    So...if you're super familiar with the first video in this series, you may reach a point in this video where you raise an eyebrow. I claim that in the first video I mentioned an elf called Galadhorn, but I didn't. Honestly, that first video wasn't my best, so, in the next month or so, I'll be uploading a new season 1 video that gives greater details on the beginning of this imagined story. And in that video, I'll explain where Galadhorn (and a few other things) came from.

      I love these videos but would still really be interested if you did a breakdown of the actual rings of power show comparing it to Tolkien and breaking down the major differences. I know you've mentioned in a previous video that you couldn't even watch the show, but it would be fascinating to hear what you have to say about the show overall with all its flaws and failures.

    So I went through a binge of these videos today while I was working. I listened to them in the background while I was filing paperwork. I will say this. The biggest difference between your script and the Amazon script is that I see a genuine love and respect for the work of Tolkien. You're not changing his work just to suit your own personal needs. You work around the established lore and only add things when necessary. That in my opinion is way more respect to Tolkien than Amazon ever gave. I'd rather listen to your TH-cam videos then watch ROP any day of the week. You sir have my respect.

      @@tolkienuntangled Appreciated? Foolish man. :) You gave us an audio book to listen to about the Second Age. Tragically I don't think that ANY film adaptation will reach this level of storytelling EVER again. That industry long expelled the last of the talents from their cult, the remainders are ghouls and carrion eaters dismembering and devouring the last remaining great imaginary worlds still more or less intact.
      The Amazon Abomination will be forgotten faster than it was made.
      Your alternative story will live very long and will give joy and entertainment to the lovers of the lore.
      I have a humble suggestion. Once you finish your story, you shall take the audio from it, and EDIT it as a real audio book. The story only. You have plenty material to work on. You shall patch up with some extra audio material the holes left by the cut out explanations, self arguments and references to movie rights.
      The results would be EPIC, and I would PAY high for it, as I am sure many of the listeners of your stories would also.

    I really like the Ulfang/Bor type of situation with the Haradrim leaders. Also I imagine Elendil and Durins introduction to each other could be centered around the fact that Elendil wields Narsil. Elendil could pay a compliment to the Dwarves that only the greatest smiths of their race could forge such a weapon, and Durin claiming that he deems Elendil great enough of a man that he is deserving of the blade. Easy way to establish respect between the two kings.

    Your stories and vision for these five seasons truly transmits your love of Tolkien and his world. I’ve been enthralled by each video (which the 2 hours always feel like only 30 minutes has gone by 😂). Your description of this battle and the arrival of the high kings was superb, I could practically hear and envision it!!
    I really hope some day we might be able to see something come close to what you’ve told throughout these videos. I’d argue they almost perfectly capture Tolkien’s themes and are far better than anything Amazon could put out on their own.

    This is absolutely fantastic, Rainbow Dave! I've listened to the whole series and how I wish it was a real TV series to watch! You're a great stolyteller - it's gripping, it's touching and it's absolutely believable. Your grasp on the lore is unparalleled too. From the very first scene with Elrond and Elros I knew this was going to be something special. I also have to applaud how you built your female characters - they’re distinct, well-defined, complex, multi-layered and play important roles in the story in a way that compliments the lore and adds to the depth of the story. I also love the exploration of Harad - shows that it's perfectly possible to explore characters of diverse backgrounds with differing perspectives in Tolkien's universe when you understand the demographics and geography of said universe. There's a lot that could be done in this regard while still being faithful to the lore. I understand where the changes you've introduced are coming from (e.g. the Woodland Elves in the Last Alliance, though it pains me to have Thranduil's role changed a bit again, but your version works smoothly and effectively and we don’t need too many tertiary characters). Do you plan to ever continue this series? I'm sure everyone would love to listen to more of it. Hats off to you, mellon!

    It's easy to reflect upon a series once all has been said and done, and pick it apart with criticism. It's another thing entirely, to get ahead of it and produce a story bearing in mind the constraints that production houses use as an excuse for not being able to deliver what could've been. What Dave has done, is quite literally hand the series the world needs to the producers, so masterfully. Without criticism, without dividing the fandom, without nitpicking or leaving a trace of negativity towards anyone, be it fans or film makers. I applaud you Rainbow Dave. You've gone from being my favorite Tolkienian TH-cam Channel to being my favourite TH-cam Channel. Prof. Tolkien certainly would be proud of you for dawning his colours. That'd be awesome but a MAMMOTH project. It'd have to be like the MCU and Disney+ Marvel shows. A bunch of miniseries and movies tied together. The fall of Melkor, Feanor, his sons, the Silmarils, Beren & Luthien, the children of Hurin, the rise of men, the rise of dwarves, Fingolfin, Earendil & Elwing, Elrond & Elros, Galadriel, Gondolin, the battles, etc.

