If someone were born in slavery, birth certificates were hard to come by. Either an entry in a (former?) slaveowner's record, or an entry in a church record, was the only thing available. Both are obviously subject to examination.
Case in point: Maria do Carmo Gerônimo, former slave in Brazil, whose only record to verify her age was a church baptism (which for record purposes was not enough) in 1871, not to mention whip scars on her back. Slavery in Brazil was outlawed in 1888. She died in 2000.
