Most of the time, I just touch them up on a strop because it's easier than trying to completely resharpen them from dullness, but that's true of any blade. The two ways I prefer to sharpen my recurves is either with a ceramic rod or with a Work Sharp belt sharpener. The rod is great because the edge is only ever contacting the rod at one point because it's cylindrical, so dealing with the curve isn't an issue. The Work Sharp is a mini belt grinder with relatively narrow belts and seems to handle recurves just fine. After I stonewashed by Spartan, I needed to put an edge back on it and the Work Sharp did a wicked job. I think it's actually sharper than factory now.

    I dont think its a problem of affording as much as it is how much would they spend on a knife. A knife guy regardless of age and financial status will get what he wants eventually!

  • @kmetvhribih
    @kmetvhribih 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    nice review, as usual. i agree 100%. i just have something to add. the gap between the wave thumb ramp and the spine of the blade is a bit narrower and also shallower than on the ak47 (i have both) and it makes the wave action a bit harder to achieve. i'm thinking about milling the inside of the ramp a bit (maybe even the back of the space on the blade) to make a bit more room to fix the problem. nothing major, just to create a slight angle so it is not parallel to the spine of the blade.

    I love mine!! Recently switched to a spyderco tenacious black edition. The one complaint I had was I was out in the rain one night and I didn't think about anything being wet in my pocket. The next day it was completely speckled in rust. I used my dermal to clean it up and make sure I clean it off if it gets wet. I still do really like it even despite that.

    Hey nutnfancy! As far as finishes are concerned, the new steel upgrade (CTS) for the Rajah series (2 and 3) has a stone wash finish rather than the bead blast! So upgraded steel will come with upgraded rust prevention as well! Might be worth the extra cost. :)

    I keep my Cold Steel Spartan, cousin to these units, as a self defense knife and never use it for any utilitarian purposes, which fortunately, means I've also never had to use it. The factory edge on my Spartan is extremely sharp and I konw if I ever dulled it out, it would be a cold day in a devil's you know what before I would ever be able to put an edge back on that blade as good as it came from the factory.

    Grivory has more than 2x the fiberglass compared to Zytel- it is much stronger and stiffer, and resist denting and scratches better. It feels like FRN (which it is,) but the hardness is closer to G10.

    I guess I misunderstood the video. With Richard providing links to the Chinese copies and saying, "Cut out the middleman and buy straight from the source" I thought he was supporting them, not trying to enlighten manufactures as to the problem. I appreciate your response TD, thanks for clarifying.

  • @zednotzee7
    @zednotzee7 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that US made knives are bound to be more expensive, but being THAT much more expensive is going over the top. I mean, what we are talking about here is a pocket knife ! A mass-produced pocket knife ! Over $200 is a totally ridiculous price for such a thing IMO. Oh, and take a look at the Ontario Marine Raider - made in the USA (at least that's what it says on mine) but still a reasonable price.

    I love mine it originally had a serrated blade and it cut like no knife iv ever had, i cut alot of big rubber hose and it literally cut through it like butter. until it came time to sharpen it, so i made it into a plane edge, and its still super awesome! Would recommend to anyone!

    I'm going to agree with Mutt. AUS8 is a sufficient steel. Especially for this knife. Holds a good edge, reasonably durable and easy to sharpen. Being a steel snob is ok but end result is like comparing cars. Honda gets you there just as we'll as the Accura but for a lot less.

      Hate to be a buzz kill, but this video was posted in February, not a surprise that the code doesn't work anymore. Also, he doesn't give amazon as a recommended seller, because amazon doesn't sell the knives, random companies post the knives on amazon and prices constantly change.

    Love the knife reviews I would like to see your input on the buck omni 12pt. (best one is the fixed blade version cause I don't think you would like the folder cause it has some play in the locking mech. and has rough parts/hot spots on the plastic handle. but the fixed blade has a rubberized handle that is in the shape of a gun handle sorta but really ergonomic and a big leaf shape blade that's designed for hunting but can be used in practical uses cause of the rounded belly shape) hope to C it

  • @mysss29
    @mysss29 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm, the one thing that really kills that knife for me is the huge amount of space between your hand and the beginning of the cutting edge (the pocket clip looks like it could be good or not). Why the heck did they do that? Otherwise it looks pretty darn sweet. I might actually consider one down the line. I LOVE the flat grind. Now, if the AK-47 were a flat grind...then I might already have one. :)

    I would like Nutn to review the SOG Vulcan just to see what he thinks. It seems to be a little known knife. VG10 steel on it. A little heavy for an EDC knife but I love it because I don't mind the weight. It works as a small tactical knife as well.

I have often wondered when a knife lanyard is a good choice v when they just get in the way. I carry an EDC knife for utility. I don't think you understand what i'm talking about or misinterpreted it. I meant having the Integrity to keep the video up.
    We all know it's a stolen design and nobody downplayed that. He told that to us right off the bat and mentioned it several times in the video. He also explained that the people who will buy a ZT aren't going to want to buy a chinese knockoff, too. They wouldn't be losing many sales if any.
    $260 for a folder is a bit silly. That's my opinion however.

    knives produced and knocked off are more often owned by other american companies that can produce a comparable blade at a fraction of the cost and have massive profit margins.
