I cannot think of a jazz pianist that is better at creating tension, and then releasing several minutes later keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. It would be highly impossible to fall asleep at a McCoy Tyner concert. The man is a true master.
Yes, me too. I watch this video often simply in order to be awestruck. A True Master with a unique style, at the top of his powers. He commands so much respect. A Cathedral of Sound. A Mountain. RIP
Unbelievable. When Coltrane played this on sax it seemed unreal to move that fast and have a melody. That Tyner is doing it on keys is just sheer genius. As much as I like Bill Evans, Tyner has a different dimension to his playing.
No one could touch McCoy! And yes, I love Bill Evans, too. But Mr Tyner consistently delivered a deeply uplifting, profound, and mesmerizing spiritual experience, which no words could adequately describe.
Oh, for Pete's Sake. This isn't happening!! I've watched and listened over and over again and have concluded - it's just an illusion. Its impossible to do this! @JayIvory87 it partitions the octave into three major thirds, so that it moves through the keys of B major, G major and Eb major. The tonics of these keys form a descending cycle of major thirds, that, when completed, form an equally-subdivided octave: B-G-Eb-B.
Listening half of the speed this video is also mind blowing..all the clarity of his playing and lyrical conduction is revealed so obviously, we can follow more precisely what it's very hard for a normal mind to distinguish at the real speed.. such a giant Mc Coy
Do you remember the story about the feud between Miles and Thelonious Monk, where they started writing tunes AT each other? Well, it ended with "So What", when Coltrane jumped in with a solo in which he said "ALL RIGHT ALREADY!"
If every musician tried to appeal to the entire world, everything would be like the crap on MTV. Its called artistic integrity, taking something that you know is good and performing how you think it should be done. Some people wont like it but that its all part of being an artist
The MCCOY TYNER HIMSELF -- is PERFORMING IN 2018 -- a few dates in the New York area -- beginning 30 April. I urge you not to fuck around and miss this opportunity, if you have the means.
And if this kind of thing appeals to you, another top tier pianist, Ellis Marsalis, can still be attended in New Orleans, at least for now. I wouldn't delay if you have the means. That's Ellis, the pianist, the patriarch of the family -- not the kids, who play other instruments.
WOW!!!!!! Enough said.....Do anyone know where I can get "giant steps"....I don't read but I can read charts..... Well I can understand this dude a lot better then Art Tatumm.....but they are both just NASTy....LOVE IT!!!!

"TAKE THAT RACHMANINOFF!!!" ::to think my 7th grade piano teacher told me jazz pianists don't have good technique:: i'm guessing she never saw this vid...
Here's the thing, you said this isn't jazz simply because hes playing fast with complex harmonies in his improvisation. That is false for 2 reasons: 1) tyner is a jazz artist who plays nothing but jazz and here hes doing a different take on his former band/friend's song. Hes not playing anything other style or genre of music. 2) A good deal of jazz artists with technical facility you can argue have at least 1 time have "shown off" like johnny griffin, art tatum, oscar peterson, parker, coltrane
Incredible jazz pianist and technically one of the finest ever. So sad to see he's no longer with us. My late father, a pianist himself, thought Tyner was simply in another league. And he was right.
McCoy's playing is powerful and majestic like a mighty ocean.. He explores and deals in the infinite rather than being hemmed in by finite barriers that shackle most ... It's spellbinding to see how he dances around the whole piano in pure glee and literally breathes life into that instrument while making it sing in ecstasy as he bares his beautiful soul to the world... Yes, there is no doubt that his musical father, John, is smiling in heaven. What an awesome legacy. Thank you!
What people tend to overlook, because of the astonishing technique on display (and not just lots of notes, but the precision of his articulation) is how coherent the entire performance is. Playing this dense can easily devolve into a big jumble of noise. But in this performance there is a variety of dynamics and textures, plus intriguing interludes, that give the presentation a clear dramatic strucure that even an uninitiated listener can grasp and relate to.
I have seen McCoy over fifty times in the last 35 years and he just keeps getting better. I saw him play solo with this much energy for 2 1/2 hours at the Stanford Jazz workshop a couple years before this video. No PA system, just a piano out on the stage. What can I say? What you hear is who he is. A most amazing person.
This s just beyond incredible. The interaction between left and right hands is just genius. And to create this kind of energy and sustain this tempo in a solo performance is just remarkable! Thanks McCoy for showing us new possibilities in music and piano playing!

That was pure genius. He's a Mozart in his own right and style. Jazz in the new classical indeed - a platform for creativity, technicality and brilliance!
Fell in love with McCoy's playing when I heard his Focal Point album for the first time. What some posters here may not realize is that he has gone through some major evolutions as a player (eg., compare his work with Hubbard on "Ready for Freddie" with his own "Fly With The Wind"). He is a percussive player-that is his strength. There are no random notes. Watching him live is almost hypnotic. I shook his hand once; found him to be very gracious and kind. Truly, one of the greats.
That true, but it should also be noted that without technicality there is no music either. Many non-musicians have a very romanticised view of the way music is created and they don't realised that the greatest part of it is the result of hundreds upon hundreds of hours of practice. By far my favorite pianist of all time-and the McCoy Tyner Trio (Aaron Scott, Avery Sharpe and McCoy Tyner) is by far my favorite group. Those three are just so perfect together it's unbelievable. When they play pieces like Monk's Dream, Yesterdays and Crescent (oh god) it's just mind-blowing.

May he RIP.

check out Joey Alexander plays Giant Steps.
and Art Tatum plays Tiger Rag
mmh what about Stravinsky's hero..Art Tatum??
gershwin was dead decades before giant steps was written and was not really a virtuoso pianist.
Agustinus Pandensolang alexanders giant steps ie weak compared to this
@@RomanNewhouse Depends what you like. This kind of joyless display of virtuosity and speed or the soulful musicality of Joey.
McCoy Tyner is without a doubt one the greatest jazz pianists of all time!
Love this take on giant steps!
Tyner is definitely a great in his own right. It's amazing how much genius was concentrated in that quartet.
The hardest jazz song to solo on 😍😍😍rip mccoy
Mind body coordination and memory......amazing!
This is just sic! Dayum!! I can't pick my jaw up. My mind exploded and I lost sight of his fingers moving in a blur like a cartoon.
17 hands, 2 brains and 3 stomachs...
That's what i need to play this half as good as Tyner.
