    Peter always teaches us much without the noise and pretentiousness that others feel are necessary. His videos are a pleasure to watch--calm, clear, friendly, and informative.

    Thanks for another informative video, Peter. I had much success with a Hustler 4btv for over 14 years. Lots of Dx, too. This past summer I replaced it with a DXCOMMANDER Rapide that also works great in my backyard. In fact I've used all of these antennas except for the loaded EFHW. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos in 2024.

      How many radials? For the 4btv

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is no magic figure. I have had good results with 12 x 3m radials.

    Happy New Year Peter.
    I finished the year having worked 102 countries over 12 months using indoor antennas and 10-50w of power.
    About 1/3 SSB, 1/3 CW and 1/3 FT8/4.
    I also reduced my RX QRN from S7-9 to S0-3.
    There is always a way of operating and getting a signal out there!
    I'm using a fan dipole for 12m/17m/20m in the loft of my bungalow.
    I reduced the electrical noise problems partly by using a proper balun at the feed point and a line isolator at the radio end.

    Would like a full video on the doublet and lengths etc for 80-10m as my gardens only 39ft long by 30ft wide so currently using an 80-10 efhw almost in a loop and a cobweb antenna on the house(thats great)happy new year peter

      Use the 3/8 wavelength I described in Video. That gives around 30m long fir 80-10m

    A while back I used a inverted V, of course we are all told that the included angle should be greater than 90 degrees, in practice even 45 degrees or so does not hinder performance subjectively as much as you might expect. Small gardens and low band operation inevitably creates compromises but it is better to be on the air than not. 73

    The best small antenna I ever had was a vertical loop, knocked the socks off multiband verticals and easy peasy to build.

    I'm happy with my 26ga magnet wire EFHW! It works barefoot power just fine and the licensed XYL and neighbours can't see it even if I point it out to them. It's been up for a couple seasons now and when it ever fails I'll spool off another 20m wire and put up a new one. Edit to add, my most successful antenna is a bit of copper gas line and $10 swap meet vacuum capacitor gamma matched mag loop. People think it's art in the fenced off raised bed garden (to keep curious hands away during tx).

    Another interesting video Peter, i’ve got a linear loaded doublet that i use vertically, it’s about 6m long and works pretty well

    The most funny thing is that the "small garden" is very relative... My "garden" is some 5x2,5 meters. Even worse it's a terrace inside of the few story building so my antenna is surrounded by high brick walls. I use semi vertical configuration of a Buddipole and it allows me to be on the air working all the world but the reception is very feeble😢

    I’m on the ground floor of an apartment complex in America. I have a “garden area“ about the size of a patio maybe a little larger Ive resigned myself that a wolf River coil is my only option, but you seem to have some interesting ideas. I can go up maybe 15 feet and have about another 15 feet or 25 feet total on either side of a mast placed in the center front to rear is about 10 feet. Any thoughts?

    Hi Peter, you forgot to mention the smallest antenna that works well. That's the magnetic loop antenna. I few years ago I built one for HF receive only and was amazed with it's performance. However, I never tried it on transmit due to fear of the colossal voltages across the variable capacitor for tuning the loop to resonance.

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes they are great. But I wanted to feature the simple low cost options that would handle high power.

    Do you have any videos of your musical performances (and those of your XYL)? I’d love to watch one. BTW, I love both your videos and those of Callum _(M0MCX)._
    It’s refreshing to see people who *SELL* ham radio hardware show us hams who can’t really afford some of the expensive antennas how to _DIY!_
