      They are. Every corner of the planet has apex predators. Salties, gators, lions, cougars,wolves, coyotes, tigers, various sharks... Anywhere you are, there are apex predators. If you ever get a creepy feeling, listen to it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
      I feel sheepish for putting coyotes in here... But a female jogger on a park jogging trail in Nova Scotia was killed by one or more coyotes. Even coyotes can kill an unprepared person.

      I have had more than enough of bears. Luckily I have always been aware to watch for bears. Growing up in Kittery, Maine I have had close encounters with bears, fishers and one cougar who ran across our background and up a tree thanks to my hound Ginger who made sure the cat went to the very top of biggest tree in our backyard. That was at 3:30’in the afternoon. I know because we just got home from school.

    Im from Ontario Canada. Commenting on 3rd storey, I'm a believer that people should never go hiking or hunting alone. People stand a better chance of surviving a bear attack if hunting or hiking with a partner. Im a firm believer of "When traveling in bear country, be prepared for anything" it could very well save your life.

      My hiking group was pursued by a bear. I never saw it. I had kept to the rest to prevent an at risk woman from getting separated. She was sedentary prior to this, and had also given birth about 6 weeks before. When the leader ordered us to turn around she was behind me. My focus became on being loud and thus heading off us being boxed in. W think it was a territorial dispute, as the Bear was feeding in a berry patch. Two of our women were menstruating, and that might've added confusion.
      We sighted another bear with cubs about 1/2 hour later. We gave them room, but needed to cross their trail to get to the rest of our group and the vehicles.

    First story - predatory black - Alaskan here who’s studied both black and brown, and black bears have shown an usual propensity to predatory attacks. I am extremely careful of them around SE where I live. We have a den behind our house and the bears including families of them use our 120 stairs to our garage for their own movement so I usually call down to ensure they haven’t seen any activity before I head out. We have a large black male in the area right now. Just be careful, everyone. Love your stories, Addicus!

      I spent 8 years working in a remote camp at bistcho lake, north west of Zama city. My understanding was trouble bears from jasper national park get moved to this area. I had quite a few meetings with bears in the area. Most were skittish and ran away from my quad or chopper. A few came right to the camp and through the bear fence behind camp. Bear baiting on my leases was also something I had to be aware of.

    • @nbooi

      I also never saw a single Brown bear. Alot of wolves and lynx, a few wolverines but no cougars or grizzlies.

    • @Patriot-rising
      @Patriot-rising ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am a little surprised any bears were relocated to an area where there is known bear baiting.
      We usually relocate any problem animals well outside of an area known to be areas where human interactions could occur. But here in Ak it is pretty hard to keep everyone safe of course. And sometimes I have to explain the range of some of these bears.
      Curious about your bear proof fencing... UDAP or Electrofence? Perma net?
      Reason I ask is because we do run into folks of course wanting to know which one works best. Usually we suggest Electrofence. But I hear UDAP is pretty good as well. Do you run a bear fence annually? If so any suggestions I could pass along would be deeply appreciated.
      Being it is your property I take it you are also a guide? You do not have to answer but I assure you it is just a question because of your statement. I am always interested with what a guide has to say or even a land owner or lease .
      The information I gather is more that can be added to experience for my job. Different terrain and food sources are a huge part of understanding bear activity.
      Thank you in advance.

    • @Patriot-rising
      @Patriot-rising ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Quite often you will not see a brown. But I would look for signs of activity in your area anyways.
      One of the main reasons I landed this position years ago was my ability to track even in a bad weather situation.. As you know weather can be unforgiving but understanding the animal your are tracking habits you can usually pick up the trail again.
      One of the pucker moments I have had working with large and toothy critters was actually on Kodiak.
      It is astonishing that while we were or I was tracking we being as quiet as humanly possible were unable to move in relative silence. But I noticed the tracks, stride and path the bear had all the sudden changed I knew we had alerted this boar and being the kind teddy bears they are circled in behind us and was actively stalking us. As we entered an open field I started to watch my 6. And sure enough there he was. The bears in Kodiak are actually good size animals as you I am sure know. But surprisingly he moved in behind us and we did NOT hear a sound. We actually later on started calling him a tactically efficient fur ball.
      I have had other close calls but nothing like that one in Kodiak.
      I have been involved in a few recovery situations where humans were involved in a predatory or territory attack. I have also been on scene of 2 sows protecting their cubs .
      What I try to tell people is to leave an area when they see a bear especially a sow with cubs. I am also asked what is a safe distance. I usually throw in a crack shot and say to remain safe leave the state. No one ever finds that very funny.... But when I explain how fast q bear can close the distance from 40 , 70 and 100 yards they look at me as if I am making stuff up. At 40 yards you would barely have enough time to grab your canister of bear spray. Bears especially ones that wish to render what they consider a threat charge you , most of the time shock sets in. Fear follows and clumsy hands are doing their best to take action.
      I am also asked what I think about bear spray. I personally do not like it for a few reasons. The distance from you to the bear before the spray is effective. Also in stressful situations you will not take the time to notice if you are spraying into the wind or you have bushes or tree with low hanging branches or anything that can deflect the bear spray back upon you. And if you happen to take a hit from that very bear spray you now are the one trying to recover from the effects. Which of course usually works out for the bear..
      Like many here I carry a Glock G20 and a rifle or shotgun. The people I work with use a tranq. But if a bear is too close and charging at full speed even if you have to shoot them they can still follow through at hit you rather hard. A 10mm like the Glock I carry has 15 rounds and when you are in your back that pistol is your only lifeline..
      Before anyone thinks poorly about this statement. I will tell you my number one priority is to keep humans as well as animals safe. I have had to shoot one bear and I live with that to this very day. I truly hate that I had to do this.
      Anyway look at me rambling on like a madman. Haha.

