Decrystallizing Reason is one of the most beautiful song I've ever heard
The start of "Decrystallizing Reason" at 4:40 takes me to Middle East. It is gorgeous.
They were like, 22 years old when they made this and it was the their 3rd album. That's what blows me away. To already be established, genre defining musicians, playing at this level with such discipline is insane. I don't know about you all, but I certainly wasn't the most driven or focused individual in my early 20's. Much respect!
4th album, but still, your point is valid. 😉
@@divinefallfromgraceif you're referring to the ep as the first yeah, but I wouldn't
@@divinefallfromgrace
No, it's the 3rd Emperor album. EP:s are never counted as albums.
Although the EP is their best work. Typical with these bm bands.
@@Battlelord187 he’s saying it’s impressive that they were so young. That’s why it matters. Kids made an epic classic….like are you not understanding?? Or…
"Of blindness and subsequent seers" is a masterpiece.
The quintessential black metal album. The greatest musicians of the genre at their peak. Fucking timeless.
@@Easun36 How is it not BM?
@@Easun36 this is not prog death. prog death is Opeth, Cynic, Edge of Sanity, etc. This is some kind of symphonic prog black.
It's not DM. Educate yourself
@@Easun36 Bro , this shit was already hashed out a decade ago, give it a FUCKING REST. Im so sick of these dorks focusing on shit no one cars about.
@@Easun36 you are an absolute amateur
This album came out in 1999 and that year I was bombarded by Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. What a treasure this album is.
In a year full of Spears and Aguilera your first shot is at Limp Bizkit. Ok.
@@Quarantineism I'd forgotten all about Aguilera.
Не смей задница ровнять Emperor с Limp Bizkit и прочим говном!!!
@vampiricacademiaancientlib2225reported 😂😂 jk
@bend2690 Limp Bizkit sucks as much as aou like it for yourself. For me it was quite a fun time and considering their stage presence at festivals and record sales, other people thought so, too. Spears is a fucking lunatic.
I used to listen to this album from start to finish after 12 hour shifts at work back in the early 00's. I got home most times just at the last song was ending. Hail Ihsahn and Emperor!

An elegy of Icaros is a fcking masterpiece.
I agree....if only Ihsahn would have Steven Wilson remaster Anthems, or fuck do it himselfOMFG
@@josephmoore5967 please no. please keep Sweater Wilson away from Emperor
@@knjaznechrist then SOMEBODY do it right, if not Ihsahn, then somebody in- scene. Satyr. Just do a Yes production, give all the mix breathing room. There's simply too much genius in all the melodies and riffs, Tryms work is buried so is Ihsahns vocals... Even a mix like IX Equilibrium would make Anthems fucking shine👍💀🤟
When they made black metal sounds progressively and symphonically, and yet not over the top
I feel like this comment is a stab at dimmu borgir lmao
While I agree I think this is very over the top but in an intentional and very good way not ridiculously cheesy there is a very fine line
@@zsjb_ Oh yeah. I remember back in the days Dimmu Borgir and Emperor were usually compared since they were the most notorious users of symphonic elements in the norwegian BM genre.
But while Dimmu Borgir were good, i always thought Emperor did it better. More sophisticated, less cheesy, more atmospheric, more subtle.
@@livingbeing1113 you took the words right out of my mouth, dimmu borgir aren't bad, it's just that emperor is another level
Emperor is great, and so is Enslaved with their black viking metal meets prog rock, albums like Eld, Frost,Isa, Mardraum are great
Warriors of modern death is so underrated!
Bathory influences?
One of the most importants bands in black metal 🤘
The production on this album is just incredible, the drums just cut through so clear and Curse you all men has the be one of the greatest opening tracks of any album ever.
I feel the snare is waaaay too quiet in the mix and the rest of the kit is super loud, otherwise, I agree.
Agreed, although the guitars with that overwhelming buzz can be deafening, lol.
Parts of this album remind me of parts of the soundtrack of SNES Prince of Persia.
This has to be their heaviest
Underrated album. this is more like symphonic extreme metal rater than black metal. the progression of their sound is very clear here.
jumpfart666 extreme metal isn't really a genre just a term used to distinguish "normal" heavy metal bands from more intense, brutal, "extreme" forms of Metal. Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Grind core, Metal core, Deathcore and Metallic Hardcore are considered "extreme metal", even some Doom Metal bands, mainly Funeral Doom Metal bands
Yeah, you can see how it progresses towards Prometheus, and ultimately Ihsahn's self titled solo debut. Beyond that first of his solo projects, it gets pretty far into proggy-mathy, I guess.
Literally every TH-cam metal album video has a comment by someone saying it's "underrated". Liking an album and not everyone else in the world doing the same doesn't make it underrated.
Totally agree, my fav album of Emperor
@@Headbanger9000 Not any more thrash metal is considered extreme, after Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Anthrax got into mainstream .

