First time i heard this was in 1979 and I was blown away. And the most incredible part is, they played this at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Imagine going to the Jazz festival and these guys show up and blow the doors down with dixie bluegrass stomp? Listen to the audience at the end. They were amazed too. Imagine the balls of these guys dropping a country bluegrass tune on them. AMAZING.

I've seen Steve about 15 times over the years. Mostly with his solo band, but with The Dregs once, Kansas once, and jamming with the T Lavitz band. The best times of my life.

The Dregs were awesome. They played my college homecoming in about 1979. Steve Morse is a beast on guitar. He taught Allen Sloan his violin parts on the guitar. I had a buddy who was a dead ringer for the bass player Andy West. Morse was in the music department at the University of Miami and met the drummer, Rod Morganstern, there. Morse was voted guitarist of the year by Guitar Magazine many times. Morse has also played with Deep Purple and Kansas....

I was a teenager in 1978-79 when a friend of the family was helping find music for my new stereo. He had attended U of M music school and knew the musicians and said I should check them out. Night of the Living Dregs was one of my first albums and established a search for great music that wasn’t neatly categorized.

Seen them multiple times as far back as the mid 70's and more recently for a reunion tour a few years back. They are putting another reunion together in 2024, not sure how many dates they will play but will try to get to see them maybe one last time.

I saw the Dregs at The Great Southeast Music Halll in Atlanta which was a small club back in the 70s. The scheduled band had canceled and they were filling in. I had never heard of them and asked the ticket taker if they were any good. He asked the guy behind me in line if they were any good and he said they were all right. It was Steve Morse and the guys trying to get through the door.

Back in 1993 the wife and I were out back of a club waiting for the Dregs having a little refreshment when this small sedan pulled up and all of the Dregs piled out like it was a clown car they had Jerry Goodman of the Mahavishnu Orchestra as a violinist that evening and Bela Fleck as special guest with them on banjo, it was fantastic!

I'm amazed at the accuracy he gets at that speed. This isn't just shredding, each note is deliberate and in the tune. Amazing!

I saw them a couple of months ago in Macon GA as they were kicking off a new tour. Morse has had to change his picking style due to arthritis but he hasn't slowed down a bit. Fantastic show.

    Oookay...😊
The melody they're playing off the top is 'The Wabash Cannonball'.
Steve said they strung a couple things together. I don’t recognize anything else yet. Cool anyway. 😎
I saw Steve Morse open for the trio of John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, and flamenco wizard Paco DiLucia in '82 or '83 in Toronto. He was the highlight of the show for me. Astounding technique, great compositional heart and a fertile improvisational imagination. Happily he also joined in for the end-of-show/encore and again showed his mettle. Cheers, Harri.

I was backstage at a Dregs show in Houston back around 1991, guitar teching for the opening band, and got to witness the Dreg's keyboard player have a tearful reunion with a lady that helped him out years back, providing him a place to stay etc. for a period of time. The keyboardist, T Lavitz, was the nicest pro musician I've met aside from Michael Anthony. There's lots of Dixie Dregs/Dregs/Steve Morse Band recordings out there, all of them wonderful. I'll suggest Free Fall (Dixie Dregs), Industry Standard (Dregs), and The Introduction (Steve Morse Band). Most of the compositions are straight ahead Rock, but many are etherial dreamy, and some border on Middle ages inspired.

The first song was the Wabash Canonball times 5. This is as it was recorded.

So glad you liked it, Harri. The Dregs are one of my favorite bands. The more you explore their catalog, the more impressed you'll be. Rock, classical, country, jazz, and bluegrass. It's all there. Look for Steve Morse's earlier stuff. Anything Dregs, solo, or the Steve Morse Band (SMB) will make you smile. For a ripping rocker, check out Stand Up by SMB. Happy listening, and thanks for a great reaction.

Welcome to Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs! Morse is probably the best guitarist/musician/composer you've never heard of. He's a world class guitar virtuoso who was classically trained at the music school at the University of Miami.
If you're up to it, this is a very deep rabbit hole indeed from his time leading the Dixie Dregs (the live Night of the Living Dregs is a tour de force), to his solo career (High Tension Wires, Southern Steel are just brilliant for starters) to his brief time with Kansas and then his brilliant and long run with Deep Purple. Morse is a national treasure IMHO.

I didn’t realize he went to The U. I saw him during his time with Kansas and several times with his band. He never failed to amaze me.

I was introduced to the Dregs by a college friend my freshman year. I saw them perform live twice in the 80’s and they were one of the best. In an interview given by Dregs guitarist Steve Morse he stated his favorite solo was from the song “Hereafter” on their album Dregs of the Earth. They do not just play the country fried rock you reacted to but excel at many different styles of music.

They were / are all over-achievers. 🙂 Steve Morse (guitarist) is also a commercial pilot, the violinist (Allen Sloan) became an anesthesiologist, Andy West (bassist) is also a programmer and businessman, Rod Moganstein (drummer) also plays piano. Not sure what else Mark Parrish was into at the time.

Harri........the Guitarist is the great Steve Morse. He was Deep Purple's Guitarist from 1994 to 2022 (28 years). The reason he left Deep Purple was so he could be with his wife. She was diagnosed with cancer and was going through cancer treatments. I saw him live with Purple 4 times.

Yes Steve Morse plays that fast. I saw them live a few times...and he tears it up! By the end he and the violinist start exchanging shorter and shorter bars. Starts with 16 bars, then 8, then 4, then 2, then a few notes at a time. It's a virtuoso piece for sure!

I love the Dixie Dregs- they are a bit of a fusion band, but very different, fusing bluegrass and rock and sometimes jazz
For some very different fusion, I suggest you try out the incredible Soft Machine; "Out-Bloody-Rageous" is a great track

  • @LeoCatrix
    @LeoCatrix 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Harri, may not be the fastest, but he's the most complete musically and technically. If you have heard his album "high tension wires" (truly a work of art) and the bridge he makes in Tumeni Notes with a single note per string with a clean sound, your head may explode. Humbly, I recommend you listen to that album.

  • @mrwidget42

Always great, but not the fastest. A few years ago it was a birthday gift from God that I was invited on a day's notice to play with a man who still holds the Guinness record for fastest flat picker, Dennis Agajainian. He nowadays organizes Samaritan's Purse relief flights to the most remote villages in Inuit parts of Alaska and other places.

Steve Morris' guitar playing is absolutely beyond belief!
He spent 25+ years as a member of Deep Purple until very recently.