      My feeling is that it shouldn’t (and probably won’t) ever be done for real, but my imaginary version is a film trilogy of the three great tales, with most of the other relevant information given in the prologues.

    • @timitnyre5831
      @timitnyre5831 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Justin Crane I've given it a lot of thought and I feel like a series starting with the awakening of the Elves and culminating in the Dagor Aglareb and the start of the Siege of Angband followed by a string of movies about the Great Tales and culminating in a Voyage of Earendil tale would be the way to go. The series, since it follows Elven characters wouldn't have too much turnover in the casts, while switching to movies once Men arrive on the scene would accommodate the greater turnover in casts. I'm not sure how to handle the Dagor Braggolach and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad though. Movies? Mini series?

    • @justincrane8825
      @justincrane8825 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timitnyre5831 I like that approach, but I guess my issue with adapting the book is that much of it is drawn in such broad strokes that it would require a lot of invention of scenes and dialogue to place the characters in more of a direct context than a historical one, and that doesn’t totally sit well with me. Of course one could say the same for the Second Age stories we’re commenting on, so I guess it all just comes down to how much you want to see those details filled out by someone other than Tolkien.
      In a perfect world it could all work together as an epic and beautiful complementary multimedia saga, but in the real world I no longer have faith in any studio to ever produce anything good, so I guess we may as well let our imaginations flourish under the ideal circumstances detached from economic and creative realities, since it’s unlikely to ever come to fruition anyway.

    The fascinating thing about the war of the last alliance is that if you have only watch the LOTR movies then you think about this war as a war in which elves and men (dwarves werent mentioned in the intro) allied themselves out of necessity but if you listen to all the facts given in all of tolkiens worls regarding the second age you find that the last alliance has very deep roots and meaning. This is a war in which descendants of all the major players in the 1st age come into play and "renew" past oaths such as the oath of ever lasting friendship between Finrod and the race of men also the dunedain are descendants of the men who fought alongside the valaar and eldar in the war of wrath but the most wholesome connection is the fact that the ring of barahir has come into play in all 3 ages of arda.

    Hi David, just want to add my two cents’ worth which amounts to basically a massive THANK YOU for doing this! 🙏 I have enjoyed & now enjoy again for the umpteenth time this series you have masterfully crafted. (I have also delved deep into many of your other Tolkien musings). Of course you’d accept no credit but defer & bow to the late great Master J.R.R.T., however your own scholarly skills in navigating his complex lore & crafting routes through are exceptional. Honestly, your storytelling of a possible Rings Of Power series creates images in my brain and makes synapses fire to such an extent that it all adds up to a much richer and more satisfying take-away than I get from the current Amazon offerings. I don’t wish to destroy them, there is indeed much to enjoy, the sets, costumes, music, effects, general mood are in places magnificent, but by the same token much feels out of place & the general bulldozing of canon to make way for cheap solutions, zeitgeist tropes & eye-candy I find very disappointing. Given the depth, subtlety & mastery of the source material I cannot quite fathom why such deviations & perversions have happened, but hey… J.R.R. would be honoured to have you proffer such an adaptation. (I’m left wondering why you weren’t consulted in the first instance?) Whatever, thank you again & wishing you well. ☀🌊🌲✨💫

The themes are so true to the Legendarium, the characters that are supposed to be epic and likeable live up to their reputations, and the stakes are gripping. I especially appreciated the highlighting of parallels, which is one of my favorite things about the Legendarium. Isildur echoing his ancestor's relationship to Elrond, Galadriel and Gil-galad reembodying their earlier actions, etc. I really liked how the brown lands that were the entwives' gardens mirror Anfauglith. I hadn't made that connection before. Absolutely worth the wait! Thanks

