  • The Roadrunner is a classic R/C kit plane that Josh picked up at the 2013 Toledo Show. The previous owner installed a 38cc gas engine and the Flite Test crew set out to get this large scale plane back into the air!

A little tip with gas engines: Set the prop so that it rests parallel to the wings when the piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC). This way, if you get a dead-stick, the prob won't be stuck and down, and your landings will easier. It also helps when starting these bad boys up! Anyways, great job getting the old plane to fly. :) My dad actually has one just like it, although his is blue and while.

I'm feeling old at 50, I have never flown electric only gas and nitro 30 years ago, that plane looks easy to fly and runs good too. Thank you for bringing back memories.

This brought back memories. I flew RC back in the early 70’s when all we had was 2 cycle nitro engines and 4 channel radios on the CB band, 27 MHz. My favorite plane was the Ugly Stick. It was a 72” wingspan pulled by an Enya 60. My first radio was a Heathkit, which I had to completely build, including the servos. Fly some more of the oldies. I think even the younger audience would like them.

I'm late to this party but have some interesting history for you about the Road Runner! It was designed and kitted by Frank Gunsaullus and he lived in Riverton, WY.
My Father and I met him in 1956 in Guymon, OK. He and I were flying free flight and Dad was flying RC . Dad taught him to fly RC and they became best friends. I started flying RC in 57 and we really had a good time.
Then in the early 60s Dad and Frank and 2 other guys bought a full scale 1946 Taylorcraft and Frank got his Instructor license so I became his first student when I was 16. I got 27 hours in the Tcraft and then they sold it so I didn't get my license until 1968. (BTW, they paid $800 for that Tcraft and each guy put in $200...I don't think any had enough on their own to buy it outright!)
Later Frank and Dad sold go karts together...they were truly best friends. But in the late 60s or early 70s Frank moved to WY.
When I retired from the Army in 94 I put in a Hobby Shop in San Antonio and drove to Wyoming to buy out another friend who had closed a hobby shop in Alabama. Since I was so close I went to see Frank in Riverton and we caught up on 30 years of lost time. I told him I had a friend looking for a 1.2 to 1.6 sized Ugly Stick and he told me his RoadRunner was that size and he thought he had a kit in his shop. I bought it and brought it home. My friend built it in 95-96 and flew it on an OS 1.60 glo engine. I now own it and fly it with a DLE 35cc gasser and it is awesome. It has oversize control surfaces and flaps and is very aerobatic. Wheel landings are beautiful. I fly it several times a month. If I could figure out how I would attach a picture of mine.
Enjoyed your show and while many have given advice here's mine. You can put the fuel tank on the CG so the plane doesn't change from full to empty. The pump on the engine will pull the fuel just fine. You can make a cork fit the carb and use it to choke the engine. Put it in the venturi and use the spring starter until it fires...it can't run with the choke in so it will try to run and stop. Then take the cork out and it should start in 2-3 runs of the spring starter.
Keep that gasser going...mine does flat Spins, tumbles, pop tops and point rolls just fine but as I said all surfaces are oversized!
    👍🇺🇸🙂

The carburetor on that has a built in fuel pump that works with the pressure in the engine crankcase. The fuel tank can be below the carb and still run. But, carburetors with a bowl on the bottom of it needs the fuel tank to be above the carb because it gets fuel using gravity. You would need an external fuel pump if the gas tank is below the carburetor with a bowl in order to run. So, you're fine with the fuel tank. Hope this helps

A few years ago I bought a Great Planes kit the Ultra Sport 1000 and it suggested a Super Tigre 2500 for the engine. I put a Zenoah 38 gas engine in it and yes it was very nose heavy. I put a lot of tail weight in it and it flew like a dream. The guys at the field loved the way it flew. The landings were a little fast because it was nose heavy, but it flew great. This Roadrunner looks like a kit we bought from Ace. I forgot the name of the kit, but it looks the same with the same engine.

yeah i did find one other gas episode.. was a review on a mustang.. i was shocked.. the name of episode:
      Flite Test - Hangar 9 p-51 mustang MkII PTS - review. Nov 29 2011
other than that only other gas episodes are accidentals.. not of the FT boys doing a review or flying.. which is to bad they had so many people interested in learning about gas..
but iv learn a lot from FT so i can not complain.. plus there foam board planes not so good for gas. LOL.. however, with there new foam.. i say peter time for a challenge.. we want a line nitro plane.. 2 wires 60 feet, cox .49, and the new foam board.. it should work fine and the new foam board being water resilient.., just use some dope to protect it from the exhaust etc its how they protected the tissue paper back in the day.. so why would it not work on the new water resilient foam board. . im learning to use dope now on a balsa rubber band plane im building.. so far using dope is not to bad.. i figure iron on monoko will be harder.. i need to go order a iron and some low heat film.. so i can practice covering foam etc..
im with you id love to see a tutorial series on gas.. even if it was just getting into free flight with a line plane. you can get gas engines so cheap now.. so its not like the project could not be reproduced by the FT community..
i know everyone is pushing elertic and i get it.. but im almost 42 i grew up with gas engines.. my lawn mower was never electric.. even tho sometimes i wish it was hah because my old lawn mower as a kid was such a cold blooded beast. but it made me summer money so what the heck. .

+Chris c the heat generated by an engine is enough to melt or damage/deform foam board. It would also likely be too heavy to be effectively supported by the foam.

Unfortunately the neighbors don't, which is why so many flying fields have been lost in the last 20-30 years:(

Actually, the suggestions were valid. In the episode they commented on the lack of a grounding switch, which is a kill switch on the motor. Pulling the plug wire is a good idea, unless you're ready to start the motor.

Great video! Loved the added behind the scene stuff. I'm an avid electric guy but do like the occasional foray into the gas realm. About the motor, I spent my late teens as a small engine mechanic and can tell you that those two stroke motor carburetors have build in fuel pumps. this is so that they can run at any angle (think of how chainsaws and weed whackers are used).