Emperor's magnum opus, in my opinion. Many say Anthems and i have nothing to say about that, but i think this was even better and more sophisticated. Better production too, although the buzzing of the guitars can be overwhelming.
Great record from beginning to end, fantastic compositions, riffs and Trym's drumming. Of Blindness & Subsequent Seer, the title track, An Elegy Of Icaros, Decrystallizing Reason, such awesome atmosphere.
Brings back a lot of memories from those days, time flies unfortunately but music is like a time's machine, it can take us where we want.
I can get behind that idea but to me Anthems will forever be the album that completely turned me into a lifelong metalhead.
@@Maya_Ruinz Anthems is awesome! I just prefer IX personally.
this album has aged like fine wine, unless I'm just burnt out on Anthems. But I'm gonna give this a spin the next few weeks
Perfectly said! Anthems is definitely their most important album, buy this one's my favorite.
Guitars that sound like a chainsaw is kinda a key component of black metal lol
King Diamond shrieks in full force
Tyrm's drumming sounds like an earthquake or avalanche!

@@AEMachinas that's right sir, you said it !!!!!
I would say this is one of their most ambitious albums. Mixing is a little bit muddled and being medieval and epic was already been done in the previous record and - that was what I thought when it first came out.
I'll never grow tired of this band, listening to them now I'd say for the best part of 15 years and the songs still sound fresh. My favourite band of all time
I'll be seeing them in July in CA. Already got tickets. Been listening to them since I was 16, and I'm now 40.

Emperor impeccable as usual, their career was always In crescendo and the orchestral arrangements Ihsahn made are ahead of time.
My favorite Emperor album🔥👌
Trym is a BEAST!!!!!!!
Probably my favorite of the 4 Emperials
one of their masterpieces!!!. all hail the migthy Emperor!
This is absolutely epic! The power that lies within this album is indescribable! Thanks Emperor!
Pure, badass art!!!!
This album is monumental.
Mighty Mighty Emperor at the highest Point of their creative path! There are bands more complex and faster, but no one in this world shows more musicality. The parts of the Songs are like they organically grew out of each other, every drumfill is different, gitars expressing fastness by Special Tremolo effects and sounds like laser (of blindness and subsequent seers)... endless examples i could write here! I celebrated this Album in the 90s when it came out. For me, they blasted cradle of filth away, wich i adored before. The prometheus Album has a few aspects further developed than here, but i heared, that, when they did it,they were a bit frustrated and that the decision was allready made to put an end to emperor after this. Somehow, i can hear that on Prometheus. When they made lX Equilibrium, there was a rumor that emperor considered them selfes not to come from this world... this is, what iove to hear!!!
...and there are many songs incredible and great but " of blindness and subsequent seers" is the crown. (By the way, i took the name of Bruce Lee because i train his jeet kune do fighting system. Baldur Moizisch is my real name.) Dear Emperor, please reunite and go on, where you left IX Equilibrium! Come on! Even Messiah made a new album after a thousand years break!
Dissection is great when it comes to musical creativity. All the elements you see here you can see in their work.
my favorite Emperor album ❤ very original and creative
As a Death Metal fan is not easy to me listening Black but emperor clearly kick ass.
It's interesting you say that because Samoth injected a lot of his Death Metal styling into this album. At the time, Samoth wanted to move more towards DM and Ihsahn wanted to stick with their style of BM which is what led to the eventual split of the band. Listen to this right after World ov Worms by Zyklon (which also had Trym on Drums) and you'll see some uncanny similarities.
@@killbeers6890 Thanks. Playlist of WoW by Zyklon:

@@killbeers6890 well it is odd that Ihsahn has not been doing black metal neither death metal which sounds like they fought over for nothing, at least his side.

