CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Curly (Jack Palance) tells Mitch (Billy Crystal) that the secret to life is "one thing." What that one thing is, is up to you to figure out.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
City Slickers blends sight gags, one-liners, and sincerity, with both humor and drama arising from the characters and their situations. Mitch (Billy Crystal) is a radio station sales executive who finds himself in the throes of a mid-life crisis; accompanied by two friends, Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) in the grip of similar problems, he heads to New Mexico for his birthday to participate in a two-week "vacation" cattle drive to Colorado. The three friends and the rest of their group, including an attractive, newly single young woman and two African-American dentists, are all urbanites lost when it comes to herding cattle and surviving on the prairie; it's up to authentic, almost mythic cowboy Curly (Jack Palance, who won an Oscar for the role), to whip them into shape. As various adventures occur along the way, including run-ins with outlaw cattlehands, treacherous natural mishaps, and Mitch's delivery of a newborn calf, the three "city slickers" open up to each other, learn to appreciate Curly's Old West values, and begin to resolve their midlife dilemmas. When Curly dies, it's left to Mitch, Phil, and Ed to bring in the herd.

A seriously underrated film and a VERY seriously underrated performance by Jack Palance. RIP.
He won the Academy Award for this performance. That's a pretty high rating. But I will agree that the movie itself was underrated.
@@bushhogky1 Believe it...... or not....
Jack did get an Oscar
Yes sir!
Lmao underrated, dude won an Oscar after a 40 year career.
This movie has always been a classic to me. Was my dad's favorite.
I ate the Marlboro man after a knife fight for acamel
This is among those movies that are a lot better than you expect them to be at first glance. It always leaves me a little teary eyed and butterfly nauseous.
Curly is really an existentialist, if you think about it. He’s not saying the cowboy life is THE way of life everyone ought to adopt, or that it even works for most people; his point is that the masses often “lead lives in quiet desperation” (Thoreau) without giving much thought to what really matters most to them. Most people want to escape from reality and divert their attention through entertainment and travel, but they often forget that the whole point of their daily life is to truly live it. You could be a cowboy, a politician, a priest, a business man, or in Mitch’s case, a family man. Whatever your “one thing” is, learn to love, protect, and cultivate it to the best of your abilities. And if anybody judges you for it, so what? It’s YOUR choice.
This is good.

Words of wisdom
Yep.
Billy Crystal is a comedic genius 😊
Jack Palance was the icing on this cake.
The good old days
1991? Yeah I guess it was alright.
I'm here because of Gary Keller's book. ❤️
JP did such a great job sounding like he had one more lung cell he was living on.
It was the PERFECT movie (thank you Babbaloo Mandel) ..... This scene sets up the remainder of the film, which without question, was the feel good movie of the 90s
Am I the only person who noticed how much Jack Palance’s cigarette fluctuates throughout this sequence??? Hahaha
If that's what you remember from the movie then movies probably aren't for you.
@@jeffsor47 there are MOVIE cigs. They are made at different lenghts, with a battery and a light on the end. Thats the gif.s job to keep track of the inconsistancies.Cant always control the real thing...most things in movie are fake, except Jack Palance's acting.
@@blackcotton2288 Why do you even bother critiquing movies if that silliness is what you find so intriguing? Stick to documentaries, escape movies isn't your thing.
The Legend...The Great Jack Palance
I must say Scapegoat, that was so beautifully put!!! Well said!!!
Greatest scene in a great movie?

Oh Jack... He also voices bad guy from swann princess.
RIP
Would have loved to have had more insight on the life a cowboy leads from Curly.
thank you
Had no idea Jake Gyllenhaal was in City Slickers till I watched ten facts about the mighty ducks ha.
Dude!!! Curly was a MGTOW!!
Better Call Jake difference is, he could get some should he try, you cant
@Doogie Carpit Burger Smooth Geryd Street MGTOW means Men Going Their Own Way
One thing😊
how cold was it when they shot this? You can see his breath, and it's not all from the smoke
WHAT IS THE ONE THING???????
Yourself.
For me it's get what you want out of life whatever you gotta do and don't let anyone stand in your way.

