  • I tried a Moonwatch and MoonSwatch back to back and this is what I discovered. It was about time to compared the two watches together, the mighty Speedmaster and the humble Swatch, and the results surprised me.

    I have the Mission to Mercury. The MoonSwatch line actually makes me wish there were more exciting regular production models. Many of them are based on limited edition models that go for way too much money. I did consider a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (as well as the more exciting Speedy '57), but ended up with an Explorer II 226570. I'm satisfied with the fun of the MoonSwatch for now, but am hoping for more exciting Speedmaster Professional releases with the 3861 movement. If somebody wanted to give me the Sedna gold Speedmaster Professional I tried on the other day, I would wear that in a heartbeat. My budget won't allow that any time soon, possibly ever.

  • @Slaphitter
    @Slaphitter ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I have both. The Swatch is fun and basically silly. I wear it once in a while on the weekend, or when I’m doing something very casual. It is what it is, and it’s a nice looking plastic watch. My Omega, on the other hand, is an heirloom. That’s basically the difference.

    I always dreamed a moonwatch. I had been saving money for years for it. Last year when the moonSwatch came out I was ready to buy one to fulfill my desire of owning "something like" a moonwatch. Then I had to queue to buy one and I skipped on that. Thanks god I did that, after three months I decided to buy the real moonwatch with double sapphire crystal. Best (watch) choice of my life. I've been able to compare it on hands with a moonSwatch, there's nothing in common except the shape. Everytime I wear my speedmaster it's just a joy, it's for me the perfect watch and I've considered many times to sell all my other watches because they seem nothing compared to it (and I'm talking about Zenith, Omegas and Rolex here..), at the moment I didn't do that yet, but who knows... For me it's just the best watch ever made!

      Great choice 👌 I also got the 3861 sapphire sandwich. You're right, this watch is basically perfect. Especially since it got updates on the movement, smaller case and this beautiful stainless steel bracelet. Enjoy brother :)

    I’ve worn my moonSwatch for 6 months straight. I’ve owned the real thing as well. I prefer the moonSwatch. The real one is better, that’s a stupid question and not what this is about. I prefer it because It’s light, I don’t care about it being stolen. It’s fun. It’s accurate. I wear it running, doing the dishes, cutting grass… the crystal has some scuffs but nothing more than some of my other watches. I still love a good metal watch and love the real thing but I’d rather wear this moonSwatch as a daily driver…all the fun of a real moon watch without the risk and without the weight. People love to knock this on quality…but I’ve worn it 6 months every single day…looks almost as good as new. I have the mars and no scratches on the case, the band has not faded…the crystal is still clear minus some scuffs if you really look close.. no different then a scuffed up hesalite moon watch. Lume is great… no worse than real moon watch. It’s fun..and not as terrible as people think.

    Personally, I'd put £250 towards the other moonwatch. The 43mm Bulova Lunar Pilot. It has its own legacy and history. Worn by Dave Scott on Apollo 15 when the crystal came out on his Speedmaster, it was sold at auction for $1.6 million.
    Bulova's faithful recreation has a high accuracy mecha-quartz movement with very similar looks to the speedy. It would happily sit next to the Omega.

    • @williamthomas6106
      @williamthomas6106 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, My Bulova Lunar Pilot scratches the same Lunar itch that the Omega does, and it's a well made watch as well. I don't need to pay $250.00 for a watch that looks and feels like it belongs in the bottom of a bag of Carmel Corn and Peanuts.

Bought Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, and two Plutos. Gave each of my 3 sons one and they love them. All of us understand the difference between the two and feel there is room to enjoy both. Picked one up today and I really like it. I had a 3861 last year but I didn’t gel with it. I only have room in my collection for one luxury watch and it wasn’t going to be it. I do enjoy the look of it though and the Moonswatch gives me similar vibes for a fraction of the price. My explorer will get 95% of my wrist time but this is a fun watch to throw on now and again. Btw, I actually like the strap - as some others have mentioned, swap the part with the omega logo to the 12 position and it becomes much more comfortable.

    I have a moonwatch and have been thinking of buying a moonswatch when they just came out. The lack of stock and now that we are a few months later has just worn off the hype. But you can't think that you get the same quality as with the speedmaster but as long as you keep that in mind there is definitely a place for the moonswatch. It is just a low quality fun watch and I do like that! Just keep in mind what it is and don't think it is something else.

      Looking purely at the build quality and not the brands I would say the watch is worth 50€/55$. I'm guessing the materials and labor costs won't amount to much more than 30€/33$. A 300$ asking price is outrageous to me personally especially when you look at the MoonSwatches' durability.

    Andrew, next to compare is a fisher price piano and a Steinway. When the Swatchtrosity finally price drops to its true value of $30, I'll get one for each of the kids. To be sure the wait for the MoonSwatch isn't because it is so premium that production can't meet demand, or that withholding supply preserves some intrinsic value. It is much more like a high school science experiment that compares the value of colored pieces of paper to colored pieces of plastic. We just have to wait for the results.

    Like a lot of people, when the MoonSwatch first came out, I was caught in the frenzy and I was so ready to buy one on impulse without thinking (oh my, that blue Mission to Uranus version… or maybe the yellow Mission to the Sun?). But all versions turned out to be impossible to get. I was disappointed at first, but in the end that turned out to be for the best because by the time I finally could have purchased one, the truth had come out : the MoonSwatch is basically a low quality, short-lived (easily breaks, can’t be serviced or repaired or anything), pale imitation of a horological icon that can last generations. I know the contrast between the two is kind of the point, but to me it’s like a toy version you would find in a cereal box, only it’s actually very expensive for what you get. In my opinion, that type of cheap, disposable items is the kind of stuff the world needs less of, not more.