    Though you take a lot of license here - very creative - I like your idea of a tribe of Bears and Men. Long ago, when I learned that Elwing had 2 brothers who were "lost" in the downfall of Doriath, I theorized that perhaps they had been taken in by Bears and became the forBears of the Beornings. It seemed natural to think that since Elwing was granted power to change her form to that of a great Swan, it didn't seem impossible for her brothers to become bears - the blood of the Maier still running so strong in them. Now I know it was supposedly Ulmo who had and used that power... but I think it is just as likely that they maintained that Maian power and just needed to be taught or prompted to use it in some way. Taken in by bears and then mating with human bear friends, their offspring would inherit mortality as the twins might have died from injury protecting their tribe. Since Elwing married Elendil - the half-elven - their offspring were eventually given the choice. So I absolutely LOVE your idea for a bear clan. I think you went off base with the palantiri in your last episode, as I don't think Sauron had one to use until they sacked Minas Ithil. He had far sight... as did many of the elves, even Elrond, so they could have simply tapped into that or sent messages through the beasts. I wouldn't get into the palantiri until they were aligned in middle earth. Cirdan doing this seems strange... but Galadriel could have. Tokein even said that the only equal to Feanor was perhaps Galadriel (so much of what she had been doing should revolve around her practicing her craft). Cirdan specialiazed in ship building... and not so much stuff like the palantiri. Anyway, I'm LOVING this so far. I agree with one of the comments I read that someone should give you a billion dollars and tell you to get started :)

      Unfortunately they dont want to tell Tolkien's story. They want to stand atop Tolkien's legacy to push their own messages. Not only that but they hire complete losers as show runners, writers and "Tolkien expert" consultants. Something fishy is going on in Holkywood for them not to take advantage of the financial opportunity of making a faithful adaptation of Tolkien's work and every other popular franchise reboot they have tanked lately

    I think an animated series would be much better suited for adapting the Silmarillion, similar to Vinland Saga or Castlevania. Don't have to worry about the casting being screwed up, and the overall aesthetic would be easier to capture. You can create the perfect visual design for each character and find the perfect voice actor. The fight scenes would be better. There's just so much more potential with an animated series.

    Huge thanks on giving an example of how this story can be told and still integrate what Tolkien actually wrote.
    While considering what Amazon could have done differently, I also thought that there's a good point in the 3rd Age they could have used. The Fall of Anor and its surrounding stories in Gondor and Lóthlorien would have made for a great story to adapt as well. But probably not by Amazon...

