Mars isn't the recent obsession that you might think if you listen to Elon Musk and NASA, in fact, NASA had solid plans to go by 1982 using plans drawn up by Werner Von Braun.
In this collaboration with Isaac Arthurs SFIA channel, we look at the Mars missions that were planned for the past and those which are proposed for the future.

It's so crazy how ambitious we used to be for space exploration. The Apollo project was almost 50 years ago, costing almost $144 billion in today's money. We could easily send a Mars mission with that kind of budget today. I really hope we can bring back the space race.

The funny thing about cutting back the space program is the war on drugs ended up being several times more expensive than going to Mars.
Patchuchan , yes. And instead of giving our society a boost like the space program did, the war on drugs has destroyed it.
It's not too late, an international Mars mission would establish government control, preempting a Martian drug war carried on by commercial interests. Sales of Red Dust could take down our culture.

TH-cam was nothing like it is now. It was all cat videos in 2008-2010.
When I was at NASA, I asked Jack Lousma about this mission and he was excited and answered they were targeting 1984 from what I recall. I get the sense the Shuttle program kept them busy at least as test pilots and not as explorers.

When I was a young child in the 1960s my uncle who worked at Johnson Space Center was certain we'd be on Mars by the time I was in college in the early 80s. He was very disappointed when funding was cut for the Mars mission.
In fairness, the space shuttle was always thought by NASA to be a test bed project looking toward a much better design. NASA thought of the space shuttle as an intermediate design. The idea was to use the information gathered from the space shuttle program, to design what would be the first real reusable shuttle that could carry large objects into space, so that future missions could have something readily at hand moving large space ship parts and crew into space. Due to politics and budget cuts, what we wound up with was the Ford Edsel station wagon of space vehicles though.
@@MrSirwolf2001 Yes, all that is too bad, but the shuttle has provided a test bed for long duration living in space. Needed for a mission to Mars and beyond. Some little 5 foot gnome, now running for congress in Az, spent a year there on the ISS and did not die; but his brain has become addled, apparently, cuz he thinks people will vote him in cuz he was a "space man"!! :D

When I was a kid around the time of the Moon landing, the common popular thought was that man would land on Mars around 1984. The movie 2001 reflects popular thinking of the space timeline in those days.

His rank was more a function of his importance than his fervor.
In fact, he was arrested for not being Nazi enough and spent 10 days in jail before high ranking officials intervened and got him out because he was so important to the rocket program. It took 2 to get him out.
So I don't really care what his rank was, the absolute fact is he was a Nazi only because turning down the offer was quite detrimental to the one doing the refusing....... Or detrimental to their family members if they're too important to harm directly.

There was a novel I read called _Voyage_ by Stephen Baxter which goes over an alternate timeline of a Manned Mars mission in the 80s, and one thing that came to mind is that it would take so much effort to get a crew to Mars and back that it would actually be better from a science standpoint to have just sent the many robotic landers we have today. Not only that, but many of the missions to the outer solar system - from the Pioneers and Voyager to orbital spacecraft like Cassini and Juno - either wouldn't have happened or been decades more into the future than they are today.

When you waste the billions that NASA wasted on the space shuttle and you repeat this mistake for three decades, you don't deserve to be entrusted with 4% of the federal budget. Only when NASA starts spending its budget wisely should it receive more money.

No amount of funding can shield you from years of unprotected space and the effects of prolonged low gravity with no medical back ups no atmosphere no water and the dust will kill you . Otherwise the Sahara desert would be thriving with people putting sand into 3d printers and getting all the food and water and shelter they need. And getting a rocket to land and take off on another planet after at least a couple years of micrometeorites and just, you know, rockets are usually launched with thousands of people monitoring stuff and being ready for a quick engineer call etc ( at least 20 min delay if your about to take off and need a quick check on something )otherwise why don't they just take off from anywhere here ..or is there a space port scam going on ! The Apollo astronauts were at their physical limits after only two weeks and needed carrying from the lander. Has anyone ever said its even possible to launch a very large space craft that has landed on dusty uneven surface with no water cooling or debris splash back effects ? How would such a craft ever know the landing site could be safe ? Robots would be so much more fun , could do loads more and when they die we feel aw well done little robot .
@@MyKharli all those obstacles can be overcome with money, radiation: use water to shield you, kepping yourself fit: work out or build a spinning ring shape spacecraft, sure its super complicated but if you have funding everythign is doable.
@@froschreiniger2639 Still got physics to deal with , a water jacket thick enough to protect you during a flare would have so much mass to make the fuel requirements ridiculous . We probably have reached peak doability and if anything we are getting dumber. We haven't even had a self sufficient biosphere on earth and with no signs that I can find that its doable either. We cannot even stay in the Antarctic without being miserable and needing massive inputs constantly to survive at all .

Isaac Arthur is a TH-cam hero. He's personally taught me so much and made me really think about where humanity is headed in the future. Hopefully this will give his channel more exposure.

So instead of great advancements in space travel we had a bunch of wars which only strengthened communism in Asia. Awesome, good job. Recent wars in the Mideast have cost over 2.4 Trillion, or enough for every space mission we could dream of.
Asia is largely Buddhist and does not have a strong military tradition, if they didn't have some encouragement to fight and stick up for themselves they'd be in the same position as South America where governments are manipulated before breakfast. Maybe instead of a Mars mission we could do the same for South America, screw with them until they rise up and form the Union of South America.
There will be a lot more wars in the middle east since its full of fuckwits who can't govern themselves.