    After moving from Montreal, Canada with my small family, I lived for 6 years in Whitehorse, Yukon back in the late 1900’s, in blissful ignorance of the dangers inherent in sharing the land with the local wildlife. By the grace of God, we survived unharmed and enjoyed the experience immensely. But now, watching videos such as this series, it makes me very aware of the consequences we had been unknowingly risking all along through our lackadaisical attitude. Worse, it makes me realize that even the locals (the aboriginal native people excepted), were almost just as badly lackadaisical.
    All this to say, it strikes me that local authorities and/or employers at least in northerly areas ought to give serious thought to raising awareness of these things amongst the population.

    • @korolr

      @@JK-lp6uw The "awareness-making" part was thoroughly absent, during my 6 years in the Yukon. But that was in the 1970’s to 1980’s; maybe it’s changed since then. Yet somehow, I doubt it. There are always higher priorities - until one happens to be the victim.
      What more should be done? Well, I’m no expert; but I propose there are better ways than suggesting that folks carry a tin can with ball bearings, to scare away grizzlies in the wild. (In my time, these trinkets were offered in some shops on Main St in Whitehorse. No kidding. Probably in nearby Skagway and Haines, Alaska, too.)

    As much as people are terrified by grizzly bears, black bear territory overlaps human territory more than brown bears. This means there are more interactions with black bears than the Grizzly. There are no brown bears in my area (Southern NJ) but we have coyotes and black bears, with more sightings all the time. I haven't seen a bear in the wild, but as the reports of sightings creep closer to home, I keep a sharp eye out, JUST in case. (The coyotes in my area have a reputation for being big, traveling in larger packs, and and showing less fear of humans.)

    I think I know what drove the bear killed by the ax to attack, even though there was no real threat to her cubs. I think it's the hormones that drive the mothers nuts to protect their young, not the logic of how much threat the young are under. I had this happen with a dear that had just given birth. She was out to pound me to death and wouldn't let up. I slowly backed down a 1/3 mile down a trail to the trail head, with her attacking every step of the way no matter now non-threatening I made myself (no noise or yelling, just walking slowly backward). She charged me repeatedly and would have knocked me off my feet and given me a real pounding except I had a heavy wooden walking stick. I just put it out in front of me and she rammed herself into it several times. That must have hurt, and I don't know how it didn't really hurt her. It kept her off me (thankfully) but I was astonished at the grief she put herself through and how far she followed me, attacking all the way.
    She was spotted the next day but had calmed down, probably since the fawn was stronger, up and walking. But I sure set her off the day before, not because I was threatening especially but because I shared the same forest with her and she did not like that. Sometimes mothers just react.

      Good point. As a new mother back in 1993, my emotions were aII over the pIace, same with the birth of my 2nd son in 2000. One minute I was happier than ever, the next, tearful and the next, protective to the point I would've destroyed anyone who tried to harm them with my bare hands. 😂 Hormones change drastically after giving birth in humans, the hormones that heIp maintain a pregnancy are replaced with hormones from breastfeeding and hormones that heIp your body to heal and return to normaI. It's a bit of an emotional roIIer coaster even for the most even tempered.
      So it makes a Iot of sense that animaI mothers couId act totaIIy different from day to day, even hour to hour, depending on whatever circumstances are in pIay with her young.
      ExceIIent point and one I didn't think of. 👍