    Ok so. This is a humble plea for one of your next video series. An adaptaion of the first age. It doesent have to be from the begining of time, but rather that of the silmarils. My setup would be:
    First season: starts when melkor is released from His 3 ages of inprissonment, and covers the whole slaying of the trees and flight of the noldor, up until feanors death, and then the first season ends with fingolfins host comming over the grinding ice and the race of men sturing under the first sun rise.
    The second season covers events up to the battle of sudden flame and fingolfin going off. The season would focus on meathros and fingon, fingolfin and also cover turgon and finarfin and their hidden city building. There is ofcourse so much to cover in thise 400 years.
    Then comes the first stand alone mini series, beren and luthien, ofcourse describing beren and luthien.
    Season three is the union of meathros and should focus heavily on him and fingon and then dive deep into the despair that takes him after they loose the battle of unnumbered tears, and the oath, that would later lead such a valiant character to commit some heavy kinslaying. Also deal with hurin and huor.
    The next stand alone mini show woould be of turin turambar and the fall of nargothrond or the children of hurin.
    The next would be of tuor and the fall of gondolin, getting in that obligatory high king of the noldor death
    The final an fourth season would either be thingol and the silmaril and him getting shanked if that issent fit into another season. Or go straight to dior and the silmaril and the sons of feanor attack on menegroth and the heavens, ending with earendil going to valinor and then we follow our remaing big characters as they escape the war of wrath unto middle earth, and meadhros and maglors fates and then thats it. Perfect tie in to the second age show. (There would ofc also be a very charming and depressing storyline of meadhros and maglor trying to care for elrond and elros.) And trying to do the war of warth sounds like a horrible cigi ide, so stay grounded and with our characters.
    When people talk about adapting the first age the most common idé is 1. Animated to depict all the crazy stuff 2. Oneoff episodes going over ex beren and luthienand other major stories inside the legendarium and not having a naritive but instead a collection of stories, which I think would greatly deminsih the absoult brethtaking beauty of the naretive and how complete and deep the silmarillion is. There are about 100 characters and they all have compleate arcs and they are all beautiful and heartbreaking. Ofcourse adapting beren and luthien without the wider backround on the war of the jewels and the sons of feanor and the oath would just be an L.
    This also operates of the asumption that you have an amazon style budget and all the rights (dream world)
    The first scen of the show could be a shot of the two trees and then it slowly zooms out into a room where feanor is gazing at them through a window (hehe heavy symbolism) while he is standing portrait with his father and half brothers (him on the right and his brothers on the left) for some painting. And then you go from there.
    I dont think you should try and start from the begining. 1. Ainurlindone would be real challanging to depict (especially in live action)
    2. It is such a gain for a story when there is an air of mistery for the veiwer. You dont need to explain everything, instead the imagination does wonders. And the greater loore surounding it will ofc often be reffernced and explained in diolog and by compitent writers.
    Comming to the big time jumps. 1. They are imortal elves for the most part, they will look the same. 2. When melkor is released at the end of the first episode, all the major players are born and grown up, its like 500 years since the birth of galadriel and fingolfins youngest, so we are all good. The stroy would still span quite some time, but as you said in your first episode of this video series and as you yourself demonstrated with thise videos. If you just have a writer that is compitent and understands tolkien and the asignment, the vast timespan is not a problem.
    In my opinion the 1 age is tolkiens peak, god damn its good. And with someone as good and invested as you, a faithful adaptaion could be great. Anyway, this was all a bit of a tangent, what i really want to know is how you would adapt it. Pleace aquihest to my request. I know a thought out version from you would be great and would satiate my imagionation for years.
    Apolegies for the bad spelling this is not my first languige and im drunk at an early christmas cceleration, I just saw the video dropped and had to dropp my hearts deepest desire early so that you would hopefully see it. I think it's a solid outline.
      I always imagined the first age show beginning like this:
      An epic prologue but told by a mother to her young son, as a story... So far in the depths of time it would already be myth to elves. The song of the Valar and the discord of Melkor, the forming of the world and the breaking of the lamps, the retreat of the Valar and the riding of Orome to find the elves and their migration to Valinor. And the imprisoning of Melkor. The child we learn is Feanor, and his saddened mother teaches him about the treachery of Melkor, and the pride of his father's House.
      After the title credits roll, we see an adult Feanor returning across the high seas after years of travel around Arda. Upon his return, he hears from his son Maedros of the trial of Melkor, who may be forgiven by the Valar and set free.
      The first season involves the political corruption of Melkor, the death of Finwe, the oath of Feanor and yes, finishing with the death of Feanor at the hands of the balrogs, knowing secretly that they will Never win their war by force, and realising in anguish his mistake. Too late, however, the host of Fingolfin arrive across the grinding ice, vowing for revenge.
      Season two, in my view, would concern the seven sons of Feanor, and the politics of the other Noldor and Thingol/Melian. Season 2 ends with the battle of sudden flame and the fall of Fingolfin in his duel with Morgoth.
      Season 3 would concern the stories of men, and the sons of Fingolfin and Finarfin. And can end with Beren and Luthien's story (several episodes).
      Season four can include then the kin slayings and the fall of Doriath, of Gondolin, and Nargothrond, - with Earandil searching for Valinor, and the Elwin with the Silmaril hunted to the cliffs where she throws herself to the sea and is resurrected.
      Two episodes for the host of the Valar and the war of Wrath. With the last episode covering the final kin slaying and the fate of the last two of Feanor's sons.
      It's possible. It's doable. And however it is cut for episodic television, it could be so grand and epic.

    • @jakobplobeck8006
      @jakobplobeck8006 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JackChurchill101 a few things, we seem to have simular idees. 1. Feanors mother dies giving birth to him. 2. There was no travel on the high seas of arda for the noldor. Rather he would walk aman with his family. But thats not inportant im sure you just added some dramtic flair. You also seemd ti have left out the nirneath arnoediad in between season 3 and four. (But again you said thatt you could elaborate more, so thats probebly what you mean.) I guess the part i dont like is that its too short:) we have all this material, 4 seasons seems to little. (Fully aware that mine too was 4 seasons, but with three independat mini series for the stories of men released in between the seasons.
      Of this just sounded like pointless nittpkcking to you im sorry. But i really would love talking öore about it, you get so many specific sences in your head and how you would like to see them. Like for a example. I would have the first episdoe of the second season start just with a high up view over a big plane with some faint hills on the horizon. It lingers on this and we hear faint breathing. Then it cuts and the story begins, the next episode would start the exakt same way, but the breathing voice would would quitly humm a faint song in its broken indistinguishable voice. And then finaly at the end of the second episode fingon would go on his rescue mission and when he is singing defiently by thangordrim he would be answerd by that same voice and fingon would eventually reach some vantuge point were he could see maedhros dangeling from high up the mountain. Just some random shit you cant stop thinking about
