I tried to like Harry Potter when it was trending. I read the first book, I couldn’t even get half way. I watched the movie, I got distracted only 15 minutes through it. I tried so hard to like the series. I couldn’t... I found it so boring.
@@niamhbutler5685 It's kind of insulting that you said "I feel sorry for you." Just because someone does not like Harry Potter. People have different tastes and sometimes non-mainstream opinions. You are projecting your opinions onto someone else. As a disabled person, it reminds me too much of when people tell a disabled person that they feel sorry for them. Despite the fact that disabled people are very diverse and that there are plenty of them that are quite happy over all. Really irritating.
@UFHoee "Harry Potter is pure comfy".... That maybe so if you can relate to it on some level. For me and so many others though... How am I supposed to relate to watching what is effectively a school drama a very large part of the time in each movie? How am I supposed to relate to group of kids going on adventures with such cliche and childish plot development that it so unbelievable, that it doesn't feel like i'm watching an amazing plot unfold? The world of Harry Potter doesn't feel real even on its own terms, it does not promote a suspension of disbelief, because everything about it feels like it's meant for children.
What I find interesting is how the Song of Ice and Fire novels seem to completely ignore all of this, which indicates that it wouldn't sell at all, yet it sells incredibly well.
I liked the books because they were interesting and were funny, filled with emotion, real emotion to not fakey sappy stuff, real love exists but so does hate kinda emotion. And I thought the characters were relatable, I loved that one of the main characters was a girl who loved to read and learn. And Harry had confidence and modesty and so many other qualities that I loved. Why does their need to be a great philosophical reason for it being popular.
I LOVE Harry Potter! J. K. Rowling is an amazing writer and person! I don't care what other people think, I love the books and movies! Just talking to the haters. Most of them are Twilight fans. I hate Twilight SO MUCH!
Yes i have. I have not much time L (picture makes the blinking not visible but i ussume left) help me now sos sos sos (sos is repeated for the rest of the video)
Normally because Harry Potter is a fantasy series I've found that almost all comparisons and contrasts of the books get compared to other pinnacle fantasy novels. I've never thought of Dickens as a comparison! It's interesting to think about the similarities, especially with the "phenomenon" that surrounds these writers and their fiction. I like all the insight into character, this was quite interesting to watch!
While watching this video, it slowly dawned on me that you all might be an audience that would appreciate "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality." I can't link to it here, but a simple Google search will take you to this fan-authored version of Harry Potter with a scientific twist. Take it for a spin! Digging the new channel, btw :o)
There seems to be cut in this interview. Is there anywhere else where I can see the whole film? I'm very interested in what Greg Currie has to say further about the Harry Potter series.
So people likes a martyr, which behavior is oblivious to most of the circumstances of his environment, and is surrounded by colorful characters who share the same attributes? all this summed up, with a familiar setting in this case school life which just happens to have magic, and together facilitates a way of escapism?
Twilight is not really what he meant by XX century. And it did not try to get away from popular writing. The main character is surrounded by vivid characters and experiences a positive change in her life thanks to the new environment she's in.
If I understand this correctly, the fact that the characters in Harry Potter are more driven by their vices and virtues than real people ever would be (which I assume explains why they would make different choices compared to us if we would find ourselves in their situations) is one of the keys to write successful literature?
For some meaning of the word successful, yes. But I think the reception of a new book has largely to do with the "trending" state of mind, which varies a lot.
I noticed the book on Wittgenstein. I hope you touch upon his view of semantics in your future videos, because it's a very interesting subject (even though I myself don't really grasp all of his premises for semantic logic.) You've gained a subscriber!
Good analysis, but in terms of psychology you left out the self-serving bias which probably also leads people to identify with the "good" protagonist. From wikipedia: "A self-serving bias occurs when people attribute their successes to internal or personal factors but attribute their failures to situational factors beyond their control".
