CI Mid: Britt Merrick Breakdown

  • Over the past few months, the CI Mid has garnered more buzz than just about any other surfboard in 2020. Ok, maybe the FishBeard actually has, but this Mid is a close second! In this new video, we wanted to share a bit more info and visuals behind the inspiration for this egg-inspired model, as well as added insights on what you can expect from its ride.
"At Channel Islands, everything we do is performance oriented,” explains Lead Shaper and Designer Britt Merrick. "We’re not satisfied with just making boards that go straight and fast. We want speed, flow and glide in that feeling we’re all after-but you've got to be able to do the turns that you want to, and you've got to be able to do your best surfing. So that’s the philosophy that we took into our CI Mid project.”
“One of the cool things we have at CI, having been around for 50 years, is this incredible design library of templates and history, and rockers and all the things that go into making a board,” adds Britt. "In the ’70s, my dad had a board called the Huevo Caliente, which was this really beautiful looking midlength, egg sort of board. We'd been looking at pictures of that around the factory, and felt pretty inspired by that so we dipped back into the archives, and pulled out some of those old templates to accomplish those curves that created the CI Mid. We also updated the bottom so that it performs like a modern board but still has that classic feel and vibe that my dad created so long ago."
The CI Mid is a modern classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and refining egg-inspired designs that are in a category of boards many refer to as midlengths. "I wanted to work on a board that blended all of the different characteristics of these type of boards into one,” explains Howard. “Although the CI Mid was inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins like Al’s mid-1970s Huevo Caliente, it offers an improved crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by his modern rails, rocker and bottom contours that earned him a rep as one of the greatest shapers of all time. ”
Boasting a sleek, egg-like template with low entry rocker and foam a tad forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, gradually accelerated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail. Britt adds: "The CI Mid is a long-railed board that has all that speed and glide you need to draw those high lines and get that flying feeling you’re after, but you can still really turn down the face and up it, and surf the board well."
A reliable all-arounder that flies over the flatter, smaller stuff, the CI Mid shines best in shoulder-high to nearly double overhead point surf-where surfers are able to lay down flowy, arcing turns with total confidence, speed, and control.
The CI Mid’s minimalist logo is also out of the Channel Islands Archives-a lam Al put on his boards in the early ’70s-and all CI Mids are stocked with high quality, colorful resin craftsmanship (6-4oz. decks with 6oz. bottoms).
Fins can make or break any surfboard. For the CI Mid, we again worked closely Devon and our friends at True Ames Fins to custom build a 2 + 1 fin set that enhances our the board's high-performance characteristics, as well as helping it be versatile in a wide range of conditions with just a simple adjustment of the center fin.
    CI Mid Dimensions:

Agreed or “rail to rail surfing” for me. Doesn’t have to be a mid length but these-chop hops and jerky turns that the kids are into doesn’t reflect the type of surfing I like either (how’s that for a run on sentence? I’m leaving it)

@Lou Morda nose riding was around before any of those others. As for arials, I think it’s pretty damn spectacular and impressive. I do like the flowy old school styles the best, but why do people have to cling to one style? Just appreciate it all.

I picked up a 6ʻ8" this morning and rode it this evening in head high, slightly lumpy but lined up rights. First wave had a lot of moguls but the board accelerated through each bump, I was smiling already. It goes fast, snaps, does round turns, holds high lines, cruises through flat spots, and is easy to ride. So fresh and different.

@@surflots1 just threw 2 mick fanning FCS side fins in from my thruster setup. I only did it because I didn't have any other option on the day. The thing went amazing!! Finally rode the True Ames fin setup with the single fin and side bites, and to be honest I didn't like it as much as the twin fin setup in smaller waves, but better in bigger waves. I think twinny setup is better for 4 feet and under, and the single fin for anything bigger.

To be honest it's not entirely about the board, it does help for sure but Devon could surf a sausage if he could find one that would float. It's more about having a longboard mentality of trim and flow when riding longer boards. The clips of the short boarder guys riding them look a bit clunky and forced.

I’d want to ride this in waist high and below wind swell summer slop here in oz. I only see people riding this in waves above waist and reasonable quality of waves. So my question is summer groveller or not? Is this the board to keep me catching those shin high drainer and compete with the longboarders for waves when it’s 30 degrees and I’m dying to get into the water and feel the glide

    • @cisurfboards
      @cisurfboards  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Michael, they do work in small waves, you can grovel on them but they are not designed with that in mind. The biggest challenge is it has a lot of rail to fit into a small pocket. We often recommend something more skate like a Fish or FishBeard or Rocket Wide for those kind of conditions, or a classic longboard. If you look at this video of Devon in the drone footage those are just waist to stomach high but it's drawing off a reef pretty good. Our crew here rides them on small days but just want to be honest that it's best if you get in waist stomach high or bigger, ideally shoulder high plus for it to really hit its paces

I think you mean the takayama Howard special mini. I'd like to hear devon talk about the differences between his signature takayama board and the ci mid. I would imagine that you would ride them in the same kind of waves.

Ross, all of California was doing this, not just here in SB. The original board Al made (Huevo Caliente) was made in 73/4. Eggs were made popular by Skip Frye, much further south in SD, his first was made in 1968. Liddle made hulls that are popular from Bu to Rincon, based off Keyo V Bottoms he saw Nat Young ride in 67/8. Nothing new here on the CI Mid in terms of outlines, but the rails and bottoms are. We aren't claiming anything, just pulled out some old curves and this is our own new take on it, just for fun. Enjoy.

@@topdeckdog well then I'd also like to say to ci if your listening. Please shape the swallow twin version with a down rail. The down rail will allow the rail to dig more obviously....but you know that because your ci... Also make it heavy. This shouldn't be a light board. Put some glass on it! And if you think it's too heavy...it's not , more glass. And send me one as a prototype 6'6 please.

Great, we have a lot of EC customers raving about it. It's not a small wave grovel board. Ideally riding in chest high to several feel overhead.