😝😂😂
A gorgeous performance by Jack Palance. He shoulda won an Oscar.
Oh wait...he did.
And one armed push ups to boot
I will turn 39 this november.. and I believe I finally found my one thing 🥳☀️ Hope you all find yours in time 👍🏻
What was it ?
@@princejohn2105 Southern Comfort and Coke in the sunshine to a song of The Kinks 😅👍🏻

"She could've been the love of your life?" "She is." a cowboy leads a different kind of life
Might be the best line in the movie.
He didn't even know her. It was a moment of attraction.
Curly struck me as somebody who never actually tried to make a go at it with anyone. He couldn't even have a close relationship with his brother. Too much of a lone wolf. He said it himself.
That story was more tragic than anything else.
@@OneGaurdian Similar line in Citizen Kane, this probably stole it. Mr Bernstein as an old man remembers the most a kind and beautiful girl getting off a ferry when he was young. He never spoke to her but remembered her beauty and how it gave him faith in the world around him. Art does that but the personal moments like that do it harder.
@@jeffcrosby5317 Agreed.
@@OneGaurdian to you, maybe. The fact that he was not "trying to make a go at it with anyone" proves he doesn't follow society's formula for what makes life fulfilling. He's completely content and joyous being just a cowboy and has committed his life to it. That is not tragic. That is success.
Totally deserved Oscar. It was great role for Jack Palance.
yeah, back when that actually meant something to America. now it’s just a bunch of jerks smugly patting each other on the back. bleh
All a person needs is that 'one thing'. You know... Curly wasn't wrong.
Not everyone always finds it, just like health, wealth or love.
One of those perfect movies with great actors and writing. It's a beautiful thing when everything just clicks the right way in some small corner of the cosmos. And Jack Palance? Non pareil.
Jack Palance was a pretty bright guy. He had a great career going and uprooted to Europe in the late 50's for quite a few years. He knew life was to be lived and also wanted his kids to experience it.
I love Curlys’ honesty. He doesn’t try to defend his life choices/mishaps . He owns them
I love the way that his cigarette is long, then gets short then gets long again right when he says, "that's what you gotta figure out"
He has one ready for each sentence lol
Jack was unbelievably great in this movie
Earned his Oscar!
You’ll find the older you get the more impact this scene has. When you’re young you’re too eager to try everything to really care but once those grey hairs peak through and those hangovers and injuries start to stick around longer than they used to you begin to think about this stuff a lot more. What really matters most in life? Not just family or having a good job but what really matters deep down on a personal level to you. Who are you beyond a name and what you show to the world? What am I here for? Sadly it’s a series of questions that don’t seem to matter to people anymore. But to the last generation to grow up without smart phones and social media, we were able to ask and some received their answer. Here’s to the 35 and ups who found or are still looking for “the one thing”. To quote the man himself “We’re a dyin breed”.
I love this movie, but never really considered it one of my favorites. But every time somebody asks me what my favorite movie is, this is one of the first ones that pops into my head. And this scene is the reason.
It's not that great. It's better than it seems though. Incredible cast, made me sad seeing Bruno Kirby.
@@NormAppleton It would depend on one's definition of great movie. What's yours?
"The secret of life" was my favorite part of the movie. It's 30 years later, and I still haven't figured out what my one thing is.
Find Jesus
Curly already told you man. It's your finger. He was just bullshitin' Mitch. Lmao
Being responsible to someone you really care about is it.
I took from this an important lesson and I knew what my one thing is, thanks curly and the writers
to me is just too be happy, do the things that make me happy, with the people who make me happy
Jack Palance was one of my favorite actors.
Truly one of the best pieces of advice I've got in life 😅
This is a great scene. It has always stayed with me since I first saw it back in ‘91. I’m not claiming to be enlightened, but it struck me like Buddhist stories of one speaking to a Zen master, then becoming instantly enlightened by something they said.
Thank you for sharing that. 1000% agree about that scene.
This was a favorite movie of a friend's father, he'd always get tired of watching tv and cycle through two or three movies he had on vhs, and City Slickers was one of them. Over the near decade I spent hanging out there, I'd have seen that movie well over a hundred times and this scene always stood out to me. I haven't found my one thing yet, but I'm convinced that Curly was 100% right about what he says here.
Not just cowboys, Curly! I hear yah, though! Could not have set it better myself.
Palance won the Academy Award for best supporting actor after this movie, he knew it and we knew it that it was a sympathy win, he has been making movie's since the golden age of Hollywood and this was his first and only win, so when excepting the award he went on to say " I've crapped bigger than Billy Crystal " before dropping and doing a series of push ups to say to the Academy 'I'm not dead yet'
I don't think it's a sympathy win. Great performance of a critical character and he did the serious parts so well.
I quote (paraphrase) this scene all the time.... i have a few "loves" of my life too... one in particular....
Since I’ve heard Curly AKA Jack say “There’s nothing like bringing in a herd”, and since pumpkin cookies is my only favorite thanksgiving desert and the only thanksgiving desert I love I say there’s no thanksgiving dessert like pumpkin cookies.
That one thing right after watching this movie......
Financial freedom over loving family .
20 years later : family over 💰💰 .
That one thing change as we grow older.
Now : what you have given the society / world 🌎 .
The one thing is never get married. Don't need permision to do what you want to do.
Curly nailed in on this one. It was really never going to get better than that. Think about it. How many times has reality lived up to expectations? Ever?
Thinking about this question I’d have to say yes. It has many times. But the dreams that have come true in my life have never done so in the way I imagined or expected, and lots of them came with trade offs
I first saw this movie when I was 8 years old. Now I'm a year older than Billy Crystal's character.
I've found my one thing.
DO YOU FIND JACK PALANCE AN ATTRACTIVE MAN WITH A SUPER SCARY FACE LIKE I DO ?
Almost like Freddy Krueger with skin
He was over 70 here. Looked really good for his age.
Like the way he says "she is "
I think Curley is great.
I'm picturing Curly talking to Mike Waszowski here...
Jack ..a great actor RIP thank you...
Man i miss Jack Palance.

