Nothing can beat without Jimmy McDonald. One of the many SFX guy at Disney for many decades along with Treg Brown at WB for their “Looney Tunes” and “Merrie Melodies” and Hanna-Barbera for tons of sound effects used for these cartoons.
I was able to get some items from MacDonald's sfx collection and these are the following: Growling bear, Hook's headache, horse hooves & squeaky footsteps.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I remember Disney Family Album WAY back when The Disney Channel was still new (and still good) and this episode with Jimmy MacDonald is my favorite!
17:01 Jimmy MacDonald doing Dopey's crying is definitely true, but the confusing part about MacDonald doing Dopey's squeaky hiccuping is that while it sounds similar to Dumbo's hiccuping (also done by MacDonald) when he gets drunk in Dumbo (1941), it also sounds slightly similar to the hiccups of Hortense the Ostrich (voiced by Pinto Colvig) in Donald's Ostrich (1937). There is a video of Adriana Caselotti (who voiced Snow White) giving a tour of her house in 1992. In it she mentions that Colvig did the hiccups. Either... A. This might imply that MacDonald's hiccups weren't used in the final version of the film. *B. She might just be misremembering and assumed that Colvig did the hiccups instead of MacDonald based on the fact that some of Colvig's characters like Goofy having a hiccup-like laugh.* Links: th-cam.com/video/Nttag8HAefg/w-d-xo.htmlt=4m49s (Colvig as Dopey) th-cam.com/video/q9PN36q_7po/w-d-xo.html#t=1m02s (Colvig as Hortense) Keith Scott's book Cartoon Voices of the Golden Age, 1930-70 Volume 2 (2022) states that Colvig did Dopey's various vocal effects and MacDonald provided the character's miscellaneous noises.
Yeah there's lots of confusion and speculation between many roles from MacDonald, Colvig, Clarence Nash, and Candy Candido. For example, the Saturday Morning Rewind video on Candido had tons of animal noises and only like one turned out to actually be from Candido. The rest were from MacDonald and possibly one or two were from Nash. There are just so many sources that conflict each other on all that. This also makes me wonder if some of the very high-pitched character voices from the Colvig video were actually from MacDonald, namely the flamingo from Alice in Wonderland.
Don’t forget Mel Blanc (The Man Of A Thousand Voices) because some of the animal sounds in some of the Disney movies and shorts they think that was really Mel blanc but was Actually from Clarence Nash.
"A cartoon without sound is hardly a cartoon at all..." I would only wonder if Buddy Ebson (or the series/episode writer) has ever heard of silent films.
@@AnimationNation2004 Yep, and whatever calls for sound effects would have been recreated through the music played on the organ/keyboard...assuming that's all the live music for movie theaters required.
“My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” was the one show that mostly used Jimmy McDonald sound effects that it was borrowed from Disney, but they allowed permission to use most of Disney sound effects that Jimmy McDonald was used for MLP G4.
His sound effect was heard in many non-Disney medias notably, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, The PowerPuff Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants, Pokemon anime (although it was heard in a few episodes), Tom And Jerry, We Bare Bears, Barney & Friends, Sid the Science Kid, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Loud House, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, Sonic X, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Hey Arnold!, Pingu, Sesame Street, Teen Titans, etc, R.I.P James MacDonald.

Wow, both a man in charge of all of the sound effects in Disney films, and was also Mickey Mouse's second voice actor. This just goes to show that not all the artists at Disney were the ones that could draw.
It was the same sound effect that was used for KOVR-TV where the McClatchy Bee was the station’s mascot during sign-offs and sign-ons during the 1950’s.
If Jimmy MacDonald was still alive, he would have been 85 years in 1991 (if it hadn’t been for that he died 3 months prior to his birthday), 90 in 1996, 95 in 2001, 100 in 2006, 105 in 2011, 110 in 2016 and 115 in 2021. And most recently in 2024, he would have been 118 years old.
That has to be the horse gallop sound effects which was introduced in “Snow White” in 1937, but reused countless times, including “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic”.
The Sonovox. A very early version of the Vocoder. The way it worked was you would play a source sound, in this case a train whistle, and play it through a record player. You would then use the 2 small speakers (sometimes there was only 1) to place against your throat and silently speak, resulting in you speaking as the sound that's being played. Today there's now a portable version called the Bozavox and there's some being sold on eBay.
I had the privelidge of having dinner with Mr MacDonald. He described how he did mant sound effects before synthesizers. The best evening of my life.
Nice! Care to share the magic? I've always been inspired by his theatrical works in Disney