    • @sharonshea3261
      @sharonshea3261 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree. The deer wasn't even an animal that is known to attack like that. But she was like insane to get rid of me, regardless of what her plowing into my walking stick might have hurt her. I think bear sows would be even more so because of the harm a boar could do to her cubs. Defensive hormones can make for some seriously aggressive mamas. @@metalmamasue3680

      @mrkipling2201 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metalmamasue3680that sounds similar to people who are withdrawing from opiates, strange as that comparison may seem. Your emotions are all over the place. One minute you're laughing, the next minute you're crying your eyes out and then you can get aggressive after that. It's due to the body producing loads of endorphins when someone is addicted actively to opiates. When someone stops taking opiates, their body still produces the same amount of endorphins, which is an amount that's more than the body needs. After a while, the endorphin production goes down to a normal level, which is when the person starts to feel better.

    The first attack , the black bear was obviously treating the three humans as food or game. But before you think this bear is man eater could have the noise of the drilling have something to do with the attacks other then the obvious of bring a food (humans) source into the bear’s territory. Could the noise of the drilling scared off the bear’s natural food source ? Or could the smells of the human brought the bear to the area?

So Carrol was “mauled to death” not simply mauled. More facts please. If you don’t have more facts, research or don’t tell them.

    Great stories! This is the first time that I’ve seen these videos. I have read every bear book that’s out there in the past thirty years. You couldn’t pay me enough to go out into the wilderness alone. Not even NOT alone! 🤣 I’m a New Englander who grew up in Ct. and transferred to my job in Vermont. Then I retired to the eastern Panhandle of West Virginia,(near Maryland and Virginia) This area is totally different than the rest of West Virginia. Just watching this last episode which occurred in West Virginia, I was disgusted by those West Virginians who would take a bunch of hounds to go chase a bear until it went up a tree! Leave the wildlife alone! And stop endangering your dogs! Talk about stupid! Hound pursuit of bears should be illegal!

    Although there are black bears here in the Pacific Northwest, your chances of running into a cougar are better.
    As civilization encroaches more and more into their domain, sightings and attacks are becoming more common. I live along the Columbia River and used to do a lot of hiking in the Columbia River gorge, shooting pictures of the many waterfalls.
    The trails cut through the hills, so there's plenty of high vantage points for these predators to sit and wait.
    I always had a backpack filled with my camera gear that I wore high, protecting my neck.
    I also carried a .357 Magnum Revolver.
    Thankfully I never had to use it.

    Growing up in northern Ontario, one rule my mother had was that no matter what we were doing, riding our horses, picking berries or just running around and playing in the bush or pastures, we had to have at least one dog with us at all times. My mother raised St. Bernard dogs and German Shepherd dogs during my childhood. She was strict about this rule. She said that the dogs would not be able to kill the bear but they would instinctively attack and bark at one, giving us time to get away. I also raised my children in rural northern Ontario and I enforced the same rule. If you're venturing off then you must always take at least one dog with you.
    Those dogs definitely saved her life that day.

      @@avelinaosborne32all the propaganda around guns makes us jump thru hoops and is very expensive to own . This has put many in danger. Bear spray imo has the ability to stop an attack but the bears often returns. I totally agree with conserving our precious wildlife but once they become predatory they will continue to attack. Bear stay is often thrown in a back pack as an afterthought. Bears are wicked fast and often the victim does not have time to use bear spray. So carrying both spray and gun and being trained to appropriately use either is ideal. Sadly cartoons have influenced our idea of cute lil teddy bear!

    Oh and as for your questions in the first story. Yes black bears could very easily relocate due to grizzly activity. The black Bear obviously considered humans to be a good source. As for the following attack. I believe the answer is both a predatory as well as protecting his kill.
    As for protection in this situation. I would rely on a firearm over bear spray all the time. In heavy brush using bear spray could in fact incapacitate you instead of the bear. As for this being rare. Well I am not so sure I agree. There have been multiple attacks over the years where a bear decides humans are food. And also protect there kill from other humans that happen upon the kill site.
    When anyone enters bear country they should be always checking their surroundings. This bear had no issues with taking on two humans. As with other situations where this behavior has taken place I feel is due to population growths which limits their hunting range.
    I also feel these attacks upon humans because of limited range also pushes bears into more populated areas which humans frequent. This will change the bears behavior by taking away their natural fear of humans. Especially where humans are taking away habitat in order to build homes. We are actually moving into the bears territory. It is not uncommon to see bears such as grizzlies prey upon black bears.
    Bear populations are growing as well as the human population. We are on a doomed path where one or the other have to give. Unfortunately it is usually the bear that loses in this situation.
