He was a young man during the depression of the 1920's, he raised three kids, fed them, clothed them, raised most of the food they had and still worked a full time job. He also provided for his parents and one brother-in-law! He simply had no time to be lazy. Thanks for sharing all your vids. I really enjoy them all.

They got rid of that class a couple of years after graduating.. And replaced it with another computer lab.. It's to bad people don't have these resources in school these days.. They would probably know how to put gas in their machines or even check the oil..

    I've obviously been watching too many machinist's channels (Abom79, etc), because when you got to the bent crankshaft, I was thinking "He's going to have to completely disassemble the motor, put the crankshaft on vee blocks and then check the run out with a dial indicator while using an arbor press to straighten it." Or you could use a sledgehammer. On the other hand, maybe I should have expected this from someone who uses a chainsaw to install a radio. Thanks for all the tips, especially the cable replacement.

    • @the_hate_inside1085
      @the_hate_inside1085 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don´t think he straightens many shafts on an arbor press, he would make a new one on the lathe, machinists love making new shafts.

    • @nekoroms

    • @forthrightnight

      I thought the same thing when I saw the bent shaft.
      I never laughed so hard as Andrew brought out the chainsaw to install the radio. Pure genius. And then the "access panel" on top of the dashboard. I love his total lack of respect for the "proper way" to fix things. Another TH-cam machinist's catch phrase comes to mind when you watch Andrew. "Giterdone". If you watch Abom79 you probably watch Keith Fenner.

    The 357XP Andy owns is a very old saw from Husky. In all likelihood, it was without a doubt, the best FIREWOOD SAW They ever manufactured and sold.
    And man, did it sell. Year in year out. But, the end of an era came for the 357 in 2011. It got replaced with the 562XP.
    Originally i was told by our local Husqvarna dealer that is also the owner of the local Husky Dealer, that Husky was going to produce both saws, But that changed.
    The 357XP Became a legendary firewood saw. So rugged and so damn dependable!! As far as I’m concerned for straight up firewood cutting, this one that Andy owns, was the best firewood chainsaw ever manufactured. Bar none. Hands-down.

      just dont hit rocks or stumps with your mower. thats why the shaft is bent. it can be fixed with a sledge hammer but its sketchy. first of all metal fatigue and hair line cracks are a very real danger. seen so many things crack half way then just fail unexpectedly in some catastrophic rod throwing valve dropping mayhem. the mower could run good for 5 more years then one day throw the blade through the side of the deck and through your ankle so you have that on your mind. again it can happen, it might not. its a gamble also you can just crack the crank case while hitting it with a hammer and the sound of hammer beating motor is just cringy and painful like hitting a puppy and hearing it yelp only not quite as bad. just dont break it in the first place. its easy to avoid as long as you mow your lawn often enough to know whats laying in it

    Great video Andrew. I like to pull the bar up on the chainsaw while I'm tightening the bar and chain so the chain stays tight. Sometimes when the bar is leff down, it will get pushed up from the downward pressure while cutting and loosen the chain. Nice saw by the way...

    I have over 20 years trained experience in outdoor power equipment repair and have my own lawn mower shop, here is some advice from a professional. 1. You never ever weld a blade to any mower, that is very dangerous!! Broken crankshaft bolts can be drilled and tapped and blade adapters can be replaced - they are an important safety feature in the event the user hit's something hard as in a large rock. 2. Straightening crankshafts - most repair shops will not straighten a crankshaft due to the risk that they can snap off and break, usually when a crankshaft get's bent the mower is deemed non-repairable, i have a machine that straightens them and i've had them snap off numerous times, now the hammer method does work if done properly, you need to protect the crankshaft and not hit it directly, usually an old socket or a piece of steel pipe the same diameter as the crankshaft will work, hitting the shaft directly will warp it and make it no longer perfectly round, resulting in vibration and an uneven cut. 3. Always replace a brake cable on a push mower, it is am important safety feature and never tie the cable thru the hole where the Z bend goes on the engine brake, the reason i recommend replacing brake cable's is the engine brake it's self is designed to stop the engine from spinning after grounding out the spark within 6 seconds, using the wrong cable or attempting to repair a cable can hinder that and cause the brake to not fully disengage anf it can also cause other issues. I'm not trying to be negative or criticize the video in anyway- just sharing knowledge and being educational.

    Good job, Andrew. That riding mower brand "Signature" was the now defunct brand of Montgomery Ward Stores, which closed in 2001. Those mowers were actually made by MTD and just had the Montgomery Ward name slapped on them. My mower is an MTD Millenium that I bought new in 2000 and am still using it. I had to put a new used transaxle in it last fall of 2018 as the housing on the old one cracked in half. I got the used transaxle off of eBay for 1/5th the price of a brand new one .... $120 vs. $600, and installed it myself. I am not anywhere as good as you at fixing things, and def not as fast .... it took me about 2 months or so on that repair, but then I did not work on it constantly either. You and I got a lot in common about liking older machines. Besides my old mower, my GMC truck is a 1993 model that I bought brand new and it's the only vehicle I have had since then. My Maytag clothes washer and dryer matched set I bought brand new in 1980 and they are still working like new, but I had to put a new water mixing valve on the washer last year, and a new blower wheel on the gas dryer. I like to say that everything I have is old .... even me! LOL

    I love your videos and your modus operandi of most of us being, "If it's not broke don't fix it!" That mechanics wire & the bent crank as well as welding the blade in place were feats of jury-rigging excellence! In a part of my life long past I've done a lot of what you do and to see your progress from messing with dirt bikes, scooters, jet skis to being a builder, excavator, fabrication of the container castle is what brought me to the channel. I mowed lawns with a reel mower at 7, we moved to Baltimore and I was doing 15° slope for a friend of my mom's for a $20 bill. Shoveling snow, raking leaves, wash cars etc. At a school in a rural area when the city was crazy I saw a greenhouse and wanted to take a class that lead to being in FFA when I told our teacher I'd like to try working on small engines he gave me 4-H manuals & a Tecumseh! I took carpentry in vo-tech two summers of OJT were required so I was mason tender & parge foundations as well as tar each day looking like a coal miner at the end of day. 12 guy's with step-ladders and a 2X4 walking up a step at a time set I-beam in houses even with a local crane guy for not much $! I did houses for a decade with occasionally at road construction with my dad a school teacher who wanted to make some money and stay in shape. I really appreciate your concern for the next guy who's got to deal with the waste rock from the conduit run! We had to put an extra lane on I-695 from Pikesville to Security Blvd & the home of Social Security. They'd put the boulders in the median and we had to get large diamond saws and hammer like on your excavator. I'd got a job doing erection & fabrication to convert a tarpaper line to make shingles at Tamco working to guide a crane operator who had to take voice commands on a walkie talkie. Lots of cutting & burning as well as welding with a gas torch & arc welder all of the cool stuff of today didn't exist! That circular saw that cuts steel plate was like the future! I've got Attention Deficit and the 90 minute video are HARD to stay with, but THIS one had a few segments that if you get tired of sped up grading or welding I'm able to jump to the next is cool and shorts like Wranglerstar might get you more eyes 👀. I'm thinking about trying small engine repair again as doing that by the book is expensive & frustrating. I like Slime too!