To be fair, most any well respected historian will say the hardest Historical study is the historical study of the present. Many historians actually think it is "impossible" to see History "unfold right before your eyes." Again, to be fair, most all advancements throughout history have come about by rejecting popular conceptions of reality; the popular culture today seems to be especially vulgar in that it accepts many of the negatives of past history and few of past history's positives.
Dont forget that not all present culture is made of the popular side. Culture is a much wider concept, it englobes all of society. And that includes the other side of the coin you forgot to mention(meaning the people who work in science, maths or even people in general that give a meaningful contribution to society). Certainly non-conformity plays a role at society's advance and no one here denied that now, did they?
I've had professors like him. It's more that he talks deliberately. He wants you to be able to think on what he's saying and process it as he is saying it.
Would your boggart turn into your phobia or being attacked by an axe wielding murderer? Boggarts seem to do what people's realistic subconscious fears most, not the worst possible scenario sort of fear.
"Again, to be fair, most all advancements throughout history have come about by rejecting popular conceptions of reality; the popular culture today seems to be especially vulgar in that it accepts many of the negatives of past history and few of past history's positives." I was commenting on that.
I know exactly what you mean "a villain sort of guy" that was why I wasn't a huge fan of Voldemort, I get it, he is suppose to be kind of empty and some people like that, but I absolutely love love love the Joker from The Dark Knight, and Moriarty from Sherlock. I find villains are more important than heroes most of the times, would you recommend some shows/movies with amazing villains?
Philosophy to me, seems to be the study of things that you can say are there, but are not a physical thing. For example you can say that being offensive is bad. And it makes sense to you, philosophy asks why being offensive is bad, why does it make sense? Its somewhat a study of human behaviour and thought that borders on psychology.
I quite like that though I lost interest in the Potter Books years ago, this is really interesting. But that may be because it also describes the Witcher Books by Mr. Sapkowski very well and those are simply brilliant.
You still didn't explain why these incredibly long books were so popular and with young adults. I've read that most of the underlying stories have to do with young people triumphing over adults which is a teenage fantasy for many kids.
@Wharwulif The thing is - I am a villain sort of guy. I tend to love villains in movies. You know, the whole "love to hate" sort of deal? Voldemort doesn't do that. Then again, he is a clumsy dumbass who gets defeated 6 times. That's kinda embarrassing. and do you remember in Deathly Hallows part 1, where he has gathered all those people? The scene itself was threatening; but I struggled to not burst into laughter in the theater, just because of Voldemort's performance.
@Wharwulif LOL True. XD Oh, I also want to mention one of the bigger plotholes of the franchise now. Remember the Boggart, right? Turns into what you fear the most? And the story claims everyone fears Voldemort more than anything... but no one - NO ONE seems to make Voldemort appear as they approach the Boggart. For being the "Dark Lord", he really sucks at making people genuinly fear him. Lupin even fears the moon more than him... that fact must kick Voldemort in the groin pretty hard. :P
I think you missed my point. I was trying to say that, in History, the present is more distant than the past. I'm not sure what you thought I was saying.
Shows with amazing villains? Well, let's see... Star Wars: Clone Wars (the new CGI one) and Batman: The Animated Series would be my suggestions there. As for movies with amazing villains... The Quick and the Dead, Shrek 4, Osmosis Jones, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rango... but by far my nr 1 recommendation would be Needful Things. That movie has a beyond amazing villain. :)
Do you get help with making the videos? cuz my grandparents wouldnt be able for this your videos arent only content wise very good but also cut well and filmed well good job!
@NamronSeven (cont)..... Whereas say LOTR’s I had to really concentrate on what I was reading. Am sure Rowling could have but big words in the books and made it more of a challenge but did it this way so it’s more readable. In that regard it is well written

@NamronSeven Told you I suck at English. But 6 in 1 sentence is still a bit too much, especially since some of them say the same thing you have already said. @Wharwulif Yeah - I've always marked that as hilariously stupid myself. I mean, come on... Maybe we could continue this discussion through PM? Just a suggestion, as what we write here fills up a lot of space, and the comments are limited.
