  • In the fifth episode of “Frick Five,” Curator Aimee Ng interviews Emerson Bowyer, Searle Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, Art Institute of Chicago. Emerson answers our five questions, expressing his admiration for the early twentieth-century French sculptor Camille Claudel. “This is, for me, sculpture at its limit, sculpture on the edge.”

Not being able to visit The Frick is very truing, but the three series: Cocktails with a Curator, Travels with a Curator, and Frick Five are helping to fill in the gap. Thank you.

Aimee, thank you so much for this very informative and delightful interview with Emerson Bowyer. I have not heard a conversation I have enjoyed in a long time, and certainly not since the Great Isolation of 2020 began. I love these Curator cocktails and travels with the Frick!

Interesting interview. Not sure I am so crazy about the “Wave,” but to each his/her own. I love Caillbotte though, especially that large painting of Paris on a rainy day. I found it mesmerizing and spent considerable time with it when I was in Chicago.

Love the Frick discussions, but this one made me work hard for the names of the artists under discussion. Lots of googling. Probably learned more, which of course is the goal😊

Bouguereau, over-rated? How daring! Thank god you've helped to stamp that out. I wanted to hear more about Caillebotte, a fav of mine, so interesting, strange perspectives, obviously closeted, often painted men from the rear, incredible close relation with his brother -- the gardens! Too bad you had to talk about your favorite music. "The Wave" looks much influenced by Bouguereau, you're right Aimee.