    I bought a Swatch steel chronograph before the MoonSwatch hype hit, the movement barely lasted the guarantee period, it had the same cheap ETA movement as the MoonSwatch. Another Swatch's movement was so loud I had to move the watch to another room so I could sleep (I returned it unworn).
    When I compare the MoonSwatch with a similarly priced Dan Henry 1939 chronograph for instance I have to conclude that the Made in China Dan Henry is an order of magnitude better than the Swiss Made MoonSwatch. The 1939 is not at the Moonwatch level at all, but the case is steel, the movement is a decent Miyota, the crystal is a double domed sapphire, and the two straps it comes with are very usable. That's definitely better material than an Amy Schumer stand-up routine (yikes, what did Amy ever do to you except bore you for a few minutes?)

    i have have the Moonwatch in hesalite, and the mars and Jupiter MoonSwatches (got them both at retail). Personally, i don't think the moonswatches cast a blemish on the moonwatch in any way... if you know the history, then you understand that they are two different things... if you don't know watches, then i don't think you would care. Moonswatches provide some very interesting colors, and its fun to match them to what your wearing... interesting thing... i've had several random folks notice and complement me on Moonswatches (Mars especially) but the real moonwatch doesnt get that treatment (unless i am hanging with a bunch of WIS at a watch meet)... But i think we can all agree that the Moonswatch probably generated more content for youtubers than any other watch in the last 2 years :) cheers!

      I totally agree with what you are saying the first moonswatch I got, are Mars & Jupiter the first because the small hands looked like the one used for Alaska project speedmaster 2008, and the second because I liked the colors contrast. now I have 6 colors and 50th anniversary snoopy speedmaster. they are not the same and it's not fair to compare them.

      Have a replica speedmaster reduced case with a moonswatch dial in it. It's a lovely upgrade that really elevates it to another level :) Word of warning though - you will irreversably damage the original case to pull the dial and movement out so once you go for it there is no going back.

    I have had a Speedmaster proper for many years now and it’s a fantastic watch, easily one of my most worn. But, still, I find myself wanting a Moonswatch (or two) because I love my Speedmaster so much that the shared DNA appeals. My friend has one and it looks great, and at the price (list price, that is), it’s a cheap enough watch that I don’t have to worry if anything happens to it. A beater with Speedmaster good looks, interesting materials, light weight, and funky colors? Sign me up.
    Also, what’s wrong with Colin Hanks?

    I have a mission to mars and a seamaster 300m. I actually like the audible ticking and reset animation of the moonswatch. For how much Omega focuses on materials, the moonswatch collection makes me wish they would go full Hublot and expand on the colors they offer with their ceramic watches. I would jump at a yellow ceramic aquaterra or Red Side of the Moon Speedmaster.

    I see the Moonswatch as an homage to the original. No one who was thinking of getting an Omega will end up buying a Swatch. I don't buy the elitist nonsense Watchfinder puts up here. When getting a moonswatch, at least you are buying a genuine collaboration with Omega, not a cheap knockoff that tries to be as close at possible. If you are a space / moonwatch fan but don't have the means for the original, I would say that the moonswatch is worth it, it was for me. Though the Bulova Lunar Pilot even more so...

  • @alsomika

    The thing that just can't be defended about the moonswatch is the price, no matter what people say about the name, the fact it's an "attainable omega", it's still a cheap cereal box watch for over 100 bucks, it's the perfect embodiment of manufacturing and marketing in the modern age

    Initially I wanted a MoonSwatch but during the pandemonium that happened during the launch I could not be bothered. I already have the 1863 moon watch (the one without the plastic mechanical bits if I recall correctly) and considered the MoonSwatch as a cheap alternative should I be out somewhere that I'd really prefer not to be liberated of my moon watch this would do. But it wouldn't, I would have been more likely to get into an altercation over the new MoonSwatch than my 1863 so decided not to bother, I might look at getting a MoonSwatch in the future but not any time soon, even if they stick a blue chrono second hand on it during the Blue Moon events. I still sort of want one though.

    As for the benefits, for Omega... I wore my Speedy Pro 7 years with only a few people asking about it from time to time. But since the moonswatch, a lot more people recognize the watch and ask about it. That's brand awareness and future customers.

Ive got a breitling and tudor and a few other quality pieces, ive always wanted a moonswatch though ever since i sat in line for it last year and missed out lol. As always, there are objective grounds as to why Moonwatch is not a good product: It is designed to fail.
    The objective reasons for that:
    1. It will inevitably fail either in normal use or even when not used simply from the effects of time, and
    2. It can't be repaired and parts replaced, at least not without far too expensive and elaborate non-conventional means
    This is because:
    -Its crystal can't be replaced: you break it or scratch it bad enough and that's it, the watch is trash.
    -I have heard from experts that its movement has a finite life of about max. 10 years, even if kept sitting in a drawer. It doesn't last very long. And then:
    -Its movement can't be replaced, it's not designed to be opened and have the movement taken out, nor do they AFAIK sell those movements separately.
    So all in all these small, deliberately designed issues make it a "throwaway trinket", a product of planned obsolescence. It would be a totally different story in my opinion if this watch could be made into a "forever watch" or just not a ticking time bomg by ensuring that small inevitable mishaps and simple passage of time won't turn it into junk. With simple changes, into a design more typical like most other watches, that could be changed.