Those wars were justified and reduced the spread of communism. The middle east was justifued bc the us didnt want a bunch of warlord wackos controling 85% of the worlds oil. But i somewhat agree with you. The military gets trillions over 10 yrs but cant afford good teachers for our youth and while some of our citizens are starving. I hate war but sometimes its a necessity. Look at the bigger picture. Youll get it. Might not agree with it but youll get it and see why things happened the way they did.

The nuclear rockets proposed for those early Mars mission ideas wouldn't have been more powerful. They would, however, have been much more efficient than chemical rockets. High thrust isn't as important once you're already in space, but high efficiency is

I was fortunate enough to meet von Braun when I was ten....my dad, who was fascinated with space travel, took me to a talk by von Braun in Wichita, and afterwards I met him and shook his hand. Still, after all these years, a remarkable memory. He talked about going to the moon, and amazingly, we did eleven years later.

migkillerphantom it doesn't matter how much money and resources the developed world throws at failed countries in Africa or Asia. With every dollar given what isn't syphoned off by corruption is used to ensure more children are born with their hands out. There is no end to the people who will want something for nothing. Politics fucking up perfectly feasibly and awesome aerospace plans as usual! It's really a shame Von Brauns follow up projects never came to be. Space stations, shuttles, space tugs, nuclear rockets...We could've had it all.

I never fail to find out something amazing every time I watch this channel! I had no idea that NASA was so advanced with plans to visit Mars - or had any plans at all, in fact. What a shame it all is that we stopped at the Moon and never even went back there. But I remember vividly that in the 1970s people actually started losing interest in the Moon missions, and only woke up to them briefly with the accident to Apollo 13. Really sad.

During the Apollo 13 emergency it was widely commented at rhe time that people were rapidly losing interest in the Apollo landings - until there was an accident.

I don't think money is really the "stopper", but politics and what you think is important for your re-election is. During the O'bummer years we spent over a trillion annually, domestically, on about 88 different welfare programs (from food stamps to child school lunches, free housing for the poor, and free medical care and schooling for illegal aliens, etc., etc.) in several government agencies. That same money, or even a fraction of it, could go a long way toward space research and exploration. But NASA was fed on "bread and water", and became moribund as a result, during those same 8 years!! We could not even fly up to our space station w/o hitching a ride!! And here we go again with O'Biden; so don't plan anything "spectacular", or even mundane, from us in the next 8 years,...................unless.................... ;D

The US spends about a $Trillion every two years, yet there are still people who think space exploration is a waste of money.

Imagine the soviets and USA working together in that period after the 2nd world war and into the late 70's all that know how, technology and Money Mars would have been easy pickings! Such a pity politics and pettiness prevented such collaborations!
Gerald Ward to be honest I’m not sure it would have been better. A majority of the achievements of the USA and USSR with their space programs were due to their competition. Competition promotes development and the only reason NASA had the budgeting it did was to outspace the soviets.
This is all I ever think about... Just how much we could do if we just worked together. I guess America should just take over the whole world. Someone needs to run the show or some AI or something to unite us. Maybe a fake alien invasion will bring us all together lol I dont know... It seems so hopeless sometimes...

I'd honestly argue that the advancements would have been even slower.
Without politicis we wouldnt have Nasa being litterally pushed to innovate. Its going to be like with the X-33 Venture star, where the venture star was literally "too hard" for nasa to engineer, and without a real solid push, its now a billion dollar waste in tax payer money.
Thank god for the politics because rn without said pressue no one wants to innovate anything.
I think you'd be surprised at how little of a difference that would've made.
The competition they were part of was a huge reason for the giant leaps they made technologically.
I know it feels all warm and fuzzy to think of everyone in harmony working together...but competition breeds excellence and too many minds working together can cause a lot of gridlock.
I actually think their competition with one another made both of their space programs far better in the long run.
We've been working together almost ever since the last apollo mission and really not much headway has been made in the way of long distance manned missions. Think about that as well.

Its probably a good job we didnt go in the 70s or 80s or 90s, we might have spent a fortune and failed and not gone back for an even longer time. At least now we have the technology and computer base to develop practically any technology we could possibly need for mars. All it takes now is money, the technology will be built.
I wanted to say that it takes a precedent to interest people, but we have moon landings, and those were short lived. So I'm probably wrong.
You don't need fast computers to get to Mars, you need lots of raw rocket power. The most common "technology" mentioned is 100 tons.
Only you need to get to the moon first, lol.
We spent a fortune in gold and precious blood going into orbit and landing on the moon. But not all of our attempts at space travel ended up as planned with our boys returning home safely and yet we persevered until we reached our goal. Back then failure was part of the process and learning curve unlike today.
Lol, they supposedly did go in the 70's. when you say " WE ", who are you? Do you work for NASA? You did nothing apart from watch a footage of them pretending to be on the moon. No more replies about the money. Reserve Bank can print money without being regulated. So I am certain if NASA went to the moon and they could go again, money is not the issue. They have never even left low earth orbit zone. Instead of just trusting company and media lies, do some research otherwise, you are still just a little kid who believes in santa clause.

How much it will cost E.Musk to take Tesla to Mars.

BUT! Sending a Tesla to Mars is waaayy different than sending humans to Mars, and there are way more problems to worry about when sending humans to Mars then sending a car into space. Humans need food, water, power, radiation protection etc, while the Tesla Elon is sending isn't going to much up there rather than take live video and play music for like a week before the electronics start melting.
The Tesla sent by Elon Musk won't even achieve Mars orbit, it will just get passed Mars and that's all. To obviously that "mission" is just a test for Space X to prove they can reach Mars, but to achieve Mars orbit, you need engine and fuel to slow down to be captured by mars and more fuel to land there and take off to get back to Earth, that is much more expansive.
Zanzalur's Odyssey Elon always finds a way.