Mike Wazowski and Lord Rothbart collaborate here, actor wise.
I like to imagine that Curly knows that Mitch is 39 and is complimenting him by guessing one year younger.
This is dedicated to the one I love :)
A lot of great scenes from this classic. One of my favs.🤠👍👏
The One Thing! I've just got my copy of a book with that title by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan! First published 2013. Looks like it's time to read it!
my fav movie...wow
Anyone who turns/becoming 39 should watch this.
You can see the time differences between the "takes" in this conversation scene by the various length Curley's cigarette ashes.
The sky matched up. For any movie maker that’s all that matters
This means a lot more as a man pushing 50
Sure as hell ain't two weeks of vacation.
2:28 my finger is point up?
I swear this is the answer to the One Piece too 😅
I was born early 80's, so this & the OG Batman movie are the only things I've seen Jack Palance in. But I feel a celebrity deep-dive coming on.
Also, imo, I used to think Mitch was hilarious. Now, 30+ years later, he's kind of annoying. He's the guy who tries to fill awkward silences with a joke. Like he did in Curly's Gold just before they started following the map.
now movies are crap
did you know, jack palance was in a film in 1968 called the mercenary, his nickname in that film was also curly
Lead a horse to water but……
He's right. It's a good motto to live by. Especially as you approach 40 years old...
☝️One Thing...
Keep it simple
It's almost unbelievable Billy Crystal doesmt do an impression of Jack Palance behind his back in this movie!!
1 thing:)
Sorry The One thing book brought me here

Curly´s character won 50 km of depth in this scene
Well well! Look at the city slicker pulling up on his fancy German horse!
