  • *You can hate on the video if you want, but please remember there were 100s of people watching the waves while the lifeguards did their best to rescue 2 people. I didn’t see the person way out off the pier while taping this. As a spectator I was in NO position to rescue anyone myself nor expected to.*
Huge 15-20 feet waves at the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA on July 24, 2009. I caught a lifeguard rescue as a swimmer was trying to come back to shore but was getting pummeled by the waves behind him. The waves reached the height of the actual pier spaying onlookers toward the end of the pier. It was some crazy stuff.

I was there, on the Balboa pier, watching this whole scene unfold, and it was unreal. The video just doesn't capture the enormity of the surf. After reading several posts below about lifeguards and swimmers, I wanted to give my perspective. I grew up in OC and have been body surfing for 40 years, including Balboa Beach in this video. Balboa Beach is typically a shore break, and never breaks this far out. The size and energy of the waves was incredible. I tried to go out the day before (much smaller), and just waist deep felt like you were standing in a blender.

Anybody noticed the other dude in the back that also occured to be stick in the waves and seemed to be in a lot worse condition or was that just a surfer?

Having grown up near the ocean and swimming in the OR/WA coast my entire life I had my closest drowning experience just last year. Always check your tides (going out or coming in), check with local guards, ranger stations, any resource possible, for recent updates, and always, always, ALWAYS underestimate your ability. Because if the ocean wants you, she will take you.

The Life guard was petrified to go and get the second guy who was probably praying he would save him. I hope he was ok 🙏