The Mighty Emperor in their prodigious time was undeniably a force of nature. HAILS!!!!
I don't remember the year I bought the album if it was 1999 or 2000
The whole album is sick
Emperor being Emperor..bought, played,enjoyed.
19:24 Mercyful Fate
It's crazy to think that I listened to this album 20 years ago.... I loved it, yet wrote it off. I even sold my tape copy for cents.
I sit here, years wiser, with a drink in hand, and think:
How is this their 3rd album? It's too refined, a technical beauty!
How is this their second-to-final album? They have so much potential!
...And finally, I wish Euronymous didn't destroy this band from the inside out.
I just did my math. I'm old 😆 and talentless 🤣
How did Euronomous destroy Emperor?
19:24 Black Metal meets King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. Awesome screams! \m/ \m/
@Sidith Went ahead and subscribed! ,🤟🔥🔥🔥🤟
At 31:45 you can hear the same bell ringing like in "For whom the bell tolls" by Metallica. Excellent album by Emperor, as usual! Its great to see their development from raw and cruel to cristalclear composing close to orchestral character without any disappointments.
Agree. It's great. I appreciated it after years. Previously it was too much change after Anthems.
The same bell as in The Acclamation of Bonds on Anthems perhaps?
please don't ever again mutter the words metallica and emperor, together in the same sentence.
thats like being gay
I know that was inappropriate, I´m sorry but I had to do it once for scientific matters. It will never happen again! :-D
***** You DO know Emperor paid tribute to Metallica in Acclamation of Bonds?
2020 and it feels just like the first time i listened to this album! Those Rob Halford influences though!!!
King Diamond all the way.
And Halford too 👍
The King indeed!
This is on a whole over level man wow
Riff since 29:19 is amazing!
reminds me of the NWOBHM era bands
This is the second best album by Emperor right after "In the nightside eclipse" in my opinion. I'm always blown away by "the source of icon E". Love it
simEXO Me too, Insahn sounds like King Diamond with the high vocals in that song. my favorite on the album
Agreed.
no. Anthems to the welkin is their best followed by nightside then everything else
@@willgregg1076
"Anthems..." is a great album no doubt about that. Any "ranking" is a matter of personal preference I suppose.
Well there's ITNE, and different Emperor ( Anthems and IX Equilibrium are very similar) so I view it separately!
Of course everything is subjective opinion and matter of preference.
I love Emperor, In the Nightside Eclipse is best symphonic Black Metal album, just insane! Then there's the Anthems and IX Equilibrium which are very good but in a way it's like another band!
Anyway Emperor is great music 🤘🏿
playing the first song on guitar, quite complicated and almost death metal like. 9/10
+czr7j9 My guess is that Samoth wrote it. I think he was still writing some material at this stage although Ihsahn did most of it. The riff sounds more Zyklon than Peccatum. I could be wrong though.
I tend to agree. That riff sounds like Samoth/Euronymous and not Ihsahn at all.
I thought I'd completely forgotten this album in its totality.untill I heard em shriek.. "CURSE YOU ALL MEEEEEN! RAAAAARGH!" 🤘🤬🤘. honestly thought I might have grown out of the blackest of metals.but it's hard to shake that addiction once ur already hooked on that wasp-in-a-bucket style riffage n don't forget bout them double bass drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrums!. although in my (slightly) older age I cud probly do with more clean/operatic vocals in the black metals.dont get me wrong I luv a good strategicly placed shriek or grunt as much as the next dude.but the frequency of all those abrasive regular vocals do tend to grate on my middle aged brain after 15min or so 😭
the best album
This and Prometheus, IMO, are just as important as the 2 "classic" Emperor albums
Many people overlooked Prometheus and that's kinda sad
In costant evolution, always great stuff from the early ep's to Prometheus. This album is insane

The best vocals of Ihsahn were on the debut album of the band, another great performance of best vocals by Ihsahn can be found on the song Of Blindness & Subsequent Seers, this song contains also two fine guitar solos, this album was my first introduction to Emperor, of course i found later all their albums and also saw them live twice in 2006 and 2014, and i'm following also after Ihsahn solo career, this album has a great importance for me since it was the album that introduced me with black metal, this album is fantastic and i can't understand the disppointment of others, thanks for sharing,

Can't figure out if I like Anthems or this one better.
How about "In the nightside eclipse"? Besides all three of them are great pieces of BM.
Anthems is definitely better than this but it's still solid
nightside is the realest. this one is really really great but sort of lacks cohesion and its a bit overwrought at times. anthems seems like a pretty good middle ground. but yeah... nightside is the realest.
