Our Mega Star 490 Maico built by Racebase. The chassis is based on the Maico 490 Mega 2 1981 but use's the newer 83-on spider style engine. www.info@racebase.co.uk
I remember my little 76 250 Maico, silver frame white plastics polished alloy tank, with yellow and black decals ,I loved that bike ,it's handling made it punch well above it's weight but of course this brute is in a different league .You would have to be a very special rider to use it's full potential to the max ,and I'm afraid I am not one of them .
Thanks for the action video of a really cool nostalgic bike. Like to see one of it being ridden in a sand pit, with some woop-dee-doos and jumps. Have fun with it, and thanks again for posting.
My roommate owned a Honda/Maico dealership in the 1970's and we rode/raced all the Maico's. The 490 was just too brutal to hold on to for very long on a track, but you owned the hole shot. The 400's and 250's were sweet and the best handling bike in the middle 70's. We headed over to Tubingen West Germany to see how they were built. When you bought a new Maico, you got a 'works' bike, there was no other special race bikes for the sponsored pro's. We rode cz's in the late 60's early 70's but the Maico front forks were much better. Dreamed of these bikes while in the jungle of Vietnam.
That was said in the issue of 1983 Dirt Rider Magazine with the big bore 2 stroke shoot out. It was the best shootout I ever saw to date. There were like 9 bikes pitted against one another.
Are they i had a 1980 YZ400 when i was a kid 16 yrs old and i raced against a Maico 490 they were fast but the Suspension on the Macios were way too bouncy
The watercooled CR500 is superior but it's got at least 4 years development on the 81 Maico 490, for it's time the Maico is superior. The 84 air cooled CR500 is inferior to the 81 Maico.
@paulpischke7446 😆 Ego...what would you have to back up the no knowledge part, I'm genuinely interested? It's a tagline that seems to attract the odd petty comment, nothing more.
That sounds so good. I bet that could be heard for miles the echo makes it sound even more amazing!
What a quality built well cared for machine ! Looks an runs like the day it was made
Gut wrenching brute power...bloody fabulous!.

Nothing sounds as good as the 70’s big bore bikes !!
Killer Maico , nice riding shorts !
That's one way to dig furrows for the taters! 😄
Loved my Maico. Miss it
I can almost smell the Castrol R Bean oil!
I started running 927 in my yard equipment. Oooh that smell...
Memories of bean oil smell at the speedway races
I raced MX in the 70s, man the smell!
we used to say you want to go plant some corn, when we road in fields with my 74 250 maico! back in the day that maico schooled everything....!!!

Hard to beat those two strokes!

A 490 is more than enough power I can't even imagine riding a Maico 700

😎👍
Nothing but fodder for my 1987 CR500R
@SekaCity Dude don't get upset it's just that you were going so slow I though for a minute you were dropping cow manure on your new peanut seedlings
That bike is throwing up dirt 20 ft behind it
It's funny. It sounds like it's about to die any second. It's sounds slow and lame. But it's fast.
Come on… ride that thing like you stole it !
Fly
I had a '75 yamaha 400 mx, God if i only knew at age 20 what i know now
Farmer. B tamping
I love this video however hearing this and seeing this is easy proof that the CR500 is far superior. Super sweet bike though!

Honda studied the maico.the cr is almost a carbon copy of the maico motor
that's not flatout
Pansy....Get it WFO top gear!!! 😒
Ego no knowledge
