- This is an exercise for practicing barre chord technique (in various positions) and I am using the verse chord progression from the song 'Down To The Waterline' by Dire Straits. I've tried to cover everything you need in the video but, as ever, feel free to comment or DM if there is anything you are unsure of.
The original song is here;
• Down To The Waterline
This song has a long introduction - the first verse begins at around 1:08
There are loads of lead guitar phrases throughout the entire song - this is very common in Mark Knopfler's playing technique - try and focus on the basic background chords for this exercise.
My lesson on the A Minor barre chord shape is here;
• Barre Chords - A Minor...
My lesson on the E Major barre chord shape is here;
• Barre Chords E Major...

The basic exercise I showed you here is the way that I originally learned to play the song using B minor, F# minor, A major (barre chords) and then E major as an open chord (but using the barre chord fingering).
The additional exercises are deigned to improve your skills in substituting open chords / barre chords using the same chord progression. They will also help you memorise the starting notes (root notes) for the chords if you don't already know them.
The second version I am substituting the A major barre chord with an open A major.
The third version I am substituting the open E major with a barre E major (in position 7)
Start as slow as you like and focus on playing the chords cleanly before trying to build up speed to match the song. Use your metronome to help your timing and accuracy.
This exercise reminded me of a guitar teacher I was fortunate to study under many years ago when I was first learning to play guitar. I wish to thank Dave Duxbury from Burnley, Lancashire and, as he is sadly no longer with us, hope that he rests in beautiful peace. Dave was an amazing teacher; he always explained how and why things work, and always challenged me with study pieces that he knew would improve my playing.

Great exercise, Matt! Great job!🎸
Thank you Xavi, your compliment means a lot because I know you are a great player - not just technical - but with feel and emotion too ❤
