- BART patrons and transit enthusiasts had the opportunity to say good bye to the legacy fleet last Saturday afternoon with a celebration event at MacArthur Plaza followed by a final ride to Freemont Station. Here is a look back at the event and what the Legacy Fleet has meant to so many BART riders dating all they way back to opening day in 1972.
The fact that everyone came out to honor these trains is amazing and I love it
they all look challenged
Even if i’m not from there, still, it’s a sad moment that these trains have to go. I used to like these trains so much when i was little. Rest in peace.
That was a very bittersweet day. Glad to attend this ceremony with my friend. The Legacy Fleet will be missed.
I made it a point to ride the BART system as much as possible on my two trips to San Francisco. I am from the Philadelphia, PA area and wanted to see this new advanced transit system. We had two older subway routes in Philadelphia and one newer one in the PATCO high speed line from Philadelphia and Lindenwald, NJ. BART did remind me a bit like our PATCO line in that it crossed a river and ran at high speed on the elevated and at grade on the New Jersey portion of the line. However we did not have the futuristic looking cars like BART had. I am sure the riders will miss the old cars. I hope a few will be preserved at museums so future generations can see them.
Bay Area BART History…🙏🏽Congratulations and continue success!
I really am going to miss the old trains I even remember when they used the old cloth seats these were my childhood!
1:46 😳 What an awesome perspective and such an appropriate goodbye!
That was a fabulously long run for transit equipment.
I got a bike on Bart pass when they first came out with those (you used to need a special pass), and the rules were you had to be in the back of the back car, so I spent a lot of time in those end cars.
Im so disappointed I didn’t get to attend this event because I was mad and frustrated. The legacy train will be missed. R.I.P legacy fleet. 1972-2024. 🙁
1000 likes. I moved to the Bay Area in 1975 and rode BART from the very first day. I've listened to my car-driving friends complain about it all these years. I don't care--it's TRUE LOVE. I love BART. 💙💙💙💗💗💗💗
Grew up with those trains. I sure am going to miss them…
"Over the hills, and all along the way. We're building a dream for tomorrow..."
So sad 😭. I miss old trains
i so wish i couldve been there, but i had work 😭😭😭
BART should be in tsW4 NGL. The new stock and the classic one!
FACTS ❤
I had to look up TSW 4. It means "Train Sim World 4," a train simulator game with real train routes. Some LA Metrolink routes are in it. You must buy the game to see it, but here's a review:

Can BART please save a few Legacy Train cars to run for special occasions in the future? It will be a source of both employee and civic pride to see the old trains running for special occasions like NY MTA does. Seeing them in the museum is just not going to be the same. =(
One can only hope they will preserve a set, but if not, they are giving three cars away for preservation at the Western Railway Museum.
The A car was the best looking subway car ever.
I travel a lot on i80 and I've seen the new Bart cars on the back of trucks kn their way to California
L.A. resident here, but those old trains were so noisy. Going through tunnels, like the trans-bay tube, I had to cover my ears. I once did a Google search on that and a BART representative said the trains are one of the quietest in the U.S. What??? All I could think that he has ridden the trains so much that now he is deaf. The new trains, while not exactly totally quiet, are an improvement. I won't miss the old trains. They just got old and worn out. The trains should have been replaced long ago.
I miss the C-cars the most because of their buzzing sound
are any being preserved?
ren!!!!!!
Love it! When modernity and futurism where prized... Not like today... BART should be fully upgraded to modern standards though if you ask me... Platform screen doors, fully automated trains... That's where the future of transit is... Driverless, silent electric trains!
But they had cloth upholstery and carpeting when they were new.
Me and my friend came from LA to see the retirement, it was a fun event glad to have been there, i will miss the Legacy fleet trains as they were one of my favorite! Also we almost missed the last train that ended the event so im glad me and my friend didnt end up missing it! We was onboard car 1501!
1:35 I met that lady at the BART goodie shop, and I have to expose her, she cut the line 😮
Looks like she would 😂
