Now that is one evil bunch. This movie is a good metaphor for the Lost Cause myth and the evil therein.

I felt that too - the main theme nice, but also the conterpointed bits were unusual for a western. So I checked. It turns out that the score was by the great Ennio Morricone. It's credited at the start of the film to 'Leo Nichols' - but that was one of Morricone's noms-de-plume. Not sure why he did that sometimes.

A great spaghetti western
Great movie with a twist! Alfrd Hitchcock would be happy with this one!!
This is one my favorite of Corbucci’s westerns. I like Navajo Joe and Django for the pulpy style but I think The Mercenary and this have the best plot and casts.

Discovering old classic westerns you've never seen before is awesome,like this one i've never even heard of before. The late 60's created soo many great classics. Old movies like this were so exciting watching as a kid for me. ////////// Good quality,no huge arrogant channel logo on the screen, i think i will subscribe to your channel.

Great movie about how low people can sink to over money and greed and useless causes. In the end,you can't take it with you,and usually wind up with nothing.

Norma Bengell is simply one extremely beautiful woman - I had no idea she was Brazilian. As for the film, Italian Director Sergui Corbucci keeps it nice and twisty, on the back of competent performances from Benguell, Cotten and the rest. Tks for sharing

Esse filme é uma obra de arte. Direção impecável de Sergio Corbucci, trilha sonora fenomenal de Ennio Morricone, elenco fenomenal (com destaque para Joseph Cotten no papel do malvado coronel Jonas). Um dos melhores faroestes spaghetti, acima da média.

In hindsight, big mistake giving them American sounding names to try and trick the audience. "Nobody's ever heard of this Ennio Morricone guy, let's call him Leo Nichols instead!" then Fistfull of Dollars comes out the same year...
Also, Shin Godzilla's like my favourite movie of the last decade btw, just thought it worth mentioning :)

Great plot and very meaningful considering what the so called USA (North) has turned into. And that wagon was the same one that was used for Bill Carson in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Amazing! Westerns made in Italy really are the best.

As Jimmy Durante used to say, “ Everybody wants to get into the act!” Cavalry, banditos, Indians, brawling cowboys, Confederate renegades, crusty miners, beautiful women, just the whole roster of Old West baddies and characters. Don’t think a box load of paper money is going to save the South in any case. Someone gave Joseph Cotton a poor review on his acting in this one, but I thought he was just right for the part.
Creatively brilliant plot. Really amazingly well-conceived for a B Spaghetti picture!

Interesting that the title gets its name from the Hellbender salamander that are common in Tennessee and surrounding states, hence the lizard emblem.
