      When u said that’s his attempt to sound bad, I was like, “Well that’s much better then anything I can do”

    great video! lots of people need to see this including myself because I catch myself playing really sloppy with a lot of gain

      Zachary Riv Thanks. It is a common thing to overlook, as soon as you clear up the mess behind what you're playing it's amazing how much tighter it all sounds.

    Wow that's exactly what I was looking for, the non-clean version sounded exactly like my playing..

    you're a legend i've been playing for years and I have been constantly annoyed by the vibrating of strings that I'm not playing now that I'm into more advanced stuff I will put this to practice too thank you.

    Lol. Your unclean playing was my cleanest playing until I've paid attention to it. Thanks for the video mate.

    A common place I struggle with this is tapping or pull-offs on any string other than top string. My ring finger and pinkie like to strum the higher strings and let them ring out. Does the same rule apply to that with muting the higher strings with the first finger doing the pull-offs?

    • @Mikerisms
      @Mikerisms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Creature Puppet Yeah, muting the higher strings will help sort that out for now. But that's not the answer, the thing to work on would be not clumping your fingers together, keeping them separate so they don't catch those top two strings when pulling off.

    By far your best video. I had to learn this intuitively by myself through years and years of playing. No guitar teacher will teach you this, unless or until you ask. Thanks a lot Mike.

    So honestly, I have been wondering about switching to bass because of smaller hands(small for playing guitar). My reasoning is less strings, less to worry about, plus I wouldn't mind learning it anyway. I would love to see a video of how to compensate for smaller hands in different situations

    • @nonenone2669
      @nonenone2669 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think bass might be more difficult for small hands actually.

      Guitar and bass are actually equally hard. I suggest that you learn playing the instrument that you’re really passionate about. Practice is key to success even if you have small hands.

      get a guitar w a shorter scale length. it will be easier to play with the frets closer together

      If in doubt, Ukulele. Actually a joy to play

      @@nonenone2669 I've got small hands too, with terrible stretch. Either limit what you play a little or somewhat rewrite tabs you see to make it easier. There are ways to increase your stretch a little but nothing will be a miracle cure. Just gotta accept the worst things out there can't be played. That still leaves way too much you can play though.

    I was going to ask if you could do tutorials on how to improve certain things while playing guitar, and this was the one I was gonna ask you about, thanks! Also, what about those "wrist bands" people put at the headstock(?) of the guitar? Isn't that used to avoid the background noise as well?

    any tips on avoiding unwanted harmonics when trying to mute strings? can't seem to avoid it.

    This is tricky to get into muscle memory at times, especially for me tapping in the middle of the neck, not just the high string

    If you are just starting out to learn the guitar should you still be aware of this and try to apply this? I am no beginner anymore, but I wonder if I should have paid attention to this since I knew about it - but I thought I should first get the basics down. I also have seen some tutorials for bloody beginners where it is recommended that you just push the strings with the tip of your finger and never touch any other strings. Still I think I wouldn't struggle as much with this as I do now if I would have paid attention to this from the get go. On the other hand I can't really remember how it feels like to be a bloody beginner and it might be way too much.

    But what if you have stubby as heck hands, like the thumb's too short??

    • @Mikerisms
      @Mikerisms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      jstncn3 Then you'll have to make more use of your picking hand to kill those low strings. There's always a way around it, everyone's hands are different so find what wirks best for you ☺

    A way to practice hi gain stuff you write is to practice in an amp on the clean channel. If You can play it cleanly on the clean channel then you could play on hi gain with more accuracy due to hi gain practice drowning out mistakes.

    Great lesson, but what do you suggest when playing open E pentatonic? Muting with the fretting finger is easy for me in other positions across the neck, but in open E, the strings underneath the one being played always seem to ring a bit.
