  • How to turn wooden balls. How to combine both the lathe and the drill press to make wooden balls. In this woodworking video we see how to set both woodworking tools to make the wood balls using a hole saw. Turning wooden balls can be tricky, but with this trick we can get almost perfect wood balls.

    That's amazing! I did think it would all jam up suddenly at the start, but it worked a charm. Very innovative. That's what I love about your woodworking videos, they make my brain re-wire itself and accept new ways of looking at stuff.

      People say much the same when I take to wood spinning on my Lathe, with a 4 inch Makita angle grinder & tungsten tip rotary power chisel (Arbortec wood carver pro).
      It works so well I’m going to make a dedicated copy Lathe with the angle grinder and wood carver out of my 2nd Lathe & keep it for repetitive baluster type work, where it’s mounted on a cross slide that follows the desired shape template. I’m of half a mind to use CNC & stepper motors to automate it!

    Maybe if your rounded the wood first it might run smoother, less drag on the outside of the hole saw. Or, when you get close, use a parting tool or SHARP chisel to open the outside gap a bit.

    A novel idea. Fastening the square blank via a screwed on face plate would eliminate the slippage. However, there is a lot of torque on the ball at the end and you need a really HEAVY drill to spin it. Going to try this on some fence posts I have to make

    Believe it or not, this is same idea we used to machine steel balls for ball valves. On horizontal boring machine. Steel on rotary table at angle. Single point cutter at pre-determined diameter. Ball fashioned by revolving table. Very accurate with fine finish.

    I've did it to make some of those pinterest pencil ball rings, the setup is a bit tedious but work like charm when is needed to batch more than one or two! The only problem is the red color left on the piece, i've solved it stripping the paint entirely from the holesaw.

    sdos.!

    The weight of the hole saw and drill pressing down put pressure causing the waste wood to nip against the hole saw outer edge that's why it buckled and came of. Very good idea you could make loads of even shaped balls for rail posts and things.

  • @antonmarkov2893
    @antonmarkov2893 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    the cutting tool has to turn way faster than the ball itself otherwise you get a point where the direction of cutting and direction of spinning is the same and that is why it might be rough.

    • @smoj304
      @smoj304 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like 'retreating blade stall' in a helicopter. At a certain speed, the rotor blade rotating backwards relative to the direction of flight is effectively at zero airspeed, no longer generating lift on that side, and the chopper falls out of the sky.
      Good pickup @Anton Markov. You could have a point there.

  • @carzg6949
    @carzg6949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent Idea, think I'm gonna give that a go but maybe wear a full protective mask :) Also, after you have finished roughing the ball, you could try replacing the rough hole cutter with a diamond hole cutter and finish it off with that. I think the end result would be far smother and still be a perfect ball.
